  • John Oliver returns to help us process and come to terms with the end of Jürgen Klopp's colossal run as Liverpool manager. In this conversation, John and Rog discuss the ways Klopp has been fully embraced by the city of Liverpool, how it was never really about the trophies, and now the legacy he will leave behind.

13:48 starts an absolutely EPIC section from John. "Trophies are essentially ephemeral, right? You only *own* them temporarily, then you hand them off to someone else who'll take them from you. What he was about was moments, right? Moments can't be taken away from you. You keep those forever.... Moments are tattoos on your soul, right? They're there FOREVER."
I want that section as a short just so I can make sure I keep it saved for when Future Jim needs that reminder.

When Klopp left Mainz the whole city cried but we were not bitter knowing that he was meant to achieve bigger things with bigger clubs. We wished him well and many of us proceeded to follow BVB and Liverpool with pride. It's good to see Liverpool fans are feeling the same. John Oliver says what I've been trying to articulate to people about Klopp leaving. The sadness of his departure has a little to do with football, but most of it is to do with the man and what he gave us as a person. Who he is.
Been a supporter since the late 80's and have been falling out of love with the game a lot in the last decade. Genuinely thinking of walking away from it all after Sunday. Not because the success might be over - I saw 1 title victory and 30 years of pain that never made me feel like walking away - but because I truly cannot understand how to move on from such a man.
A club I have loved with a man I admire more than most.
It's going to be a sad Sunday night.

Jurgen taking the players hand-in-hand to the fans against West Brom was due to the fans leaving early the week before and him asking them to stay to the end. Against West Brom, the fans stayed and Jurgen celebrated them and that he, the players, and the supporters were now together.
In that moment, the game didn't matter. He'd reminded us who we were.

Jürgen is a spiritual and faithful man, and his devoutness for the visceral and sublime moments, big or small, are as John Oliver says, moments are tattoos on your soul. And to make people appreciate and glorify those moments, to really live in the present and indulge or luxuriate in it, is no simple feat. He gave people spirituality, via artistry and creativity in sport. A gift that cannot ever be repaid, but one given as a duty and act of faith. Bravo, Jürgen.

Everything John Oliver said was on point, especially the "you're not my real dad sentiment". He's so much more than trophies. For me, as a more recent supporter of LFC, I feel like the Carabao Cup final summed that up perfectly. I remember this overwhelming sense of pride in this team a few minutes before Virgil scored his second goal (I said what I said). When the supporters sang the most beautiful rendition of Allez Allez Allez was a MOMENT for me.
Up until this point Klopp leaving was something that was going to happen eventually. John's "thank you" has suddenly made it very real. This is it and I'm not prepared.

Such a joyous podcast and kudos to Rog for putting aside his own pain and pride to do this with John! I believe someone once said “when you die they finally give you good reviews”. Not so for Jürgen Klopp. From Mainz to Dortmund to Liverpool the man has made people hope, dream, laugh, cry, celebrate and deal with the grief of his departure. I would add that he was also what the premier league above all desperately needed as an antidote to the toxic and depressing atmosphere that invariably surrounded Mourihno after his first Chelsea spell. Sad to think we will soon also see the departure of Pep from the PL. They will leave a huge hole behind which will be very hard to fill.

Rog needs his own show on TV. Top man. Funny, smart, empathetic and asks questions the viewer would ask not the boring cliched ones that always get asked.

Gentlemen, I cannot tell you how wonderful this podcast has been, and you killed me when you said that Jurgen goes off into the sunset on a longboat!!!
    That was soooo special!!!👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾❤️⚽️❤️⚽️😊
    Thank you KLOPP!!!

Thoroughly enjoyed that. Thank you both 🩵 Pep may have my soul locked in a chest in his dungeon but Klopp fills a very particular and important place in all of our hearts. The league will not be the same without him. Really does feel like a heavy loss. Is there a single content creator anywhere in the world with better intros and outros? Phenomenal Rog, as always

Great words, memories and a very fitting appraisal of one of life's good guys. Isn't it a pity that more folk in public eye jobs cannot be as human as Jürgen has been...
    Well done chaps, great video...

One of the rare moments where somebody can speak to the emotions we are and no doubt will feel for some time to come. To paraphrase J.O. it's not about what we won, it's about how Jurgens teams made us feel.

I desperately need John to abandon reason and common sense, defy all instincts to continue to produce award-winning content on HBO, and become Rog's full-time partner on the wonderful crap that is MiB. Their back and forth brought me so much joy and levity on the day after Klopp left my beloved Liverpool.
    LEG ON ROG!!

I'm a massive blue and I concur with everything that John said here regardless of the trophies he won he brought something back to Liverpool FC and that was their identity he did the same in the late 2020's that Shankly did when he took over.....

I was not a fan of Liverpool before Klop. I half hearted supported Arsenal because of friends but got tired of their fragility.
I was looking for a club. And I heard that first press conference.
I became a believer and a fan and I loved that indomitable spirit and marvelous football. All thanks to Jurgen Klop.

Jürgen reminded us how to believe again. As a manager he gave us success, joy, entertainment and pride. In return he will always be a Redman to us wherever he ends up. He will Never Walk Alone as long as there's a Liverpool supporter around.
I'm SO glad that Jürgen is a Red! Now will someone please stop cutting bloody onions!

If Arne Slot says in his first press conference something along the lines of "I'm not your real dad, but I'll try to bring you some happiness.", I think he'll be off to a good start with us fans at least. ^,^

Good afternoon, Rog, you beautiful human. I’m a newer GFOP - started listening this winter after season 2 of that fantastic collaboration with Tommy Vietor! I love the pod and how accessible you make European Football to us Muricans.
I save the pod for my weekends and work around the house, and just got done with this one. I loved Jon Oliver and the conversation about Klopp’s next challenge!
Here’s a question for a potential future pod - what about Klopp heading the USMNT?!?!

John - when is the Jürgen Klopp LWT Special coming❓
It probably has to be a special, as it seems almost impossible to fit everything in one normal LWT episode.
This man has so much substance - and John Oliver is able to recognize and communicate that 🗽
Good good good for humanity in these crazy times 😊
