    Subaru owes you a commission check. I bought this car because of this video. You can't test drive off-road and I don't trust anyone at the dealership to help with these questions. I got stuck on a hill like this in Death Valley in my previous truck. This thing is amazing. Took it off the lot with 6.3 miles on it! Your comment about taking your wife's car off-road with 97 miles was priceless!

      @@PD-bt1ko It will never be a serious offroad rig because of the CUV platform and the fragility of plastic bumper covers, exposed rockers, and AWD. It can still be WAY more capable as an overlander than even this video shows though.
      Imagine if he disconnected the anti-swaybar(s), aired down some siped 75R15 ATs/MTs, added some underside armor, then installed a winch and a rear diff-locker. Most of these changes don't even have to be expensive.

    I think it says a lot for the Subaru, that someone who test drives cars for a living decided on one for his family. Many of these review channels have chosen Subaru’s for their own personal vehicle. I just purchased my second Outback in March and love it. The first time I’ve ever decided to buy the same model.

      I pray that you (both) have a rewarding ownership experience. I just completed my divorce from Subaru after 3 consecutive Outbacks. The CVT paired with the 2.5 is atrocious. I live in Wisconsin and the transmission wines and kvetches in winter (2018 2.5 Premium). My 2016 actually got stuck (stock tires) in my driveway after trying to dig out after a snowstorm. Our favorite model was the 2008. It was raw and predictable, handled well and the 4 speed auto worked flawlessly.

      @BoopSnoot 4 года назад +13

      @@baetsimpson I've driven the 6MT, and the whole point of a manual transmission is driving enjoyment, but the Crosstrek was so numb on feeling, so difficult to be smooth in likely because of driveline issues due to constant AWD, and gates so smooshy with a lifeless clutch and lackluster acceleration that there was nothing fun about it. Had to hard pass. If this at least had a DCT I could maybe see going with it now that it has a better engine, but CVTs are also just no fun.

    • @BoopSnoot
      @BoopSnoot 4 года назад +6

      @@baetsimpson Try them out first, I hated the CVT in the Crosstrek. Then go drive a Corolla CVT, its sooooo much better because it has a real 1st gear for launching, and then the CVT takes over. Basically go to a stop sign, and just floor it in the CVT Crosstrek, it feels a donkey is struggling on ice to pull you forward and its actually accelerating better from 30mph showing that its just the typical problem of CVT gearing. You can only get so wide a range on a CVT, so to get the rpm's low on the highway they geared it tall so its like starting a manual transmission in 2nd gear with lots of clutch slip. And again manual transmissions are NOT universally fun, only GOOD manual transmissions are fun. Drive a 2016 Colorado for example with the manual, they are horrible, I'd take an automatic on that car any day. This is coming from someone that has only ever owned manual transmission cars from SRT4, to Focus ST, to Abarth, to Corvette.

    I owned a 02 outback sport. Then a 07 OBXT. just bought a 2020 outback and after seeing this video I gotta say, I’m getting Subaru roots vibes. This is what makes Subaru different, remember the Baja xt? Yeah, they’re a little crazy over there. And we love it. I love the car I just got and have no regrets the 2020 are everything you could want. Honestly if you’re thinking about going Subaru now is the time. Their new 2020 models are priced well and out compete most similar models in poor road conditions. Subaru has stepped up their interior game as well. The new cross trek sport and adding turbos back to outback gives me some hope for Subaru where I was starting to loose it. ( forester x trim) yeah you know that orange line car...

    • @thorandmoljnir

      The other thing I would add is that the Crosstrek functions well not just for soft roading or overlanding but also as a daily commuter. It's very comfortable, easy to operate, and great on gas. While a Jeep may get into more difficult terrain (although I suspect the Crosstrek would go about 85-90% of the places a Jeep could) it makes for a terrible daily use vehicle. Harsh ride, poor handling, heavy and sad fuel economy, not to mention questionable build quality.

      @@afcgeo882 The thing is; they ARE actually better in some categories. They have a provably better AWD system (permanent) while all competitors use on-demand AWD. They also have higher ground clearance than the competitors. Their EyeSight system is probably one of the absolute best and most reliable aswell, which directly contributed to them topping charts in safety (Top Safety Pick Plus) which only a few cars all categories get, ans both the Forester and Outback got it while Crosstrek got Top Safety Pick, which is still very good. Those three things are big selling points, wouldn't you agree? I don't watch this channel enough to know whether he is a fanboy or not, but I certainly would have no trouble believing he just objectively think Subaru is the best brand for him.

    • @afcgeo882
      @afcgeo882 4 года назад

      NorthernOtyg Except that’s not at all the case. First off, there is no real (factual) benefit to a permanent AWD system versus one that disconnects an axle. The point of an AWD system is to provide torque to both axles, if slippage is detected or presumed and all AWD systems do just that. Driving with both axles powered in situations that don’t require it is pointless. There is literally no benefit to that. Meanwhile, other manufacturers do have better functioning systems with actual torque vectoring and locking differentials. Most Subarus have CVTs which are well-known to overheat and so the computers cut the engine power to avoid that, which means that iff-roading is actually all, but impossible. So what are Subarus superior at? What can an Outback do that say a Grand Cherokee cannot? What can a Forester do that a Rav4 cannot? One thing: blow two head gaskets. That’s it. There are better performing cars out there than a WRX STi (at the same cost) and there are many CUVs that are more utilitarian than Subarus too. A Subaru is just an average car with fun 1980’s TV commercials.
      Also, despite what he believes is the best car fir him, his literal job is to provide objective reviews of all brands. If he cannot do that well then he literally sucks at his job.

I will say, my Type A cringed to see you had over 110,000 unread emails!!!!! LOL. I was very impressed with the CVT too. My only dislike with the seats were the thigh support. You can’t raise the front of the seat, which I like to do since I tend to sit a little closer than most people with my alligator arms and needing extra leg support having had a hip replaced. But, they were still adequate for me and not a deal breaker....I’m comparing it to the new KIA Seltos, but this has the edge so far. Seltos is a first year model, and no adaptive cruise!! Completely agree with the ooomph over 60mph. I tested the passing power from 65-70 and found it great. And my normal daily driver is a Tesla Model 3 with the performance upgrade. I loved the paddles! The normally aspirated engine is refreshing compared to many engines today with turbo. Can’t imagine how this car would perform with good off-road or snow tires in the winter!!!

    I got my 2019 Crosstrek with a manual in large part because of your review of the 2018 MY ones. I gotta say - I love the manual transmission in it and while slow the car is a joy to drive. that fuel cutoff at 60mph in 2nd is a useful gauge of speed when accelerating down a ramp to merge. But that 2.5L in the 2021 - if something happened to my current one I'd have a conundrum on replacing it with that engine as an option, while also still wanting the stick. my 2010 outback had a CVT and I really had no complaints about how it worked.

Most awd cars in scandinavia are also sold with diesel engine because petrol is expensive and levorg use more fuel than a diesel car. I was very excited when I heard rumors the Crosstrek was going to receive an upgraded higher-output powerplant option. Although I enjoy the fuel economy of the FB20 engine in my 2014 XV Crosstrek, there are times that I more than wish, but actually needed a little more power.
      However, I was quite disappointed to find out that the new Crosstrek Sport, equipped with the FB25, cannot be had with the 6-speed manual transmission. While I do understand that Subaru drivers such as myself who actually do purchase manual transmission vehicles are now considered an extremely tiny minority of Subaru buyers, I would like to remind the company that it was devout enthusiasts such as myself that helped influence many friends and family members that would eventually become future Subaru drivers and/or owners.
      Make no mistake, that I am being quite genuine here. My 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek with the 5MT is a car I continue to drive, and as of this email being sent, is in service for the brake safety switch recall and major maintenance service. I even went forward with the warranty service of the excessive oil consumption issue years ago, which showed me back then that Subaru was quite dedicated to retaining customer trust for mistakes that were made.
      Again, I must reiterate I understand that with increasingly-stringent regulation on both emissions standards as well as fuel-efficiency requirements, manual transmissions are increasingly more-difficult to provide to customers, especially considering the separate testing needed. And in fact, the Crosstrek PHEV is a direct answer to one of the letters I wrote years ago to SOA, which will help positively contribute to the Subaru lineup's average fuel economy.
      However, Subaru is the final car manufacturer to provide a manual transmission with all-wheel drive on an SUV-like unibody platform. I am aware the FB20 will continue to offer the 6-speed manual transmission, but I cannot help but feel betrayed that the FB25 does not have a 6MT available. The days of a high-output turbocharged boxer engine paired to the high-riding ground clearance of the SUV-like models with the pure driving enjoyment of a manual transmission on a new Subaru vehicle are no-more. But, I truly think that this is a great opportunity to leave off the end of this generation Crosstrek's lifecycle with a 6MT paired to the Sport's higher-output FB25 engine in the spirit of those discontinued vehicles' spirits.

      @@AWDfreak That's a well-written letter. Thanks for taking the time to represent the small percentage of us. 👍

    Subaru didn't add the 2.5 engine for speed. They put in for power. For everyday use with out struggling to perform. Customers want an inexpensive utilitarian vehicle that can do the job.

    Been waiting on this review. I hope in the future we'll see you test it on the cross cut hill, and other trails. But I'm guessing you are waiting to install a skid plate and perhaps get some A/T tires. Just really curious how the added torque will help, or if the increase in HP will mostly just help with merging/passing speed.

    Hmmm...I'm seriously considering this car after watching the video. Thanks very much for the demo that's a great one.

    The only misstep I’ve found is the color they chose for the “sport” touches. They should’ve stuck with the lime green of the Onyx or the burnt orange of the Forester Sport.

      I think they should all be yellow. More consistent with Subaru historical colors.

      Driving Sports TV yellow as in the Blue & Yellow of the 90s rally cars? Yes! But this Plasma Yellow Pearl, especially for the new paint job offered on these Crosstreks ... no history I know of with that.

      Or perhaps matched it with the paint choice for any given car.

    It’s not an 80:20 split, which was a different system in the old automatic transmission Subies (ex: 4EAT).
    This system is called Active Torque Split (not Active AWD) and it provides a 60:40 f/r torque split. Since the Subaru has a center differential, it can send up to about 98% of power to the front or rear, if the opposing axle lacks all traction (on rollers, for example).

      Subaru confirmed the AWD info in the video is correct.

      Driving Sports TV You need to get a new Subaru contact then or follow up with them regarding changes. (Subaru is well-known for hiding and misstating actual AWD system information).

      When we did our Subaru AWD Explained video we confirmed with Subaru engineers the actual info. SOA published some training material that was incorrect. I believe that might be where the 60:40 number came from? But at the end of the day, nobody will feel the difference between the two numbers - whatever the real one is. Especially considering how fast power shifts when needed.

      I had a 2014 XV Crossturd premium. One snowy day the car began to slide sideways, the Crossturd cut my throttle input and the car kept sliding toward other cars on the road, took a few seconds to right itself (seemed like forever). The drivetrain was noisy (CVT shuddering, bucking and vibration) since the day I drove new it out f the dealer lot, the engine burned 1 qt of oil every 5 thousand miles, the paint and sheet metal very poor. then comes the bearings, axel shafts and other faulty components Subaru dealer service (3 different ones) say its normal. Total garbage. I don't buy anything these Subaru cult posters say about a mediocre vehicle.

    Thank you for such a clean, informative, & practical review. Your video was a major factor in my recent purchase of a 2021 Crosstrek sport magnetite gray!! Keep up the great work
