For a brief moment, it was 1979, my wife was still alive, we were driving down Valley Parkway in Escondido, the top was open on my '78 TransAm... Life was good. I miss her so. Thank you for bringing her back for that fleeting few seconds.
It's amazing the movement music can have, triggering memories...allowing an escape, thanks for the reminder...so sorry about your loss, must've been an incredible woman.
Thinking of what Escondido must’ve looked like back in those days! I was born way after, but I really wonder. Seeing all the old roads around the county, amazing. Pala-Temecula Road at 11 PM with this song.
I think that's unique to the Mark V I think the older ones have a little bit more softer and rounded tone this one is very tight and compressed sounding but still pretty it just depends on what your personal preference is I prefer some of the oldest ones for instance Billy Preston's work get back by the Beatles that was the Mark 1 and that era is what I prefer myself but this is hauntingly beautiful in its own way but check out some of his other videos he uses the older models you can decide for yourself I actually preferred the Wurlitzer piano over the roads because of the bark that the wurli has but then you play a Rhodes and it does different things and is much more ballad friendly so they both have their place in the Arsenal this is just great musicianship going on here so regardless about splitting hairs about the tone I just would sit back and appreciate his masterful playing it really helps to de-stress after working a nine-to-five BS job all day... peace out, Bob
Simply beautiful. I wish I could take everyone back to 1979 with me and share the road trip myself and my friends took from Buffalo NY to Virginia Beach at the end of summer. We had only 3 cassettes with us and E,W&F was one of them. What magic it was to hear their music while driving along on a warm summer night with the windows down. And thank goodness there are many recordings of similar music and a few players like Marcin Grochowina and his Rhodes Mark V, that are still around to remind us of how wonderful life was and can be again, if we appreciate it.

Upon hearing this 1979 song I reflect back to my childhood remembrance in Chicago Hyde Park when we lived modestly. And although I'm living much more well off than then, one cannot ever escape the memory of one's earlier life. The nostalgia is overwhelming. Money means nothing anymore as it can't bring the poignancy of the simple life.
Great to see the Rhodes getting its due in these comments! The 70s were all about the Rhodes, while the 80s and onward were all about digitally created Rhodes sounds. Harold Rhodes has a distinguished place in the pantheon of contemporary music. What a versatile and amazing instrument!
I'd say the Rhodes continued on well into the 80's, especially with artists like Whitney and MJ. Others, like Daryl Hall, went from the Wurlitzer electric to the CP70, to the Prophet 5, then into the Fairlight CMI.
@@MalikEmmanuel Millions of satisfied listeners and thousands of cases of Sciatica is the legacy of the original Rhodes. Newer EP's that create the sound (somewhat) are much lighter. But where is the love?

I don't know why but for 40 years every time I listen to this song a tear falls. She has the power to touch my soul. And when I hear a Rhodes playing it, I get excited like a child
I play the bass and the drums but the end all and favorite instrument of mine is the fender rhodes. Years ago when my keyboardist put his rhodes 88 in the shop for repairs, he borrowed a wurlitzer. The more he played the more annoyed the band became....especially me. Needless to say the wurlitzer didn't cut it. That magical sound just wasn't there. I have always said the rhodes is just a gorgeous, relaxing and soulful instrument to listen to. Just as this gentleman is playing solo...I could listen to the fender rhodes by itself and be completely happy!! This is just lovely. Peace an love. ✌ 🎶🎶🎶
The wurlitzer can be nice and funky but the Rhodes can be anything it needs to be. It's sharp enough to cut the hardest of frozen mustards yet smooth enough to kiss the ears of those listening.
That is such awesome writing. Particularly the enharmonic transition to the chorus that forces the D# into an Eb. I just want to point out that Jerome Kern did the same thing many years earlier in All the Things You Are transitioning from the bridge to the final A.
This is just a Rhodes. They separated from fender at the end of the 70's. Fender Rhodes are rarer, older and more expensive. It's still the same instrument though. It's kinda like the difference between champagne and sparkling wine, same thing, different name.
They say the Mark V is the best Rhodes. Unfortunately, it came out during a time when Rhodes' reputation had taken a hit from QC problems with newer Mark IIs, and also when synthesizers were the 'in sound'. Personally I think that Fender should never have sold Rhodes to Roland, and had brought Harold back into the fold. The Rhodes never completely went away, and seems to be making a comeback as of late (which is awesome). Of course, these decisions were made during a tumultuous time at Fender, just after being spun back off from CBS back around 1985. Hindsight truly is 20/20. This video was epic, that tone haunting in only the way a genuine Rhodes can deliver on.

We were young and we knew, and our eyes were alive
Deep inside we knew our love was true
For a while we paid no mind to the past

Every night somethin' right
Would invite us to begin the dance
Somethin' happened along the way
What used to be happy was sad
Somethin' happened along the way
And yesterday was all we had
And oh, after the love has gone
How could you lead me on
And not let me stay around?
Oh, after the love has gone
What used to be right is wrong
Can love that's lost be found?
For a while to love each other
With all we would ever need
Love was strong for so long
Never knew that what was wrong
Baby, wasn't right
We tried to find what we had
'Til sadness was all we shared
We were scared this affair
Would lead our love into
Somethin' happened along the way
Yesterday was all we had
Somethin' happened along the way
What used to be happy is sad
Somethin' happened along the way
And yesterday was all we had
And oh, after the love has gone
