- Closeup pads are often seen as an essential must-have item for a magician. But is it?
Ultimately, whether to use a close-up pad or not is a matter of individual choice and the specific needs of the performer.
It's a tool that can enhance your magic, but it's not a strict requirement for practicing or performing close-up magic.
Some magicians swear by close-up pads for the advantages they offer, while others prefer a more minimalist and adaptable approach to their magic.

Closeup pads, Yay or nay?
I started as a bartender magician, so having a close up pad helped extend the life of my cards. As long as the close up pad could fit on the bar counter and allowed for a full spread, I would use it.
Nice. Do you use a special pad that is washable or water-resistant when doing bar work?
@@YinHoweMagic I used a Vincenzo di Fatta pad. 3 pads lasted me the length of my tour as a bartender magician (roughly ten years of nightly performance). The issue with them was that the top layer would come off after time. The one with the looped edges is something I would try if I was ever to get back into bar magic.
@@johngerard671 Yeah. I think that was the intention of the sewn edges, to keep the layer from splitting.
I used a closeup mat when I was bartending, I really like Patrick’s Mats Spectrum but most of what I did didn’t really have to have a mat unless it was a coin Matrix effect using a [
I guess it makes much more sense to use one at the bar
Yes and no depending on your performance situation. Right now I’m doing lots of table hopping so don’t need a close up pad
There seems to be two extreme camps re using closeup pad during strolling/table hopping. Some say good to use a small mat, some totally against setting anything down on the table. Hehe
@@YinHoweMagic I’m in the latter then. The most I put down is my card box!
