Capturing kings is how I first taught my kids to play. When I tried explaining check, it was just frustrating telling them that a move they wanted to make, that seemed to make sense, was illegal. 20:05 "just take the King" -- Damn right!
The way I think of it, the *real* Victory Condition of Chess is: "The game ends when one of the Kings is captured." ("Or when this becomes impossible, for any of a few possible reasons that make it a draw.")
But that never actually happens! Because the rules defining Checkmate, and the ones around Check, make it impossible.
Think how much more *satisfying* it would be if the Checkmated player were allowed to make some final move anyway -- one that's physically possible, i.e., one that would be legal *except* for the requirement to get out of Check -- and then the winner would get to actually, physically, capture the King.
Consider the following proposed rules change: All rules about requiring you to escape Check are either deleted, or at least amended to say "..., if at all possible." The whole concept of Checkmate is then retired, or renamed to "forced resignation", and is made optional.
How does this change the game? NOT AT ALL! That's the point: Every time a game ends in Checkmate, what's "really happening" is, the losing player is resigning one move ahead of the unavoidable capture of their King.
So the rules requiring you to escape Check are logically redundant. Like in this example -- there's no rule explicitly stating that the Kings can't touch, right? No such rule is needed, because it's an *implicit* consequence of the more general rule that you can't move into Check.
Think how much cooler this video would be if Hikaru had simply taken it in stride, picked up his King, and used it to knock over Vidit's King.

    • @isavenewspapers8890
      @isavenewspapers8890 12 часов назад

As you might imagine, this is a pretty common idea. Two hiccups:
      1) Per the rules of chess, castling may not be done if the king would leave, cross, or arrive on a square attacked by an enemy piece. Without the context of the existence of check, this rule would seem a little bizarre. (I suppose one might argue that it seems bizarre as-is, but that's another discussion.) In light of this, you could simply remove the rule without replacing it with anything similar. Alternatively, along with removing it, you could add a new rule that a just-castled king can be captured as if it existed on any of the squares it touched during castling, which would still keep the spirit of the rule. (This might be reminiscent of a certain rule about pawn captures.)
      2) Of course, we need to talk about stalemate, one of the most infamous aspects of chess. Many have called for delivering stalemate to be considered a win. If the opposing player's only option is to put their king in danger, it seems only logical, right? But games are about fun first and foremost, and chess, just like most other board games, takes many leaps in logic for the sake of fun.
Does the inclusion of stalemate being a draw make chess more fun? Well... this is starting to get into the subjective side of things. Personally, I like it: it forces the advantageous player to stay on their toes and earn their win, it gives rise to some beautiful tactics and chess problems, it is the sole thing giving rook and bishop promotions purpose, and it can just be a great source of comedy.
Also, remember when I said that stalemate entails the opposing player's only option being to put their king in danger? Well, that's not actually true. For instance, consider this position:
      White: Ke1
      Black: Kh1, Rg1, Bf1, P(e2, g2, h2)
      Black to play
Black's pieces are totally stuck; Black doesn't have any move options at all, even if they were able to put their own king in check. So if you just purge check, checkmate, and stalemate and say the game ends when the king is captured, there is suddenly no condition to end the game here, and the game hardlocks. You'd have to add another rule specifically governing situations like this. Granted, these kinds of cases are astronomically rare, but they are still part of the game, and you need to account for them.

Also Levy: The kings should be able to touch each other

I agree with what you said in the beginning. No checkmate, just capture the king makes more sense and relies more on someone's ability to see what's going on. Would be especially useful in low-rated games.

When I was like 10 I've always played chess with my mother and my older brother and we actually had the rule that if you miss a check the opponent can just capture the king. But also you always had to say check if you put the other king in check, so this rule mainly applied when someone moved a piece that was pinned
