My cousin was lost on that boat. Of course, that was years before I was born but my mom, who is turning 93 in December, still remembers him. Still talks about what a handsome boy he was. His name was Charlie Nixon and he was 19 years old. There is a tombstone here, of course the grave is empty, but it is just a sad remembrance of what all of them boys went through and what they gave. There is a family story that he couldn't swim. When it was his turn to show that he could, a friend of his took his place. It wouldn't have mattered here, of course, but it puts a real face on the war and what young men were willing to give up. God Bless them all.

I made it through my 21 years on Submarines using one simple phrase. I may not be able to call you an Idiot, but I certainly can think it. God Bless Submariners.
This is not the same Growler docked in New York. The sub in the film is SS-215 and was lost at sea in late 1944. The Growler in New York is SSG-577 and had a brief career as the first sub to carry and launch misses at sea. That Growler went on several extensive patrols, but was never in battle.
I have 2 shell back diplomas, 1 from my dad UDT member on sub, an uncle Bill aboard Navy ship. After Bill spent 13 months recovering from Pearl Harbor. note: his brother Tom also survived Pearl Harbor attack in army.. An my dad, their brother Joe joined Navy on 8th, 1941.
I cry every time I watch these. These brave, beyond brave men who did this, should all be given medals. I don't think I could go under water even a few feet without panicking and screaming like a girl. God bless our Submariners.

Shellback here Crossed in USS Jouett DLG 29 on Dec 12 1972 en route to Singapore for R&R off the SAR gunline in the Tonkin Gulf. Jouett rescued three USN pilots. I was 18 years an 1 month old. Those were the days.
Which boats were they I know 4 sure Harder was one and there is another one 4 sure that actually sunk enemy ships AND subs 2 while lit up by flares & semi surfaced. Those guys were the best of the best outta the west. More guts than brains but they got the jobs done...
As a marine vet i dont think the cap deserved the CMH .. He did not have his deck guns armed with a radar contact on the serfice.. The ex o now he is the one that saved lives and got the boat home...Semper Fi
Subs had a somewhat anemic deck gun. Early in the war they were 3 inch and later most had a single 5 inch gun and it would take many hits to take out even an escort much less a destroyer. Meanwhile, they were in the open with no protection and one well placed round would destroy the subs ability to dive so it was not a practical weapon except for smaller boats.
Seems to be a running USN joke William W Williams.... We had a master Chief same name in fact some 44 years ago... I actually named my cat is named after him because he was such a character like out of cartoons. My cat is his name sake >>>Billy Bubba,,,, Need I even say more when I am high above a civil war field memorial circa 1996 way out in Pennsylvania where I live high above a bluff I am looking down on this Civil war memorial 4 the south and I find some kin folk of mine and a William W Williams.... I gotta scratch my head at this point in time.... Go back 40 some years I get mistakenly misidentified as a police suspect n my way home from work and then I get locked up in a tiny Texas town jail cell with U guessed it Willy William (Billy) Williams.... I am not kidding either.... U just cannot make up stuff like that.... Need I tell anyone about a truck I recently rescued from this old abandoned property the new owners give me an old Ford truck... Guess the name on the title please...

My grandfather, Clinton Teeters served on that fine submarine. It was an honor to tour his ship with him in NYC 2 times. Very proud of him

Thomas Jr. I agree 100%. I thought that I missed something.. They loved to give the medals to the officers. The higher rank the better.
The XO, LCDR Arnold Schade, went on to rise to the rank of Vice Admiral, and was COMSUBLANT during the disappearance of the USS Scorpion in 1968.
