Roger Taylor is one of the most iconic drummers of the last century and his band Queen has to be mentioned when you're talking about the most successful rock bands ever. With numerous world wide hits throughout the 1970's and 1980's their importance for the international music scene can not be overemphasized.

Note : Roger played almost exactly the same configuration during 2008 'Cosmos Rocks' tour(minus the gong at the back), so I think this is a very accurate recreation. I LOVE IT! :)
I think the just have the gong sitting there in case they ever need to use it, it’s in most of the videos.

But not on snare sounds .. live is something huge, powerfull. BTW, as Queen is known as a great great live band, i always remember live sounds instead of the albums.
@@YeahNego he also tuned his snare many times a show, it was common for him to change the tuning of his snare between songs.

I never realized that until now! He's slightly opening the hi-hat for every snare hit! Of course I heard it, but it never hit me!
YES!! That is one of his unique techniques I love and tend to copy it when I’m playing. I’m glad others notice that little detail of his playing.
I'm in love with this sound, It's a part of iconic Queen sound, adds weight. I really love it on "Save Me" and "Play the Game"
My FAVORITE song by Queen to this day is "Dragon Attack" and it is criminally underrated. The drum solo alone in that makes me smile, but EVERYONE gets a solo in that one. Lol. Why don't more people play it?! Anyway thanks for posting. This was a great video.

One technique I like that comes from Roger is that, while hitting it and keeping it on beat, he slowly opens his hi hat and then on the snare hit, he closes it at the same time.
Yes! Very unique, and you have to practice it! At least I did… But I‘ve also seen Alex Van Halen do it.
99% of drummers miss this when doing Queen and it makes such a big difference! It’s the same with the way Brian May rests his hand on the bridge to ever so slightly mute the strings, another subtle but integral part to the overall Queen sound.
How Queen tribute band drummers completely miss Roger's trademarks, lke the one you mention here, is criminal imo. Its an integral part of the overall playing of Queen songs. Miss them and they just become a pub band playing Queen, not a tribute imo.
I remember seeing Queen in mid '76 at the Santa Monica Civic, Roger's drum sound was over the top loud! Made me happy that I've been a Ludwig drumer since 1965, the PDP's sound very good as well. Nice work.
Roger always used 15 inch new beats hi hats the only way to get his older sound is with Ludwig drums with big Tom’s IMO

It is hard to get that "one specific" Roger Taylor Drumsound, as Queen really pushed the limits of production technology in the 70s and 80s and did experiment a lot.

Rogers most natural drum sound you'll find on 'The Game and 'The Works'. But i love how the rack toms sound on 'sheers heart attack'. His best snare sound i think is probably 'Innuendo' all imo.

@@johnsoos6907 you hear Roger's feel particularly on 'The Game' i think. You get it on other albums of course, but there's something about how his kit is recorded on 'The Game'/'The Works' that isn't there on other albums i think. The sound of his kit on 'Jazz' i think is poor. I think Roger was let down on that album.
@@luizansounds i'm not a fan of 'the miracle' drum sound to be honest. I really want them to remix the title track, taking out all the keyboards/synths and replacing them with just piano, and then re-record the drum track so the kit sounds more authentic like the drums on 'the game' for example. I think the drums on 'the miracle' at times sound part aunthentic drum kit and part processed or triggered samples over the top so a blend of programmed and authentic/actually played. For trying to sound modern at the time, i think they created an album that now sounds more dated than 'the works'. But thats me lol!
@@MrWaynePage Mack produced both of those albums. He gets great drum sounds. If you listen to Mick Tucker's sound on Sweet's "Give Us A Wink", or the drum sound on Billy Squire's "Don't Say No" there is a common thread. Roy Thomas Baker did "Jazz". One thing I can tell you about how they recorded drums on "The Game" is; they recorded without crash cymbals, on some of the tracks. Same with drum fills. They added them, afterwards. You can find some of these raw tracks on RUclips.

Exactly. He varies it too. On' Sail Away Sweet Sister', it is very sloshy. You can clearly hear him accenting the 2 and 4. It is a very unique style and is totally RT. I love when he also mixes 6th and 16th notes on the hi-hat. Roger has a great solid feel!
One of my favorite Roger Taylor drum sounds is on A Day At The Races. Specifically, his tom sound on the track "White Man".

I'm with ya. The toms sound quite flat on 'white man' i think (very tribal), but the drums on this track definitly influenced Lars Ulrich of Metallica imo.

Nice video. I am a massive fan of Roger Taylor. For me, Queen 2, Sheer Heart Attack, A NIght at the Opera and A Day at the Races have some of the best drum sounds ever in rock. A fat natural sound. Roger tuned his toms very melodically to a pure note, with the reso heads a minor 3rd higher than the batter to get maximum resonance. His style and sound is iconic. He is totally unique!
The snare isn't loud enough for me on 'Queen 2', but it is my favourite album of all time still.I think the drum sound on SHA is far better than ANATO, far more natural sounding and better balanced. The drum kit on ADATR is too complicated imo, but has some of his best momets for sure. Defo unique
This drum set up is so cool, bet you felt one with this sitting behind the kit. It’s amazing how different set ups give us different inspirations on how to approach our beautiful instrument. I think it’s a good thing to explore these different configurations. Good video as always bro 🤘

I’ve always liked his sound from their Jazz album. ‘Fat Bottomed Girls’ is a great example esp as it has that epic fill just before that last chorus, including his timbales.

The Jazz album IS together with the debut album the album with the worst production. The drums sound unnatural, the guitars shrill and the vocals are swamped in the mix. Some songs switch from stereo to mono. I only noticed how horrible the album sounds when I listened to NOTW and than immediately listened to Jazz. It's a shame because I found the album pretty good myself

This is the guy who got me into drums 30 years ago. Very glad you covered him and covered him and the engineers behind so well, a big well done. You did ask "what did you think", I think 99% its there - Roger's snare is a tiny bit tighter I hear, or uses less rim. But overall, I am not sure if Roger could have created Roger's Sound this good. Well done Sirs!

This is brilliant.. Roger is my favourite drummer and I love the sound of those toms. I remember and interview with Brian May where he said Roger hated muffling his drums and much preferred that big open sound.

For what It's worth.
I have been digging Queen for 48 years. The most important and distinctive part of Taylor's sound is never addressed in this video.
His timing. He lays back. Plays slightly behind the beat.
Bohemian Rhapsody had piano first! The drums (and everything else) added later.
He is playing to Fred's piano track. He skillfully lays his Tempo back.
Taylor/Queen had their very own Tempo. Often it would float around. That sounds like something a bad band (or drummer) would do. But it was incredible when Queen 'floated' the Tempo around.
I enjoy the early albums, and I think Queen ll is the masterpiece of all thier work.
To sound like Roger, study and practice his unique sense of Tempo. It will serve better than matching his drum sound.....but the sound will make it even better!

Pretty close!My favourite Video so far. For me Roger wasn't a heavy hitter. He played with a lighter touch butexactly that makes his sound so big. Very inspiring!!
Queen is my iconic band by the voice of Freddy, guitar of Brian and bass of John, as I play the 3. Now I never felt big drum sound in Queen, as I could for Police or Genesis. But Roger does the job as any of their master piece is well sustained by drums, where I surely miss something.
Roger's drums sound was so precise and strong.. And I'm not saying heavy. Listen to My Melancholy Blues live, you'll see how subtle it was, although powerful. Take a look at what he did in Bring Back That Leroy Brown, the difference between songs like that and classic ones like Radio Gaga and I Want It All.. Extremely versatile, just like Freddie on the vocals. Queen was the most versatile band ever, and John, Roger, and Brian were "Freddie Mercuries" of their own instruments for sure..
@@hmwr0h John, Roger and Brian were all masterclasses at their instruments. Brian knew how to whip up a storm in his solos, Roger's filling ability is second to none and John is not only able to play parts he never played live (eg. Dragon Attack bass solo), but he was also able to improvise almost flawlessly. Granted, all of them had off-moments, especially as the years have gone on, but they are still great.

My favourite track for the drum sound has to be Fat Bottomed Girls. There are plenty of greats to choose from though, including Your My Best Friend and Killer Queen to name a couple more. Great work again Pascal! 👍

As one of the people who requested for this, TYSM! 🤩 One of the proofs why every member of Queen has each own unique sound!
Aside from the current kit AOD has (they added a cowbell in ruclips.net/video/tA1EQJbnNLI/видео.htmlm32s), recreators can also add 2 timbales or 2 rototoms above the floor toms, 1 splash cymbal beside the concert tom and 3-4 electronic drum pads above the timbales/rototoms.
Toms, Bass and Cymbals are all spot on! The only thing that was off was the snare. Early Roger beats were noticeably really beafy on the snare, almost like an explosion from the bottom of a 20 feet hole. It was a very unique snare tone that I've struggled for years to match.
I would love to see a video about the drum sound of Nigel Olson (Elton John's drummer), specifically, the sound from the early 70s

Roger Taylor is my favorite Drummer together with Cozy Powell. This one was similar to sound, not perfect but its still good to see and interesting to know. You guys also should've mentioned what a great singer Roger is for being the Drummer. 7:26 he did actually use Zildjian New Beats most of the time. Love the video editing in this too. My favorite Drum sounds from Roger are ''Live at the Rainbow'' and his Drum sound live at Wembley 1986 but most importantly his Drum sound when they performed Now i'm Here live at Wembley 1986, my most favorite Drum sound from Roger, he doesn't leave anything out of his kit when playing that song.
I think its interesting how the 'wembley 86' drum sound (and band sound for that matter) is so different on 'Budapest 86' and 'knebworth 86'. If you listen to the Mannheim 86 gig (broadcast on the radio), the drums sound different again and have a sticky sound to them i think, but you really hear how Roger combined the bass drum with the snare in a lot of songs (if you've not heard this have a listen to a live 86 version of 'One Vision' and the section that goes 'one man, one soul, one true religion etc' you can hear the combination of snare and bass drumn together in the beat. He continued to play drums like this until the tribute gig i think, but he didn't play the kit like this before 86. He also switched from Ludwig to Yamaha for the 86 tour.).
@@MrWaynePage Wembley, Budapest and Knebworth aren't that different from each other Drum sound wise. I think its mostly recording and sound quality that has to do with this. With Mannheim I think its either the mics or the recording, because behind all that stickiness not only is he definitely using the same Yamaha 9000 kit but in-person the kit probably almost sounds the same as in the other shows. And also I feel like the kick is a tiny bit lower tuned at Mannheim. Yes you can really hear that snare and kick in Mannheim. the kick in Mannheim is really punchy but same for Wembley day 1, compared to the second day the kick is more punchy on the first day. Also I don't really know what you are trying to say with the Kick and Snare being played together thing, is it something you really love hearing or what made you mention it, im curious. Roger did play the kick and snare together at the same time often for example on Brighton rock or Under Pressure. But if you specifically mean that beat he played on One Vision the part you mentioned, he played that beat for Another One Bites the Dust both in studio and live. It's the first thing that came up in my mind. He also played that beat on the studio version of One Vision. He played it on the studio version of A Kind of Magic as well, live he doesn't really play it, in Budapest he played it for a little but not in Wembley that I could hear. So basically Roger did play like that before. Roger also used different gear in the 86 tour, in Wembley Roger used a 14x6.5 snare and a 20" Ride but in Budapest a 14x8 snare and a 22" ride and some different crashes too, who knows what he could've been using in Mannheim or Knebworth, its probably in the book where 90% of Rogers kits and gear are listed. After this tour Roger went back to Ludwig and then later in the 2000s somewhere for some reason like every OG Drummer went to DW (do you maybe know whats up with that?). Also very random, I heard one time that Roger wasn't a fan of the Yamaha sound and thats why he went back to Ludwig, I don't know where I heard or read it and I couldn't find anything about that again so I think its not true, i do wonder what Rogers opinion on his 86 tour kit is tho.
@@ben1ben i've heard Roger changed to Yamaha in 86' for the punchy sounding bass drum. Its interesting that he changed because that year he produced an album, recorded at Mountain Studios, for a band called Magnum (Birmingham band , my home city and i was a big fan of in the 90's). And there drummer, Mickey Barker, was endorsed by Yamaha. So i do wonder if he was impressed with what he heard of Mickey, and just fancied a change in drum brand because of it. I think i mentioned the bass drum/snare combination thing because i think its quite an interesting thing he bought into his playing. Yeah, i'm aware of the other tracks. But i think it defines his sound and approach to playing that year. Gone are the electric drums of 82-85, and he incorporated yet another shift in his playing. Interesting what you say about him changing snare drums on tour in 86'. I was aware of him changing cymbals according to venues, but not his snare. Interesting point.
@@MrWaynePage Oh thats interesting, it might really be that Roger changed to Yamaha because of that, I never knew that, it sounds the most logical. I think Freddie and Roger truly have the most ''evolutions'' in Queen you could say, just like a Pokemon. Freddie looked and sang differently like you can tell the year just by his looks and/or his singing. And with Roger too, he had specific Drum sounds each year, his playing and approach changed and his outfit was different too. It was so specific for periods of times. So yeah I get what you mean his playing and approach was different for the magic tour. The kit Roger used is pretty Modern, like he used Clear batter heads and I think he only used coated or smooth white ones up until that point. And he got rid of the rototoms and most of the electrics, I didn't look at any other shows but at Wembley Roger had a Roland e pad thing so he still did have some electric sound stuff there. Also as far as I know Roger used 14" Rock Hi hats in Wembley even though he always used 15" New Beats. You could say he had a Metal kit basically. Funnily Cozy Powell around the middle 80's started to use the same kit, he was endorsed by yamaha anyways since the 70s but he didnt use Black Yamaha 9000s and neither had he ever used clear batter heads (same heads as Roger had in the 86 tour). Roger and Cozy basically almost had the same sound which is funny to me because they are both my favorite drummers. Cozy's Drums were just so much bigger but since its the same model you can really notice the similarities. Since then Cozy kept his setup like that, You can see Cozy's best Yamaha 9000 setup and sound in his show with Brian at the Brixton Academy, thats a great show they did. I really like how Cozy played Queen songs so differently than Roger, Cozy has his own unique style, only thing I always laugh at tho is how Cozy's style doesn't fit Now I'm Here at alll, thats probably the worst one he had covered from Roger. But Cozy did absolutely amazing at Hammer to Fall and Tie Your Mother Down for example. Always interesting to me how everyone has their own style.
@@ben1ben never knew Roger had essentially a 'metal' kit in 86'. I'm very surprised as i'd never say Roger was a 'metal' drummer. As Mickey Barker was endorsed by Yamaha as well, it wouldn't surprise me if all 3 (rog, cozy, mickey) played the same kit then. And yeah, interesting hearing Cozy's takes on Queen songs. Like yourself i like some and not others. Don't know if you've heard Cozy's take on 'teo torriate', but it sounds awkward to me. But then if Roger took on playing 'stargazer' i'm not sure it'd sound right. Two very different drummers for sure. I regard TYMD as a song that highlights Rogers ability to play a old 1950's rock and roll shuffle beat in a way like no other. As he does in 'crazy little thing' and 'sleeping on the sidewalk' as well. I think Roger is particularly good at this beat. Not sure if Cozy was? Maybe he just preferred a more 'metal' drum approach that was more modern at the time? Going back on my drum sound comparison of wembley 86, i think a good example of the difference in drum sound i mention would be the drum solo ending to TYMD at Wembley to knebworth. I think the toms sound quite flat at Wembley, where as there seems to be a bounch to the sound of them at Knebworth/Budapest. Maybe the venues themselves (the acoustics) varied the way the kit was picked up by the mics? As you say, by ear next to the kit they'd sound the same, but how they cam across during the gigs could of been due to the venue, maybe? Rogers playing would obvs be the same technique wise.

One of Roger’s techniques that you are missing is his use of dead stroke rim shots on the snare. The majority of Roger’s snare hits in Queen’s rockier or up tempo songs were played like this, including the up tempo section of Bohemian Rhapsody and the whole of Don’t Stop Me Now. The technique is quite straightforward. You rim shot the snare and leave the tip of the stick resting against the drum head. If you watch the Roger Taylor drum cam footage of the Wembley 1986 concert you will see Roger use this technique throughout One Vision, for example.
