The VC10 was THE MOST beautiful plane ever built!

Happy childhood memories of Britain and TV in late 60s/early 70s. I was about 4 years old when first saw this wonderful film of a beautiful aircraft. Now here I am in my forties marvelling at it's beauty. Ok there's a few continuiity errors on landing sequences but who cares? Lovely film, and some wonderful memories.

One of my favourites as a very young child watching the trade test transmissions on BBC2 in the late 1960's and early 1970's. Dad build me a 1-144 scale Airfix model of a BOAC VC-10 when I was around 4, though it very soon ended up as a diorama of the one at Dawson's field!!! Got to fly in one three times, twice to fly out to the Gulf and back in 2002/2003 and on a jorry ride on a tanker sortie in 2004 while in the RAF.

My favourite film to watch when a trainee tv engineer in the 70`s..loved the sunset and the music..happy days..times have to change...now we read what ELSE was going on at the time..but these were great trade films..plus some great music on school programme intros..found a few of here but Bart was always a favourite,,long version..turned out to be..was it John Foggerty, also found the slower jazzy clock one too..fluke. Didnt remember it being the one with the clock countdown..yes tv was so different then..eventually 5 channels, the fifth being right next to most video rf outs..depending in area often couldnt get it clear.. the new tower in London caused wide spread ghosting in the north east area of Enfield..Brimsdown especially..what was the tower..it all gradually comes back..theres a book there somewhere but would it sell.

I too used to watch this film in 1969 after returning from two years in Australia. I was unemployed at the time and looked forward every day to escape in this 'Flight of Fancy' where I would relive that wonderful in-flight service from BOAC. Yes, great music, wonderful photography and what was a romantic time in travel and passenger service. The 747 changed everything forever but long live the memory of the VC10 and those now faded memories of another world, now sadly gone.

I do believe I'm in possession of the master VHS tape of this version of "A Flight of Fancy," since I purchased it directly from ART Film & Video in Perivale, in 1993!

From the days when air travel was romantic and exciting. Like another poster says, the 747 changed all that, jamming people in like cattle.
As for the music, I'm sure it's part of one of the major music libraries, my guess De Wolfe. I'll have to dig deeper and find out!

There is footage here that was used in the Doctor Who story: The Faceless Ones of which is a partially missing story (4/6 episodes lost)

The VC10 was a beautiful aircraft. Typical euro design, even now airbus are knocking out some stunning designs.

Totally agree Steve- who it is by and where it comes from- perhaps that's lost in the mists of time?!

Possibly Shannon in Ireland. A lot of BOAC VC10 training was done there.

The VC10 was manufactured at the Boeing plant at Brooklands Race Track in Surrey. Test flights were flown from there to another airfield, also in Surrey, a few miles away (don't know it's name). This was filmed as the aircraft took off from that "other" airfield.
