  • Beware of Uber Driver Scams in the Dominican Republic!
While Uber has revolutionized the way people travel, providing convenience and accessibility, unfortunately, like any large platform, it has also been a target for various scams. Here are some common scams associated with Uber:
Fake Drivers: Scammers pose as Uber drivers, either by obtaining a fake Uber decal or simply waiting near popular pickup spots. They may approach individuals waiting for their ride and claim to be their driver. This can lead to passengers inadvertently getting into the wrong vehicle, risking their safety and security.
Phishing Emails/Texts: Users may receive phishing emails or text messages claiming to be from Uber, asking for personal information such as login credentials, credit card details, or other sensitive data. These messages often contain links to fake websites designed to steal information.
Surge Pricing Manipulation: Some drivers have been known to manipulate surge pricing by colluding with others to artificially increase demand in certain areas. This can result in passengers paying significantly higher fares than they should during peak times.
Cancellation Fee Scams: Drivers may falsely claim that passengers canceled rides to collect cancellation fees. This can occur when a driver arrives at the pickup location but decides not to complete the trip, then marks it as canceled. Passengers are charged a fee despite not canceling the ride themselves.
Vomit Fraud: This scam involves drivers falsely claiming that passengers have vomited in their vehicle in order to collect cleaning fees. Some unscrupulous drivers may provide fabricated evidence, such as photos of vomit or damaged upholstery, to support their claim.
Account Hacking: Hackers may gain unauthorized access to Uber accounts and use them to book rides or make purchases without the account owner's consent. This can result in financial losses for the victim and potential misuse of personal information.
Unsolicited Ride Requests: In some cases, individuals may receive unexpected ride requests through the Uber app from unknown sources. This could be an attempt to lure unsuspecting users into providing personal information or falling victim to a scam.
To avoid falling victim to these scams, it's important for both passengers and drivers to remain vigilant, verify the identity of their driver or passenger, use strong and unique passwords for their accounts, and report any suspicious activity to Uber immediately. Additionally, users should be cautious when sharing personal information and avoid clicking on links or responding to unsolicited messages claiming to be from Uber.

I arrived in Las Americas at 3 am. I was tired and I wanted to go home. The taxi driver at the airport wanted me to pay $50 just for a 30 minutes ride to Santo Domingo. The same distance from my house in Miami to the airport, I only pay $17. 🤦🏽‍♂️ what I did, I just waited at the airport until day light and I call a friend to pick me up. 😅

Long term resident here. I've found that UBER between two locations in the city of SD works pretty well. It's the long trips they want more money for because the possibility of finding a return fare is very low. Very understandable reason. What most residents do is to find a trustworthy driver and get their number.

Yes, I was in Barranquilla, Cali and a bunch of other Colombia Departments. Colombia is wonderful. I also travel to Santo Domingo a lot. Colombian law only allows me to stay in Colombia for a maximum of 180 days on a tourist visa. I have not problem with that, since I have options. The only problem is that flights are more expensive these days.

About to go there in a week or so. So if I order an Uber and the driver tries to negotiate a price outside of the app, no matter what, say no cancel and send a complaint to get money back? i was told by some other expats and also local dominicans that this is kind of normal sometimes, but my gut was telling me no.

Always fight it, we must expose this behavior. It is wrong, and we will teach them not to do this. Do not let anyone tell you that because many drivers do it, it is ok to do. Report this to Uber, if Uber does not listen, fight it with your Credit card company. Stay strong and never give in to scams.

If it is at an airport you need to be picked up, do it. Taxis and Ubers charge you a kidney if they see you are coming or going to the airport. Of course, you should never comply with their demands to pay outside of what the app says.
