I used to have a miniature matchbox toy like this before, it got buried in the beach sand and was lost forever along with my little diggers and dump trucks, this video is giving me nostalgia.
Sophisticated equipment. Most have no clue about the workings of things or how things are built , love this show. Glad to see a human element still welding on these.
Actually the narrator didn’t explain that part properly. The plasma cutter system ALSO has a separate drilling head to drill holes and THEN comes back with a tap to thread the holes, all automated. FINALLY, the actual plasma cutting starts and cuts all the pieces out and leaves a “skeleton”/remnant for the burn table helpers to remove after taking the cut parts out first. How do I know this? I used to work at this exact plant. It’s located in Brooklyn Park, MN. I was a welder there. The more you know😎
Always wanted to know how many parts actually go into such moving heavy machinery! Props to the person who invent these bcoz it takes lot of imagination and physics !!
Paving is one of the toughest jobs in the United States due to long and super hot hours it gets to about 130 F behind a paver during summer here in Georgia it can get hotter and you’ll feel like you’ll run out of sweat eventually but you never do and during winter time in 8 F weather you’ll start with a big coat on but by time the first load of asphalt hits the screed you’ll have that coat off and start sweating lol. I love paving!
Hot mix asphalt is about in the 300 degree marks when it comes off the trucks, it’s pretty hot stuff in other words, it like standing next to a pizza oven when your near the hopper or screed area.
I used to be a mechanic for CAT and I mainly worked on pavers. Our dealership always bought the machine separately so I'd have to put them together. And that was rough. Also it will never ever ever be that clean again. After the first use its bad
Barber Greene Company .. William Benton Greene and his partner invented this, my great grandfather. He's in the asphalt hall of fame and was commissioned by Eisenhower for creating some of the first roads within the interstate system. Now you know.
That hardly told me anything! I hoped to learn more than "the parts are painted & bolted together", I wanted to know what the parts were & how they worked!
I went with 3 of my crew to a class on roadtec pavers and got a tour through the manufacturing process I have to say they are much better then cat pavers using these machines and understanding the concept and mechanics of them make my job as screw man much easier so the rakers or people looting don’t have to kill their selfs
I work at a asphalt paving company and man when i tell u this machine is complicated to use ph my goodness man. But the milling machine is whats even worse
David Anderson, I think they meant for the heating elements to heat the screed, so the asphalt doesn’t stick to the plates, once the screed is heated up to the same temperature as the asphalt, then a thermostat turns them off automatically to prevent damaging the plates, some pavers on the market still come with propane gas heat as well.
Watching this i fucking nyss My 3 years i worked on the road. Goddamn those summers were brutal att the time, but THE smell of new asphalt and working for 18 hours straight everyday and then driver Home at 4-5 oclock in the morning watching the Sun go Up. Damn..

Their are 4 facilities in the US 2 in the US maple Grove mn and i think like pa but not sure the other 2 are in China
A new machine is made every 2 days for the pavers and i think 1 for the Compacters .The Facility is located in maple grove mn and there are probably 500 workers. i use to work on the cnc plama cutting tables
@@jacksoneggers2481 very interesting, I used to work at a Ford plant back in the 90s and we figured it out that it took approximately 21 hours from start to finish to build 1 car.
Blame the shuttle buggy, or the side spreader. Cat pavers are too nice (unless not cleaned properly and those rollers at the front aren’t cleaned every now and again)

Thanks for the video. I will build this as my DIY project this weekend!
I need to get one of those threading plasma cutter.
That's what I was thinking 🤔😂

nevermind about the plasma cutter i need one of those little carts they use to haul the hopper to the rest of the frame
@@wlder20 I learned how to program CNCs on a turret press with a plasma torch in the late 1980s. They are fun to watch.
You shouldn't be allowed to use safety scissors let alone a plasma cutter.

Man, those initial bends blows my mind. The amount of pressure to do that is INSANE.
Agreed, the plates seem really thicc too
Well that was a fascinating video about asphalt pavers
Just Some Guy without a Mustache i work in asphalt and trust me those help alot!!

Try flat roofing in New Mexico or Arizona in the summer...
@@buckhorncortez I pave year round in New Mexico and I can attest to that
Just wrapping up my 28th year. Dont ya love the roofing and concrete guys who think their job is just a hard and hot. Lol

Was your great grandfather from Dekalb, IL?
Asphalt Hall of Fame, huh?
"the plasma cuts and threads"...uh.. you sure about the threading part?
ChadW yeah
It said the machine. I wouldn't be surprised.
Yes, although this video didn't show it, there is a second head that can tap holes built into the same machine
Literly yes man

Love CATerpillar. My preferred manufacturer of heavy equipment and engines. I’m an operator btw.
Wouldn't be a big fan of their pavers though biteill or vogual are much better
I loved going in that factory for School. The tour guide said you can get a CAT in any color, as long as its black and yellow!
1:49 OSHA for the camera.
Yea dudes not trying to lose his arm or his job 😂😭
Love when I turn on the subtitles they are really accurate!

So much fun clearing out the hopper. What's fun is when these break down and you have to clear out cooled asphalt to the screws 😂
Thanks for the recipe, i'll be sure to use this one next time I need to build a pavement machine
Apparently you can build one in under 5 min. 👍
You never know! 🧐🤔
2:46 me driving into the Pay 'n' Spray to remove my wanted level
So true literally
Lol
The puns never get old on this show
Step 1: get all the pieces
Step 2: put them together
Never stop making these
The track for this one is sick. I’d love to find it somewhere
Thanks Discovery for sharing it with us, I grew up along these series.
What is that 0:17 a paver for ants? It has to to be at least two or three times bigger for a real road.
Then the roller operators come in and leave the bumps. Lmao.
I want one of these so I can drive anywhere without roads
Starkl3t and you can make roads then
You’ll need some asphalt then
You'd need a entire crew to go everywhere you go!
That would be cool, but the road would be made behind you, instead of in front. Please don't get mad at me if anything triggers anyone.
Gimme a call. I have an old one I'll sell ya lol

Haha, "the screed."
It's important that the screed is rubbed, because the screed has all the screed juice.
good to see how these are made Pavers made the roads
The asphalt paver is from CAT. Its model number is AP655F.
The Blaw know paving company, Rochester kent. Closed in 27 Febrary 1997.
Nice little Beatles reference at the end there 👌

When the screw man screws up everybody has a bad day! Roadtecs are better machines. No doubt there. Wirtgen pretty high end as well.

Excellent
It's crazy how machines are made with machines, that were also made with machines, and so on.
Wait to you see how machine tools such as the plasma torch and the press brake are built. That was one of my first jobs after college.
It's in HD!

Now we need a video about the machines that breakup the asphalt and spit it into the backs of dump trucks.

And... it's not why precision is critical, it is precision, or more properly, precise.
Cold bend no annealing?
Salaam dari Indonesia.
Should see how awesome the fuckery is when the electronics malfunction on these jewels. The roadway rides like a cane field.
The state of Arizona has never heard of these
And this is why they cost over $300K...

That’s called a “brake”, not a bend.
I own a paving company, "And I approve this message". except for the plasma threading part.
How about the part about the "heating elements keeping the mix workable". Laugh
