    They started using the Hobbit Body in late 2006 till early 2008. I talked to a Mattel designer from that time and he told me that they made the bodies shorter & heads bigger to compete with Bratz. If you look at the facesculpt they used for Barbie around that time then you can also notice that the nose is less detailed sculpting wise which is again a sign of competing with Bratz. So funnily enough the marketing behind this 2006-2008 era wasn’t really to make them more youthful but to make them more ‘up to date’ when it comes to the more stylized doll lines like Bratz in the 2000s :D

      Yup, the Bratz comparison also crossed my mind. 😄 I really like the Hobbits, they are very cute and sweet and girly. I will definitely get a few more, really want a Nikki and Raquelle and Summer too.

    Very interesting takes on the Hobbit/Dward era. I've purchased stuff from various era's and not in sequential order. When they popped up I was like huh, why is this one different? I've re-bodied most on mine now.

    It's a pity the mech was not properly functioning on the spinning display but it is a cool idea, kinda like that scene on clueless were Cher can choose her outfits with a virtual paper doll of herself...

      Oh did you find one online? I actually didn't wanna get the playset but it was bundled with another Fashion fever doll who'd have cost me the same even without the Boutique so it was a cute freebie.

    When I was younger (even up until watching this video), I always wondered why these dolls had small petite bodies! Predominately within the Fashion Fever line. Why is it referred to as the ‘hobbit’ ?

    • @dontcallmedoll
      @dontcallmedoll  Год назад +3

      It's a term that started to get used by collectors on message boards and Blogposts to differentiate it from the other Standard 'bellybutton' body of the time. 'Hobbit' was never an official term by Mattel, I think there never was one for this body type like there is for 'curvy', 'petite' or 'tall'. It also shows the era the dolls came out as 'The Lord of the Rings' franchise dominated the early 2000s pop culture zeitgeist similar to how the Marvel Cinematic Universe dominated the late 2010s. So a smaller Barbie ended up being called a 'hobbit'. 😁

    Does anyone know if there was other playsets of these that were released? I recently came across a lot of doll clothes that had cloths on the upper parts of the mannequin. One was a green and pink halter. Thanks!
