Thank you again for organising the meet up! Those folio editions are lovely, there is nothing more satisfying than finding something you want second hand 😊
We were in America's largest bookstore last week and I stumbled on a truly gorgeous Folio edition of Pickwick Papers, satisfyingly hefty and abundantly illustrated, the words "Poverty & oysters always seem to go together" inscribed in silver on the front cover. We already have five or six copies of Pickwick but I was sorely tempted to get it.
I also managed to pick up a copy of The Warden that day which I’m so pleased about because I’ve wanted to read some Anthony Trollope for the longest time. Such a wonderful day - thank you again for organising it! And thanks for the podcast recommendation!
I went online to see if I could find the Open Door as it was fairly recent and there it was - in a shop here in Norway - so I ordered it - should arrive within the week!! Thanks.
Love the Japanese picks, I've read one 👍. Then the child of sorrow is one I'm picking up now, thanks! After lovng noli me tangere the next classic from the Philippines I have on my radar is Luha ng Buwaya (Crocodile's Tears) by a compatriot of Rizal's. The Open Door edition is so pretty too. Fab haul.
I am so jealous of that Margaret Oliphant book also I must read some Japanese literature, I've read a bit of Manga recently and enjoyed that, so I must branch out. As far as horror books go I read IT recently, I wish I had read it when I was a teenager, because I would have been terrified by it then, but it just doesn't hit the same way as an adult. If you want a spooky recommendation 'The Loney' by Andrew Michael Hurley is good. My boyfriend who doesn't even usually read books recommended it to me, its a good spooky autumnal classic.
Regarding the Open Door - it is part of a collection by British Library, and I own that as well as collections of Arthur Conan Doyle, Wilkie Collins, Bram Stoker, and an anthology called Penny Bloods. There are a number of others that I have my eye on as they are just so beautiful!
Amor Towles, all of his books are brilliant. There's an evocative Christmas present scene in 'A Gentleman in Moscow' which I need to re-read nearer the season.
Good morning Katie (and all of the other Book Tubers) 😊❤ Yes, I truly love books... the smell of them, the feel of the paper under my old fingers; I just can't get into reading on devices 😩 My channel might be an ASMR Cigar Lounge kind of thing happening, but I do enjoy my "down time" as well. Sometimes I'm dressed in formal wear smoking a cigar and sipping a cocktail, whilst other times I'm in my house coat, drinking my morning coffee, snacking on chocolate fudge and smoking my pipe. Well, the other day I decided to take a dip into the book tube world and spent nearly a half an hour reading JRR Tolkien's wonderful alliterative verse poetry, "The Lays of Beleriand." Yeah, thanks to Peter Jackson, most know of The Hobbit as well as the Lord of the Rings, but how many know of his other fine works? I'm 60 now and grew up with JRRs books. All of them. He's my favorite fantasy author. I'll upload that video in a day or so. Thanks for all you do, Katie ❤
PS: The book you're reading made me think of Tolkien because one of the creatures in The Lord of the Rings was called an Oliphant. It was like an elephant, but much larger. Anyway, my 1st booktube video is live 😁👍
I know you work as an editor but it’s been a dream of mine to open a bookstore in my local town. I just need a partner to cover half the costs but it’s still going ahead.
Thank you for organising. It’s great book shopping with everyone and finding bookish treasure.

Hi, have you ever read Les Miserables?
