@jhi67 Go to command prompt. Type netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt. Hit Enter. Type netsh winsock reset. Hit Enter. Restart your computer. Now you should be able to renew your ip address. Here's a brief explanation if you're curious. Sometimes, the TCP/IP which is a set of rules telling your computer how to connect to the Internet gets corrupted. The netsh command can reset it back to it's normal state. Winsock tells how software accesses the network, it can also be reset using netsh.

This has nothing to do with the common "limited or no connectivity" issue XP users suffer. When they have the issue they don't have a Zero IP address. The address starts with 169.254, which means that it can't just renew the IP to fix it. Usually that issue is either driver related, in which you have to reinstall the driver, or Windows related, in which case you actually have to repair the issue within Windows. It has absolutely nothing to do with the IPconfig release and renew.

When I got to the second step, which is the "release" command...I got three lines of error messages. I FEEL that it has something to do with the DHCP issue.
This seems to only be good for when the computer in question connects good to an internet connection and the user just wants to turn it off and on, but not getting a computer that has issues to get on. Waste of time.

I had this problem many times on Windows XP. I solved it by switching my PCI Network card to another slot.
It worked! It worked! The dislike button worked!
It works in the windows xp setup,

Yes, if you actually want wireless you can buy a wireless USB dongle. They work pretty good in most cases.

windows 8 doesnt have a repair option and im not sure where to find the network connections window.
