She had me and they raised me as theirs without ever telling me that he wasn’t my biological. They also never told the biological that I existed. I find out by when I did an Ancestry DNA test when tracing my roots. Found bio dad and connected with him (lives in the same city BTW). He was shocked yet happy to meet me. Told my mom, she denied it until she couldn’t anymore then she finally told me. “Dad” died a few years back. He took it to his grave. She clearly planned on doing the same. Now I’m Kerry’s age having to build a relationship with my real dad and siblings.

Not the same thing, but I learned at 42 that my mom and dad had a baby boy that passed away after birth. No one in my family ever spoke about this. My dad told me after a bad car accident, which left him with temporary cognitive issues. I didn’t think he was telling the truth, so I asked my aunt, his sister. She confirmed it. They went on to have three more of us and I am their youngest. I want to ask my mom about it but I don’t know what to say. My aunt said to just leave it alone, but I don’t understand why it was a secret. If my dad never got into that car accident, I don’t think I’d ever know.

Paternity is no big revelation to share with your child, similarly to adoption revelation, so in my estimation they are protecting a bigger secret and frightened that one door opening with cause others to open as well. Why would her career choice cause them to reveal that? It should have been revealed to her but not understanding why her career choice matters. It wasn’t uncommon for parental to be embarrassing or ashamed of getting fertility treatment, using surrogates, using donor sperm/eggs.

I feel like if you can't tell your adult child the truth in 2023, that says more about you as a parent than it does about the truth. If she had an affair and got pregnant, that was 40+ years ago. I honestly believe they are still lying to her which is sad because it’s preventing her from finding out who her biological dad is. Her dad might not be able to conceive but I believe her mother knows exactly who her real dad is. It’s sad they’re still lying.

My mother waited (actually told me thru my baby sister) until my 40th birthday to tell me the father I always thought was my deadbeat dad actually wasn't. My bio father was in the Navy and lived 20 mins from me all my life. Im 41 now and Im still not over it. Its a different type of pain.
Exact reason I had my baby DNA tested b4 he turned 1. We never have to wonder who the father is. He was starting to refuse so I made sure I got an ans permanently so my baby doesn't have to figure it out himself

I honestly think it wasn't a sperm donor and her mother either had an affair or her mother and father agreed on a family member to be the "donor" like his brother or a cousin. the way her father refuses to submit DNA and said if she keeps looking it will kill him sounds suspect (and dramatic, lol) and I think her parents do know who the donor is and it's sad and selfish they aren't telling her and willing to take it to the grave, they only told her since it was about to come out on a show. I hope she can finally get closure. even as a child she didn't feel a connection to him so sometimes your gut can be telling you something even when you don't realize it.

Well, she indicated recently that her father did submit to DNA testing. Also, she indicated she is in search of her bio father, however, she desires no relationship with him. She just wants the information for medical purposes.
I agree & I’m confused because I thought when I saw her interview on 20/20 with Robin Roberts that she had gotten her father’s DNA? but it didn’t make sense to me that it’s been 5years & they have yet to locate her Biological Father-with her money & resources and the show “finding your roots” has an immense amount of resources available to Date lineage back Hundreds of years-I recall them doing that with Pharrell, so I think that they’re withholding some thing. As someone who grew up without her father, I truly empathize with how painful her situation is really. Its like part of your identity is missing and because you’re only familiar with your maternal side, your family is very small. I hope she and others in similar circumstances find peace in this situation.

I think he pleaded with her to not find the test because her bio father is one of his family or shamefully close to the family. That IS actually very plausible. Because if the "dad" was related to the mother, when they trace her lineage it would show. Even if he was given away and they later found out they were related. They use more than DNA tests to do this research. They're going to use census records, birth/death certificates, and all public records of that to cross reference and back up findings. He would pop up as somebody's kid or whatever relative relation even without DNA and yet he's not. & It's not like she grew up with a void of who the "father's" family was. My feeling is that he don't want to submit his DNA because that's going to open up a whole huge can of worms. Her biological dad might be somebody she thought was her uncle or cousin from her so-called dad's side. Further speculation could lead anywhere. Moms may have had an affair because of all the static & tension that was in the house of her being the breadwinner. She could have had an affair, slept with a cousin or family/best friend (husband)... with his permission or without (as get back) and conceived in the process... The same way Black ppl don't trust doctors, plenty of us don't trust these genealogy sites either. Especially when they tell you out front that they don't know what they are going to be doing with your DNA after the test. It's not absolutely far fetched to think no one from the bio side has submitted their DNA or that the bloodline is dead before this technology became prevalent. ALL of this IS outside speculation either way tho... And multiple things can be true at once ✌🏾

this situation is fishy: the dad doesn't want to take a paternity test (why?), they tell an elaborate story about fertilization (in the 70's? while being broke?). Something ain't right. Him and that man did a DNA test TWICE and it came back that this particular man was his father instead . Kirk Franklin’s mom still insisted it wasn’t true and that the DNA test was a lie. Mama was sticking to her story no matter what. Come to find out his biological father actually did well for himself (he is a counselor/ therapist) and didn’t know all that time he was Kirk’s biological father . Essentially his mom robbed him of having a good father and good life , because Kirk grew up in the system. Mom just trying to maintain her reputation and save herself embarrassment, instead of being truthful with her child and hurting him in expense . Kerry Washington’s mom seems to be doing the same.

Her story sounds just like my moms. She was ‘adopted’ all my momma and s that they were two big people who had a lot of kids. This older generation has a lot of secrets and because of those secrets nothing will be right.
The fact that they won’t tell her who her father is and the DNA sample only shows her mother’s side does make me wonder if her mother was raped by a close family member.

I get the feeling it's something painful or shameful and her parents don't want that weight on Kerry. The issue may be a lot deeper than what we all think than just her parents not wanting to tell her. She could’ve been conceived from SA or maybe have been in illegal or harmful activities.

In such situations, apart from giving kids closure, they also need to be more concerned about their kids unknowingly getting involved in an incestuous relationship with biological siblings or family from the sperm donor’s side. It’s only fair. This also reminds me of the Kirk Franklin case. He finally found his dad but the mum kept denying even after the first test showed who the dad was. Had to be done again and still proved. She still denied! Both he and the dad were so heartbroken. 53 years of being lied to! 💔

Yup. We already know he's not the father, so him refusing the test means he wants to hide the results. The real father has to share some DNA with him, and that would be exposed. Probably his uncle, father, cousin or brother.

I was a teenage mom my son grew up without his father because I moved from the Caribbean islands to America when my son was 18 months but as he grew up and wanted to know who is father was I told him the truth . I’m one of those people mom who is very blunt I’m not going to lie to my son. Well he found out who his father was and chose not to have anything to do with him. Hey I was 19 I was young and made very foolish decisions. But I don’t regret having my son. I wish Kerry and her family the best.
Yeah this was crazy and it’s weird that her dad won’t take the test and why would his sperm be a non option? Celebrities are so weird it’s hard to gage when they’re bio’s are real or spicy enough to keep us interested in them. (Remember they used to call it “test tube babies? 😂)

I always warn people that if you get DNA testing, be prepared for family secrets. My parents died a decade ago and my immediate family are all deceased. I have an uncle who was the oldest but considered "outside" child of my grandfather and was still living. I found out a year ago that one of my friends is actually my cousin. Her father and my great uncle have been best friends all their lives. Her father is actually my Great Great Uncle smh
My Dad died when I was 2. My Mom told me he was an alcoholic and died in a car crash. I'm 53 now and it still bothers me til this day. My Mom would always say you're going to end up just like your damn Daddy. She only said that when I went out with my friends on the weekend and she knew I had been drinking. Let's say I never became an alcoholic and my Mom has always been bitter towards me probably because I look like him and we never had a close daughter/mother relationship. My sister in law took my place and my Mom treated her better....😐
its surprising b/c there are a plethora of children how do not look like their biological parents at all but possibly a family ancestor from decades or maybe even centuries back. like those "biracial/black" looking people born to completely white parents and they assume the mom stepped out but nope turns out the kid is a product of atavism like that south african woman or the irish actor guy who gets black roles in productions. so in a same race family this is definitely a shock and unfortunately for such a nice seeming woman like kerry to have to experience publically.
She doesn't look anything like her mother who I often saw her posed with. I never knew of her father until recently. I concluded he was deceased or not present. To find this out pretty much matches with the longstanding friction and revelations that were to come.
So... when I was 7, my dad was killed by a 15 year old drunk driver. Turns out.. homie had just found out he was adopted. And not from his parents. He struggled with this, was getting in trouble at school (ritzy private school). The parents had a family trip planned and decided because he had been "acting up", he was not going! So now hes adopted AND uninvited to family vacation. Left him home alone. Him and his baseball team buddies tore thru his rich parents expensive liquor collection, used all the "pizza $$" on drugs and when that all ran out, they broke open their lighters and huffed the butane inside. Homie was hurting bad. Then they stole his parents brand new benz, again 15 years old, and went for a joyride. He was driving. He passed out behind the wheel and his friend was steering from the passenger but his foot was HARD on the gas cause he was unconscious. They blew a red light at about 95 mph on a 45 mph road. T-boned my dad who was coming off a red light. The hit killed my dad instantly. It also pushed my dads car into the 4 cars across the intersection waiting at the red. A pregnant woman lost her child. An inseatbelted 7 uear old in the back seat was permanently injured. An elderly couple lost the husband and a man was critically injured with a TBI. So this secret caused ALL of this harm! And the adopted boy went to jail. My mom fought for him to be tried as a minor but the state wasn't hearing it because motor vehicle offenses are "adult responsibilities" (even tho he was 15, didn't even have a permit yet and didn't sign that "privilege " paperwork like we all do when we get out license). This traumatized 15 year old went to PRISON for 18 months. I can't even imagine. This secret permanently damaged 6 families. I deeply forgive him, he has written me letters over the years. I know he is sorry. And I am sorry for him too. He lives with this. Please be truthful about these things ❤

Before your video I was thinking this story was a little suspect. Once ,you said Kerri mention they lived in subsidized housing I knew paying to have an extra mouth to feed and we struggling was false. She either lying or the parents are about her biological father.

Its sad she found out the way she did, but it doesn't change the fact she had 2 loving parents who cared for her. Yes, he isn't the bio father but that is her father. If she wants to find the sperm donor she can, but that's if he wants to even be found. I'm not going to label them horrible parents. End of the day she had a stable family home more than most. I met Kerry on the set of Scandal. It was around 2014ish. I was a lowly extra. On that episode I was chosen to be in the scene in the situation room as the president's secretary. During a break I went to the craft services room. I was alone. Then Kerry walked in. She looked at me, smiled and said "Hi!!!" I felt like a million bucks!! Thank you dear Kerry!!! The episode to my recollection is a scripture ...

I saw an episode of SVU in which the mother refused to tell her son who his biological father was bc he was a product of an incestuous violation. I'm not suggesting that this occurred in Kerry's situation, but there could be a painful explanation for her conception that her mother is not ready to disclose. She had me and they raised me as theirs without ever telling me that he wasn’t my biological. They also never told the biological that I existed. I find out by when I did an Ancestry DNA test when tracing my roots. Found bio dad and connected with him (lives in the same city BTW). He was shocked yet happy to meet me. Told my mom, she denied it until she couldn’t anymore then she finally told me. “Dad” died a few years back. He took it to his grave. She clearly planned on doing the same. Now I’m Kerry’s age having to build a relationship with my real dad and siblings.

They went on to have three more of us and I am their youngest. I want to ask my mom about it but I don’t know what to say. My aunt said to just leave it alone, but I don’t understand why it was a secret. If my dad never got into that car accident, I don’t think I’d ever know.

I think he pleaded with her to not find the test because her bio father is one of his family or shamefully close to the family. That IS actually very plausible. Because if the "dad" was related to the mother, when they trace her lineage it would show. Even if he was given away and they later found out they were related. They use more than DNA tests to do this research. They're going to use census records, birth/death certificates, and all public records of that to cross reference and back up findings. He would pop up as somebody's kid or whatever relative relation even without DNA and yet he's not. & It's not like she grew up with a void of who the "father's" family was. My feeling is that he don't want to submit his DNA because that's going to open up a whole huge can of worms. Her biological dad might be somebody she thought was her uncle or cousin from her so-called dad's side.
Further speculation could lead anywhere. Moms may have had an affair because of all the static & tension that was in the house of her being the breadwinner. She could have had an affair, slept with a cousin or family/best friend (husband)... with his permission or without (as get back) and conceived in the process...

Yup. We already know he's not the father, so him refusing the test means he wants to hide the results. The real father has to share some DNA with him, and that would be exposed. Probably his uncle, father, cousin or brother.

I was a teenage mom my son grew up without his father because I moved from the Caribbean islands to America when my son was 18 months but as he grew up and wanted to know who is father was I told him the truth . I’m one of those people mom who is very blunt I’m not going to lie to my son. Well he found out who his father was and chose not to have anything to do with him. Hey I was 19 I was young and made very foolish decisions. But I don’t regret having my son. I wish Kerry and her family the best.
Yeah this was crazy and it’s weird that her dad won’t take the test and why would his sperm be a non option? Celebrities are so weird it’s hard to gage when they’re bio’s are real or spicy enough to keep us interested in them. (Remember they used to call it “test tube babies? 😂)

I am experiencing the same thing as Kerry , I can't seem to find anyone that is related to my mother on my DNA ancestry just folks on my father side and on my mother's dad side but no one from my grandmother or mother side of the family and those who are living won't help with the mystery.

I don’t understand Kerry’s motive for making this public. She keeps her personal life very private so it’s odd that she would put this out there knowing it would lead to a lot of speculation and judgment. It makes me wonder if she wrote this book to get back at her parents for hiding this from her for so long.

I always warn people that if you get DNA testing, be prepared for family secrets. My parents died a decade ago and my immediate family are all deceased. I have an uncle who was the oldest but considered "outside" child of my grandfather and was still living. I found out a year ago that one of my friends is actually my cousin. Her father and my great uncle have been best friends all their lives. Her father is actually my Great Great Uncle smh
My Dad died when I was 2. My Mom told me he was an alcoholic and died in a car crash. I'm 53 now and it still bothers me til this day. My Mom would always say you're going to end up just like your damn Daddy. She only said that when I went out with my friends on the weekend and she knew I had been drinking. Let's say I never became an alcoholic and my Mom has always been bitter towards me probably because I look like him and we never had a close daughter/mother relationship. My sister in law took my place and my Mom treated her better....😐

its surprising b/c there are a plethora of children how do not look like their biological parents at all but possibly a family ancestor from decades or maybe even centuries back. like those "biracial/black" looking people born to completely white parents and they assume the mom stepped out but nope turns out the kid is a product of atavism like that south african woman or the irish actor guy who gets black roles in productions. so in a same race family this is definitely a shock and unfortunately for such a nice seeming woman like kerry to have to experience publically.
She doesn't look anything like her mother who I often saw her posed with. I never knew of her father until recently. I concluded he was deceased or not present. To find this out pretty much matches with the longstanding friction and revelations that were to come.

So... when I was 7, my dad was killed by a 15 year old drunk driver. Turns out.. homie had just found out he was adopted. And not from his parents. He struggled with this, was getting in trouble at school (ritzy private school). The parents had a family trip planned and decided because he had been "acting up", he was not going! So now hes adopted AND uninvited to family vacation. Left him home alone. Him and his baseball team buddies tore thru his rich parents expensive liquor collection, used all the "pizza $$" on drugs and when that all ran out, they broke open their lighters and huffed the butane inside. Homie was hurting bad. Then they stole his parents brand new benz, again 15 years old, and went for a joyride. He was driving. He passed out behind the wheel and his friend was steering from the passenger but his foot was HARD on the gas cause he was unconscious. They blew a red light at about 95 mph on a 45 mph road. T-boned my dad who was coming off a red light. The hit killed my dad instantly. It also pushed my dads car into the 4 cars across the intersection waiting at the red. A pregnant woman lost her child. An inseatbelted 7 uear old in the back seat was permanently injured. An elderly couple lost the husband and a man was critically injured with a TBI. So this secret caused ALL of this harm! And the adopted boy went to jail. My mom fought for him to be tried as a minor but the state wasn't hearing it because motor vehicle offenses are "adult responsibilities" (even tho he was 15, didn't even have a permit yet and didn't sign that "privilege " paperwork like we all do when we get out license). This traumatized 15 year old went to PRISON for 18 months. I can't even imagine. This secret permanently damaged 6 families. I deeply forgive him, he has written me letters over the years. I know he is sorry. And I am sorry for him too. He lives with this. Please be truthful about these things ❤

Before your video I was thinking this story was a little suspect. Once ,you said Kerri mention they lived in subsidized housing I knew paying to have an extra mouth to feed and we struggling was false. She either lying or the parents are about her biological father.
Her mom was a professor. She was privileged. I don't understand this "struggle" narrative portrayed here. There's a lot of invented realities afoot. I always had the impression that Kerry's mom was like Shonda and Kerry had no dad.
This is a nightmare. Those parents ought to be ashamed of themselves…which they probably are with all the secrets. At this point that father should take that test. They are damn near dead and don’t have the decency to give their child a full story? I would steal the DNA. Maybe her mom conceived with a relative?

Its sad she found out the way she did, but it doesn't change the fact she had 2 loving parents who cared for her. Yes, he isn't the bio father but that is her father. If she wants to find the sperm donor she can, but that's if he wants to even be found. I'm not going to label them horrible parents. End of the day she had a stable family home more than most. Let's be real during the holidays how many people find out the Auntie or Uncle is really the biological parent 😂😂.

My heart goes out to her because I have been there myself. I have forgiven my biological father but my mother. It was a 50/50 chance. I have before she had died two years ago. I wish Kerry peace and love as she continue to heal from her unfortunate ordeal ❤🙏.

I met Kerry on the set of Scandal. It was around 2014ish. I was a lowly extra. On that episode I was chosen to be in the scene in the situation room as the president's secretary. During a break I went to the craft services room. I was alone. Then Kerry walked in. She looked at me, smiled and said "Hi!!!" I felt like a million bucks!! Thank you dear Kerry!!! The episode to my recollection is a scripture

I saw an episode of SVU in which the mother refused to tell her son who his biological father was bc he was a product of an incestuous violation. I'm not suggesting that this occurred in Kerry's situation, but there could be a painful explanation for her conception that her mother is not ready to disclose. I do believe that Kerry deserves the, nevertheless.
