I remember seeing the USS Gilmore, AS-16, in Charleston SC in 1970, where she replaced the USS Holland after it was decommissioned. For a time, my destroyer was tied up to the same pier as the Gilmore before we went into drydock for a refit.

My ship, along with the Macdonough (DLG-8), and Kenneth D. Bailey (DD-713), was deployed to the Med. from May until December of '69. Our normal berth was Pier Papa, but in late December we shifted to a yard pier. Fun fact: there were two of the new Perry-class frigates moored across the pier from us. They were being sent to.......the Iranian Navy.

In spite of the depth gage reading 100 feet while Schade was topside announcing that Gilmore was lost, it’s a great telling of that page of history. Many Periscope films would great to use in classrooms.

I loved watching all these military shows (Sea Hunt, Combat, 12 o'clock High, etc.) when I was a kid. In case you haven't noticed, RUclips has thousands of hours now of REAL film footage covering everything of WWII. (Combat photographers were everywhere!) It's my guess most all of this was classified during WWII and unclassified only recently. (There were a LOT of things my parents' generation were NOT told DURING WWII, and things that were outright lies.) The story about the breaking of the Enigma machine cypher of WWII is really intriguing. So, when do you think we'll learn the real truth about the Trump assassination attempt in Butler, PA? My answer: WE (those reading this) NEVER will. Our kids' GRANDKIDS might.) PS: "Band of Brothers" and "Pacific" are as real as it gets. All you women who are CRAVING to be in combat units need to and should watch these two documentaries. It's a shame MEN have to be in combat. WOMEN ... never!

Your conspiratorial view of the world is without any basis. The secrets of World War II were swiftly revealed after the war. The enigma secret was an exception because many small countries used enigma type machines for decades after the war. Naturally, it was useful to be able to decode their communications.

History reveals few conspiracies. I fear and hate conspiracy theories because they are the gateway to hell. what was fascism, but a conspiracy theory?
