  • Traditional brass instruments overhauled and re-lacquered are beautiful and fun to do. Scratch brushed finishes have gained popularity in recent years. Here are two that recently passed thru my hands. Custom brace work shown here on the Bach 42.
Please note that I cannot take these jobs in from Mid may until about Mid October. Shop volume with playing condition school work is so high. Contact me to book a slot or simple check with me in the Fall. Jan. thru Mid-May is the best time to do this.

That's a really nice finish. Good work. What do you use to make that finish?

Mostly Scotch bright pads. The Maroon color works well. I also use a wire wheel on the crooks then go over it with a scotch brite pad.

What lacquer do you use to maintain the satin scratch brush finish?

How much would something like this cost if I wanted you to do it to one of my trombones?

What would this look like on a silver horn??

    • @jimflys2

It would be very similar to a vintage horn with the sand blasted and then silver plated look from back in the 20s and 30s - Although that was still done for a while and it is still done when restoring those older horns. There would be the risk of burning thru the silver plating while processing it with scratch brushing after it is already plated. So that is a very unorthodox way to do it. The old sand or glass bead blasted finishes were nice.
