    Here's Chefboyardee's website for the Throwback recipes:
    www.chefboyard...
    Chef Boyardee recently introduced "Throwback Recipe" versions of Beef Ravioli, Beefaroni and Lasagna. They promise "More Meat, More Cheese and More Goodness"! I decided to try out the Beefaroni (my favorite Chef Boyardee variety) and compare it to the current recipe that you usually find in the stores. It was quite interesting and--Spoiler Alert--the Throwback one is a LOT better than the regular one!

    Throwback Recipe should just replace the Current Recipe all together.

      I wouldn't argue with that. I think they might end up with a problem producing it on a regular basis due to the trans fats and the more "complicated" process that must be needed to make it. The recipe must have been streamlined over the years to make it as cheap, simple and quick to produce as possible. I wish they'd at least take some of the good things from the Throwback and apply them to the new recipe (especially the spices and the Romano cheese!).

    I add some extra tomato sauce to current Beefaroni. Throwback recipe is what I get when I add more sauce to regular version. I ate canned foods growing up...my parents cooked traditional meals in my Chinese-Filipino home. Sometimes, I ate burgers, pizza, deli sandwiches, hotdogs & good Chef Boyardee canned stuff too back in NJ✌🏼🍲🍝

      I was a bit surprised by just how much better the Throwback actually was. And it kind of took a little time to really appreciate it too--which is why there's the little part at the end. I actually finished up the review kind of saying that there was a slight difference, but nothing major. Then after turning the camera off I had a little more and realized it REALLY was more different than I originally thought. While I don't eat this stuff regularly, if I DO pick up some more Chef Boyardee, when I do I'll definitely get the Throwback if it's still around!

      I've tested the beef ravioli, the beefaroni and the lasagna. All three Throwbacks beat their current versions. I also liked the ravioli. Compared to the throwbacks, the regular/current recipes lack flavor and complexity. You do have to wonder why they thought a lousier recipe would be a step up.

    I want to salute Conagra for giving the consumer a choice. Usually, these companies just keep foisting crappier and crappier ingredients on customers to keep the price down. With this, you can pay more and get better; or pay less and get lesser. Your choice. I know I prefer to spend a couple of quarters more and get the good stuff.

    • @gschultz9
      @gschultz9  4 года назад

    And doctors wonder why cancer and other terrible health issues is on the rise. Look at the garbage we eat nowadays. When you did this, it shows the difference in what we eat nowadays, to what we used to eat. We used to eat real food, like you said the throwback looked more like real natural food. The current recipe is to artificial, and way more processed. I think the throwback recipe should completely replace the current recipe, even if they have to charge a little more, most people would pay for it if the product is genuinely better, and less processed.

    i tried the ravioli .. price difference for me was a dime ($1.09 todays $1.19 throwback) and was excited, to get back to the days of when Ettore and Ettore Boiardi owned the company. as a child i LOVED the ravioli.. so when i tried the throwback it was very disappointing .. it tasted like nothing i remember, it was horrible. i too did a side by side and although i don't eat Chef Boyardee today all that much, due to the high fructose corn syrup level in it, the throwback one of course just said 'sugar' .. but the taste was horrible. i gave my other cans away to food charities..throwback recipes.. how far are they throwing back i wonder because these were not the tastes of my childhood...

      That's very interesting. I wonder exactly WHEN they are throwing back to as well. For timing sake I edited out a part where I mentioned that I wasn't sure if this recipe would appeal to my nostalgia taste buds because I didn't know if it was a throwback to the time of my youth--or earlier or later. They don't seem to mention anywhere if this is the ORIGINAL recipe, or if it isn't, when the recipe is from. Wither way this definitely tasted a lot better to me than the current recipe--whether it was "my" childhood recipe or not. I may have to try out the Ravioli and the Lasagna at some point.

I certainly wouldn't recommend it to anyone who doesn't eat canned pasta-type stuff in general, but for anyone who does (or did as a kid) eat it, even just once in a while, it's an interesting thing to compare. You know it is funny with Chefboyardee everyone has a different favorite flavor. Mine is the Ravioli I always thought that the beefaroni tasted and smelled to me like wagon wheel dog food (Don't ask how I know how it tastes LOL) Oh and BTW the title says you are reviewing the Ravioli instead of the beefaroni. I find the current recipes are so runny and it seems to have more sugar in it, they are too sweet. Yeah but the throwback recipe has the trans fats because it has real meat in it. Thanks for the great review and comparison.

    • @gschultz9
      @gschultz9  5 лет назад

      Thanks for the tip on the title. I have no idea how I managed to do that, since the ONLY think I dealt with for this video was the Beefaroni! There's always something that slips by unnoticed. At least it was easy to change. It IS interesting about people's different taste preferences. It would SEEM like they're all pretty much the same thing, just in different shapes and combinations of pasta, meat, sauce and cheese. But I guess you can see why they continue to produce multiple varieties instead of just one. There will always be people who prefer one over the others!

    Yup. "New and Unimproved!" I note that the sodium and potassium levels switched, likely due to changing nitrate/nitrite compounds from old to new. Both are horribly high if you eat the whole can, of course. (And you ate two!) The Chef is meant to appeal to five-year-olds, which is part of the portion sizing, but they also do that to fool us into thinking their foods aren't so terribly unhealthy. They aren't fooling us.

    The sheer amount of canned food products available in the US boggles the mind. In my country we have SPAM, two or three types of beans, and vienna sausages. Nothing else. Nowhere. Not a single company bothers to make or sell anything canned here. I've traveled up and down the country, from 100K towns to 10M metropolises, not a single supermarket bothers with those. Also we only have like 4 flavours of soda. I don't know if this is a good or a bad thing, I tend to think it's bad because our people just don't demand any variety and thus immense monopolies eat up the entire market...

    People other than my wife can eat this stuff hot? I can't stand it any other way but right out of the can cold.

      I've never been one to eat it cold out of the can, but have a friend who does that. I should try it some time!

    yeah I've noticed a difference in the throwback stuff and it is more expensive they've done it with mountain dew and they've done it with Pepsi all because they had put the original sugar back in. it should they all the same price I can't see any reason why not.

      high fructose corn syrup saves tons of $$$$ over real sugar.. it's the bottom line, make the best product for the least amount of money

    Great video! I haven’t even seen the throwback on the shelves. I’ll look for it. Did you notice any difference with the 2 cheeses??

    • @gschultz9
      @gschultz9  5 лет назад

      There was definitely a difference in taste. I'm not exactly sure what caused the difference, but I'm guessing that a lot of it had to do with the different cheeses!

    I don’t know what state you live but where I am in Tennessee it’s $1.99 and with tax it’s $2.17. Lucky.

    • @gschultz9
      @gschultz9  5 лет назад

      Wow, that IS expensive. I've seen other videos where people say they are getting it for .99. Not sure where they're from. Strange how much it fluxuates from state to state. I believe they sell it online at Target (regular recipe) for 99 cents. Who knows how much tax and shipping charges would add to it, but at least it's there!

    I remember the change. I used to love chef Bogarde ravioli. And then suddenly we bought the new red can and it was so gross and flavourless

    • @gschultz9
      @gschultz9  5 лет назад

      I think the change must have happened at a time when I wasn't really eating the stuff anymore (kind of like a period between childhood and a point in adulthood when I got nostalgic for stuff from my childhood). By the time I tried it out as an adult the taste didn't really live up to my memory. I always figured it was because my tastes had changed or my childhood memory was faulty, but it turns out that it really DIDN'T taste the same because they changed the recipe for the worse!

      They are the same product basically, just a little different. Not like two completely different dishes or anything like that. That's why it was interesting to se what was the same and what was different between the two.

    It'd be interesting to see what your kids and wife think if you gave them a blind taste test. Especially your kids since they probably haven't had the original version.

    • @gschultz9
      @gschultz9  5 лет назад

      It would be interesting. Unfortunately the wife definitely wouldn't be interested and the kids haven't actually had much of this kind of stuff in their lives, so wouldn't really have anything to compare it too. How lucky (and unlucky at the same time) they are! I know this stuff isn't "good" for you, but I definitely remember eating it as kind of a "special" thing as a kid--definitely not a regular meal kind of a thing. But since they don't have a lot of experience with Chef Boyardee it WOULD be interesting to see which one the kids prefer!

    Why a fork?

    • @gschultz9
      @gschultz9  5 лет назад

      You didn't hear the explanation in the video? It was to get a good idea of how thick (or thin for that matter) the sauce was. A spoon would probably show the sauce better, but if there was a difference of thickness between the two I figured the fork would show it better.

      I don't really know. Last time I talked to him was quite a while ago. I know he was very busy with family, work and life and that kind of had to come first before the videos. At the time I believe all was well with him, but not sure what's happened since then. The longer it takes the less likely it seems, but I'm hoping we'll hear from him again soon!
