  • DCS AJS-37 VIGGEN is still in the Beta stage and there will be some missing features in these videos.
    In the following video I take part in a quick strike package where I'm tasked with taking out as many targets as possible who have landed with craft on the beach. I have to do this with 4 RB-75s which are mavericks. Then RTB.
    I am still learning all of the basics of this airframe so I will make mistakes along the way.

    *_Is filled with Swedish patriotism_* ....... I mean.. I moved to Norway. But I can still celebrate Swedish aircraft right?
    PS. I can't believe Norway bought the fucking F-35 (without engines!) instead of our neighbors Gripen offerings. We're a small-ass country, we need small, flexible, field-serviceable aircraft. _Sigh_

    • @timmy3822
      @timmy3822 7 лет назад +1

      Wait, without engines? Are they developing their own or something? I'd have thought the Gripen would have been a much better alternative. Cheaper, very durable and more suited to operations within Scandinavia. I imagine the service periods for F-35's are pretty intense.

    • @ShadeAKAhayate
      @ShadeAKAhayate 7 лет назад

      You *do* understand that these contracts are not connected to any patriotism, right? There are spheres of interest and economical influence, there are obligations between people in power, etc etc. Consider this deal paying a tribute to US, but where your country actually gets something in return.

    • @timmy3822
      @timmy3822 7 лет назад +2

      Shade whoever said anything about patriotism having anything to do with it? I'm sure bribes and underhand deals play a part in these contracts however it can't be denied that the choice for Norway to go for the F35 as opposed to a more affordable and potentially better aircraft for the area of operations is a bit odd to say the least.

    • @Mythricia1988
      @Mythricia1988 7 лет назад +5

      We're having to buy the engines separately, for whatever reason. It's a mystery to everybody, and nobody people ask seems to be able to explain with a straight face why they're just not delivered with the airframes. Lets not even talk about the fact we're not allowed to fly the F-35's we already own and have taken delivery of. And by taken delivery of, I mean they're in the US still. Oh and we're building our own factories here to be able to support the maintenance of the F-35's, because shit's so fucking expensive. How much do those cost I wonder?
      That inability to explain anything can basically be extended to the entire purchase though - several of the higher-ups in the Air Force as well as the military in general have publicly spoken out about their disbelief that we bought this thing. Nobody wants it, the air force least of all. The public in general hates everything about it. Pilots don't want anything to do with it.
      I have no doubt that the F-35 can serve a purpose, and heck, in 20 years it may even be a good aircraft in general. But it's terrifyingly un-suited to this country's mode of operation - the needs of our air force, the nature of the land and the strategies that our military is built on, all of it is completely at odds with every imaginable aspect of the F-35. The F-16 was a pretty good fit, which is why we've had it for so long that we just flat-out _have_ to replace them (fractures developing in 40 year old airframes, impossible to repair with any guarantee of safety. Nevermind the reduced permissable G-load turning them into basically training aircraft). We need something small and maintainable. We're a small country.
      The Gripen would have been incredible. Heck, even Russian airplanes would have been a much better fit, although they don't really love us, so I doubt it'd be a good bet, logistically... Eurofighter would'v been good too, we even considered it but instead decided to burn 10 billion US$ (not an exaggeration, that's the real price) on largest public procurement project in the country's history, the fucking F-35.
      What we need here is the ability to operate on a small number of relatively low-brow airfields, and just like the Swedes, the actual "battle plan" counts on our ability to operate aircraft in very rough conditions, being able to land and maintain aircraft on roads and make-shift fields, being able to operate in harsh conditions, unclean conditions.. Being able to operate in very confined space, etc. This is the same ideology that Sweden follows, and as such, they create aircraft to suit their needs perfectly - that's why the Gripen, and the Viggen before it, were capable of things like landing on a motorway, receive fuel and ordnance from a 2-3man crew with a truck in the space of 30 mintues, then _reversing to turn around_ and taking off with essentially VTOL capabilities, from the same motorway.
      And all that is not just a wish - that's the literal foundation of the military concepts the country relies on. That is the _PLAN_, not a backup, not a what-if. We know we can't protect our airfields for long, we only have 7, and most of them probably wouldn't even pass as a last-resort backup strip if compared to American. Yes, that's _seven_ military airbases in the entirety of our country. If something goes bad, they're gone. And we know that. So does Sweden, they've always had the same plan, because it's an intelligent plan given the constraints and opportunities we face here.
      The F-35 is a colossal travesty, and an expensive one at that, costing twice the amount of money (or more! That's only counting the "retail" unit price for the F-35, nevermind our initial bid and the literal factories we are building to maintain it) compared to a Gripen or Mig, while completely lacking the ability to perform the roles our air force relies on to be able to carry out it's function in a defensive scenario.
      +Shade - Don't talk to me about paying a tribute to the US. We invented and build technology that the US military of all branches use. We wrote and sold you the software that the beloved AC-3 AWACS runs. We sell them missile defense systems that we developed. That's enough "tribute" for me. There's no patriotism here, I've no clue where you got that idea from. The only thing here is a realist view of what we need in this country, and big fat-ass F-35's are not on that list, never was. There's a reason we don't own F-15's, F-22's, F-14's, in fact the only modern jet fighters we've ever owned were Canadair F-104's, Sabres, a literal handful of F-5's and later F-16's. Because they make sense, they're lightweight aircraft that fit the way our country, infrastructure, military and air force works.

    • @ShadeAKAhayate
      @ShadeAKAhayate 7 лет назад

      +Mythricia So essentially this "military contract" is a bogus, made up to pump the cash out of your country to support US production of F35, a zero-percent long loan of sorts. OK, let's not call that a "tribute", let's call that an investition to projects you don't need, feeding economy not related to yours and lining the pockets of rich people not of your country, if that gives you warmer feelings. Same goes with technology, developed for AWACS, or any military hardware your country supplies to US. I hardly doubt these are sold at reasonable price.
      BTW, to all who asked, I took patriotism out of the head comment.
      Anyway, if you feel that contract had something to do with illegitimate (in any way!) transfers of country's wealth, I guess your country has a high court, which can override this sort of deals. Use it. I doubt it will be success (this is how interstate tribute system is nowdays), but at least you can say, - "Well, at least I tried".

      That would be a tad bit too long to render and upload... but I'd only do that if people want to see it. Only a handful have ever spoken up about it. Attention retention is key, which is why a heavily edited clip does better.

      I learn a lot from the death time.. Most people think you are only just holding stick and only fly straight or just fly AP. But if you pay good attention you can see a lot of stuff is going on. A lot of stuff that will be important later on the fight. But i can understand that it looks very boring for the untrained eye or people that simply don't pay enough attention. And especially with Ralf and it's team with all the team work chatter it can be pretty interesting. But yeah cutting out some down time is not to big of a deal as well.

    It feels like the Viggen would fit right in on an F5E vs Mig21 server with some shoehorning.
    The Finns had Mig21Bis fighters so there was a historical chance Viggens and Mig21's would have flown on the same side in a cold war gone hot.
    Fun anecdote apparently the Finns tested if it would work to mount an AA-2 Atoll on an AIM-9 sidewinder rail and apparently it worked.
    The Finns had both Mig 21's and Drakens in their air force, Sweden also stored a superfluous of Draken's not in use for a possible quick transfer to Finland in case of hostilities.

    • @SaturnVII
      @SaturnVII 6 лет назад

      I somehow don't think that Finland would actually side with NATO in a Cold War gone hot, unless they were specifically targeted.
      But Finland was subject to Finlandization. It would be like Mexico siding against the US, it's just not reasonable. Now? More plausible. Cold War? I don't think so. That's just my opinion.

    • @puppers2607
      @puppers2607 4 года назад +1

      SaturnVII i agree, finland would probably remain neutral with sweden untill either of them got targeted and if they did the would probably act unanimously and independently from nato since they rely on each other for protection.

    A few things about the landing: you can lower th3 hud so you see the indications better, you could have had a higher aoa, should have put the nose down immediately and shouldnt have flared. All this is because of the viggens wing setup and thrust reverser

    • @SCAJolly
      @SCAJolly 7 лет назад

      and master mode landing for aoa indications

    • @ralfidude
      @ralfidude  7 лет назад +19

      Nah, I like to do visual approaches whenever I can. It makes your flying sharper. I could care less about the HUD. Later on if I'm going to do proper landing procedures, then Il worry about being in the landing mode and all that jazz.

    • @pinguliten
      @pinguliten 7 лет назад +22

      So that means that you do care about the hud then? Since you could care less about it.

    • @toonsis
      @toonsis 7 лет назад

      I have seen the high AOA in how these planes land. Do they thrust reverse every time on every landing or just on short fields ?

    • @Mattebubben
      @Mattebubben 7 лет назад +3

      On long runways when there was no need they usually did not use the Reverser
      (to avoid unnecessary wear to the engine) or if they did use it they might use it for a shorter time
      at a lesser power setting (another way to reduce wear) in the same way Aero breaking is used in other aircraft to reduce break/wheel wear (using the Reverser Aero Breaking would be used on the Viggen for the same reasons).
      But when ever the shortest possible stopping distance was needed or if the weather conditions where poor
      (Ice or Rain on the runway) the Thrust Reverser would ofc be used.
      Just like Drag chutes etc are used in other aircraft they are there when needed but not always used. (though the Thrust reverser was probably used more often then drag chutes are in other aircraft as it had several additional advantages and did not take time to re-pack etc)
      The reason most Video clips of Viggen landings display the Thrust reverser being used
      is that it was one of the Viggens party tricks so its something they always brought out for Air-shows etc.

    Ralfiedude, this might illustrate an American scenario but not a Swedish and the AJS 37 (no hyphen) was never used outside the Swedish Air Force. Regarding some of the technical points, the three green lamps on the cockpit upper left were never all lit at the same time. The vortice from the canard were of cause always there but were not always making the air stream to condense. As this is supposed to illustrate low level, high speed flight, condensation was not probable an if it occurred, the trail over the main wing would not look like this. A good try but a lot remains.

    The Flight Mechanic for the Second Helicopter is wondering: "Where'd all these "BROWN CAMO SMEARS" come from all over this Mi-8?!?!" LOL (in other words the pilot crapped his pants when that heater missed him by that little!... in fact Ralfi i'd be interested to see that missile Flight from the view of the Helicopter as it whizzed by! It looked as if it "SCRAPED THE PAINT OFF THE SIDE"...Actually i'd say you could almost say for certain those were "Beta" missile-flight characteristics, because unless it was just the worlds luckiest miss, that missile looked like it "fell for the Decoy WAY TOO LATE in the missiles flight path to seem legit, but then again the heater's motor WAS still burning when it went for the Flares!.... so it's hard to say for sure!

    • @RaXXha
      @RaXXha 7 лет назад +2

      Well you know, you need to pair it up with adversaries from the same era, then it's probably pretty effective at what it was built to do. :-)

      SecondReversal On the contrary, it was really a pioneer in pilot ergonomics and usability. Note how the flight computer helps with tasks like waypoints, target acquisition and landing without ever being obtrusive or cluttering up the pilot's mind. Everything in the cockpit is logically organized and within reach and the pilot doesn't have anything in front of him that he doesn't need. This airplane is made to fly low and fast and make use of available terrain cover. The Swedish Air Force trains more low-level flying than anyone else, including the British. I read an article about a British Jaguar exchange pilot who was astonished at how his Swedish counterpart could fly the Jaguar faster and lower on the deck than he could. And then he flew the Viggen...

    Its high time Eagle dynamics put flight maintenance and up-keeping of the war craft. Damage to internal parts over the course of time. Changing parts. Flight surfaces and everything, engines, gauges, hydraulics etc. Like A2A simulations. But for war crafts. Its like a dream and it brings a lot of immersion as well.

      I believe it's better than the 21 but you'd have to do some number crunching. It burns 1.2kg/s at mil power, and 8something at zone 3.

    Nice video, the AGM-65 variants on the AJS do they include the IR type instead of standard optical seeker?
    Lots of very satisfying clunks and clicks in the cockpit, looking forward to release.

      @@itsgunter6114in my case, Its my favorite module. I use it the most in multiplayer out of all my planes. Its able to do dangerous missions, mop-up missions with its gun pods and mavericks, able to strike buildings precisely with its rb 05 missiles, able to do dogfighting due to shear power of the engine, easy to setup for a mission, easy to grasp in terms of systems, and a real all round beast. It feels like something from star wars.

      @@sheeplord4976 nice! I was wondering if the Viggin was capable of dogfighting. I picked up the F14 cause I'm am a2a guy but like having duel capacity

    • @sheeplord4976
      @sheeplord4976 5 лет назад

      @@itsgunter6114 the viggens dogfighting is hard to learn, but effective once mastered. The wings rip at high g's, so you need to not overturn at high speeds. The compressor stalls mean you can do quick turns, but only briefly. I use those opportunities to do things like to lock my sidewinder onto someone. I use my sidewinder's indicator as a sort of radar lock to keep track of targets when I am above them. If engaged by anything better than a mig 21, its advisable to hit the deck, drop your load, and go to afterburner stage 3. If escape is unavoidable, fire missiles to drain their speed, and run. As far as I know, the viggen is the fastest plane on the deck in game. If the f 14 is a fighter that can bomb, the viggen is a bomber that can dogfight.

    I've yet to see someone put the anti ship missile to use, tho .
    Are the lights around the radar screen, something like an RWR ?
    Mavericks are pretty much useless at night ? or does it have a FLIR modification (swedish)

    • @theDemong0d
      @theDemong0d 7 лет назад

      Yeah, looks like an RWR. Anti ship missiles are apparently hard to make work, according to Ralfi, so maybe they just didn't want to bother with this video. There are some other videos of them in use elsewhere. If you can carry the AGM-65D it would have an IR seeker and could be used at night, otherwise yeah they'd be pretty useless unless you had illumination flares lighting the target.

    • @ralfidude
      @ralfidude  7 лет назад

      No, anti ship missiles work fine. The 05s are the flare guided ground missiles that are wonky as shit to guide at first.

    • @RaXXha
      @RaXXha 7 лет назад

      The Viggen can't carry the AGM 65D, only the A, so as you say illumination flares would be needed at night. (in other words, bring a wingman carrying those) :P

XD nice plane hope you will enjoy it and that when it is fully relesed that we will see some more videos with it. :) aswell as a shit N giggles cause damn thouse are just redicules. XD continue with the videos your doing a great job with them all. :) hoping DCS will make Saab 35 Draken too but thats probley to much to ask for or even better would be Saab J 29 Tunnan, The dragon and the barrel. XD seens we are so neutral we have never got to use thouse in combat and would be intresting to see how they would have standed up to other fighthers off the same era.
