And how do you vlog, especially in 2022-2023, now the storytelling format of youtube has changed quite a lot. So, I did the challenge and started my own vlog. But that didn't go entirely smooth...

Where did you come from? I'm really happy youtube recommended your channel. It's a breath of fresh air in the crowded space of creator tips/tricks/help. I would love a breakdown on how you and others make it appear seamless to start a conversation point, delivering important information, then switching to a new location or view and the conversation picks up exactly where it should with no interruption. It speaks to the point about content flow and introducing variety without breaking a viewers concentration. It works soooo well but is so hard to pull off.

Feel you, I don't like to film myself in that angle either. Especially the paralyze part.
Practice. makes. perfect. As awkward as it felt that day filming, as good I feel about it now. I'm super glad I pushed through, because it got me to publish my idea instead of mulling over what could have been 😅 So that's the advice I can give after. It feels like a bit of a switch to make :)

there is something really fun about vlogging, it can be very simple and rewarding - but there is also a very fine line where it turns from an easy linear story to an excruciating mess that is really hard to fill with (any actual) substance
I think you hit the nail on the head Wojtek! It's exactly what we talked about in the latest video. But I think there is a beauty in finding your story in the edit that is not linear. It forces you to become better at storytelling with every vlog you put out. Learned so much from this one on itself... It just took way to long haha 😅

Great topic. I failed as a RUclipsr because I was good at theory, not practice. It's what kills most RUclipsrs. They can’t “do.” Vlogging is great because it’s the simplest form of doing. It should be the default position for every RUclipsr. Start your channel with vlogs and add them to your content regularly to avoid burnout.
Most people think vlogging is telling a story with a plot and characters, like they do in Hollywood movies. Wrong, you’re over-thinking. Vlogging is just documenting your thoughts and feelings. Sharing what you know.
Casey Neistat is not good at vlogging because of his filmmaking skills. He’s good at conversation, verbal articulation, improv, comedy, charm, charisma, energy, curiosity, positivity. These qualities are what drive his technical filmmaking skills. Sharing thoughts & feelings with real passion and authenticity is relatable to people. More relatable than plots and slow motion B-roll.
Vlogging is attractive to the audiences because it represents a relationship. You’re showing up regularly and people love that. You can’t count on anyone in real life. Everyone is a flake in real life. But a good daily vlog is something you can actually count on. Even a weekly vlog is more reliable than most relationships in real life.
RUclips is an actors platform, not a filmmakers platform. Casey is naturally entertaining. Most people would benefit from becoming more interesting as a human being in real life. Practice your people skills in the analog world. Then, after you blow up in real life, blow up on RUclips.
It’s not easy to become a popular person in real life, but you would grow faster on RUclips if you did. And you’d never burn out.

I would personally love to see more vlogs on this channel.. pretty much anything you create with the 'Creator Secrets' umbrella is going to be something I click on every time. Vlogging is so hard.
I did several runs At daily vlogging and 60 days is as far as I got on the last attempt.
But what I learned from that was how to edit quickly, building hot keys and even how to shoot events. (Which is a big part of my job now)
But what I discovered was after a while I was editing it in my head as I was shooting it. That took soooo much practice and I know it’s something I can’t just pick up and do. It’s a very difficult skill and I only grazed the surface of it.
The only thing I can say is I fully agree haha 😅 60 days is mental Denton! Kudos 🙋🏻♂️
I think over time the structure of a vlog gets clearer and clearer. So you can just plug in an idea and vlog around that idea. But I truly understand why Casey said: I need to keep my knifes sharp... It's easy to get out of the rhythm and get into your head again... 😅

We can completely relate! Despite our efforts to be more vloggish, our videos have turned into more curated informational style videos. But this year we're gonna try Vlogmas, as an effort to get more raw style and be more vloggish. Loving the breakdown man! 🙌

Again, another great video. To answer your question, I would say you should do both. But keep in mind that Casey didn't just start to just do daily vlogs and was great at them. He did his vlogs over some time period and then when he felt that he was efficient in making his videos he then went on to do the daily vlogs. You can't judge yourself on this one video. Take the tips from Chris and make a few of these then ask if you are getting better or not. I think you are really good at this but probably need to fine-tune it some more and then you would have something great...maybe?

I at times go out to do a vlog-style video and like you said, as soon as the camera is on me I just go to jello in my mind at times. I also totally understand the idea that you have this plan and you got it all figured out and then you go out to execute and boom, your jello brain again. I have such great ideas in my videos but my execution is not so great at times. But I will say that many times the journey is so much more than the end result. I have faith in me and as well faith in you that you will as they say "hit the algorithm". Just remember us, the little guys, when you are Casey famous! you will get there, I feel it. Your stuff is so good. Really!

In my humble opinion I think the skills gained from learning to Vlog and becoming more comfortable with it will lead into your explainer videos being of an even higher quality.
Totally agree! It felt so awkward at first, but the talking points for the camera never have gotten out so well and smooth. Usually it takes me a good 3-5 takes, now most of them were onetakers! I guess the vlogging works as sort of warm up to get into flowstate 😄

If you can stick with vlogging it will teach you so much. How to be disciplined, how to develop your systems and processes. Dont view vlogging as an experiment, view it as a marathon that you are just getting into to, stretch your legs and get into it.

This video was mainly an experiment to see if I could... film and edit a vlog 😅 But now sitting down and reading all the comments makes me realise that the way it feels for me when creating is way different than what you guys see when viewing. It might take some time, and it definitely won't be a daily vlog, but it lowers the pressure of having a 100% perfect video every tile though! Great video as always! I'm experimenting the same on my side. I did my first kinda vlog video and it was super hard for me, an entire world. Then it got me thinking : maybe I could use a vlog style video to explain tech topics. It could be refreshing rather than always sitting at home... Let's see.

I think you should do vlogs, but not daily. Because I think you would be able to explore and get really good really fast at building a story (and sharing the things you learn while doing it, which is why I'm subscribed). That said, don't put the pressure on yourself for a meaningless metric like "daily". That doesn't feel like what you are going for. It's not your success metric. Casey used it to hone his storytelling capabilities. But he also had years of that behind him to begin with.
How can you create a context for yourself in which even failing at something encourages you to come back and do it again?

Love the explainer videos... But I also like these type of videos because you show the human side of doing something you're not comfortable with and that's where people can relate. If you keep doing a vlog style every so often then ppl can see you get better at it.

i quite liked this almost vlog explainer video its quite cool to see you try and make a video like Casey but at the same time has your own flare to it. Vloging as a hole might not be fro you but maybe explaining and testing and trying out the styles in the same video could be a good style.

Great weird vlog. Actually it had pace and it had this weird tension. Too fragile - all the time you thought something bad will happen. At the end nothing bad happened, and there was some relief. Nice one! Yeah - I mean explainers are a way to make money and build an audience. Anything niche/vertical is. Vlog is self-expression and maybe build some brand... slooooowly. So no conflict really.

I have some videos in mind talking about just that :) But to give my first thoughts already: What do you have to show. Is there a goal you're working towards that you can use as a common theme overarching your vlogs. I think the answer lays in finding that specific thing that makes you unique :)

Unless you are already "famous" and or have exceptional/specific circumstances (example: I like to watch long distance truck drivers), who would care to watch and follow a regular guy vlogging about his daily life when the bar is high nowadays in terms of storytelling, filming and editing?
Also: have to say not interested in Casey style and topics any longer, do prefer his brother Van.
You hit the nail on the head (as we say in Belgium haha). But I’m working on a last video in the vlog series that goes in depth on that! But yes, Van is such a gift… he might deserve his own breakdown ☺️ what do you love the most from his storytelling?
You're a frustrating guy to watch....
You have Casey on a pedestal. .. It's clear just like millions of us that we admire what he's achieved. But you need to remember, he was an accomplished and successful film maker years before making daily vlogs.
Firstly Casey has an interesting life. If you have a dull and boring life, there is no point trying to entertain people with it.
My advice, don't try and emulate him. You'll just look foolish. Be yourself, don't pretend to be someone you're not.
Viewers will just see that you are acting.
You are a great film maker and editor go make some short films and publish them. Forget about Casey Niestat.
I have only just started on RUclips this year, I have nearly 300 uploads. They are all terrible, I'm not here to impress others, I am here to log my life. That is what a vlog is. If your life is dull your vlog will be dull.
Little tip, Casey's videos are not all 3 act plays. But he starts every video with....

Go make some movies... Practice practice and practice.... 10,000 hours and you'll be a master... As the saying goes.
There are some really good points in here! Casey definitely isn't an overnight success, but he has really mastered this way of storytelling. The way I breakdown creator's work is by breaking down their cuts and reverse engineering the way they work from there. For Casey that means exploring the world of vlogs. But he's by far the only creator I'm putting on a pedestal ;) It's invigorating to learn something from a creator who's work you admire, by stepping into their shoes and trying out their style. That being said, you can find a breakdown of MKBHD and Matt D'Avella as well on the channel, who's styles are totally different! And I'm sorry my face is frustrating to watch, I have the same issue when the mirror looks back 🥹😄
