ANS: Thick plate. The positive ions from thick plate will be deposited on the thin negative plate. Thus, Postive terminal should be given thick.

The thick rod of impure copper plate is to be attached to the positive terminal of the battery because when electric current is passed through the copper sulphate solution, it gets dissociated into copper and sulphate. The free copper, being positively charged, gets drawn to the negative terminal of the battery and gets deposited on it. On the other hand the loss of copper from the solution is regained from the impure copper rod which is attached to the positive terminal of the battery.
Hw answer= The thick plate of impure copper should be attached to the positive terminal of the of the battery and the thin plate of pure copper on the negative terminal because the froom the impure copper plate the copper will leave and get deposited on the thin plate of pure copper , thus leaving behind only the impurities and also the purification of copper happens .

we have given that the copper ions are transferred to the thin copper plate, then the thin pure copper plate must be connected to the negative terminal of the battery. In this case the other electrode that is impure copper rod must be connected to the positive terminal of the battery.

There is a small magnet needle inside the plastic outside of compass. Due to magnetic effect of electric current, it moves and shows deflection.
