    If you think of the performance as an art unto itself (which it is!), this is one of the best performances I have ever heard--not of this particular concerto but of ANY piece of music I have ever heard. The performance uplifts the music and only because of this can you begin to see what the music is capable of being. I've heard a number of performances of this piece (as a left-hander!), but this one is special. I come back to this video once or twice a year when I want to be carried away to another world.
    The orchestra is not to be overlooked, either! The symphony orchestra is my personal pick for my favorite invention in human history. While the heart and soul lies in Hélène Tysman's performance at the piano, the combined performance of the entire assembly, with its flawless voicings and many a coy look exchanged between the young but masterful students, to me is the very picture of humanity at its best. The artistic genius of a long-gone composer, channeled through the exquisite marvel of a sprawling symphony orchestra, performed by young masters who don't just sit through a piece of music with dead eyes but actively react to it.
    These twenty minutes are an amazing moment in history, and one can only be amazed that such moments are even possible, and thankful to bear witness to them.

      Yes, yes... I agree wholeheartedly with you - though I get a similar feeling when I hear the beginning of a beautifully played version of Ondine from Ravel's Gaspard de la nuit... In the hopefully unreal situation of being restricted to a single piece of piano music, I would still choose Liszt's B-minor sonata (many great recordings - Andre Watts live 1988, Lazar Berman in Bonn in 1977 and Andre Laplante - to name just three available on RUclips)... But the Samson Francois recording of the Ravel Left Hand Concerto would be smuggled into my luggage too!!

    I have never been able to listen to this piece, since first hearing it in a concert hall in los angeles decades ago, without weeping and shaking within. It is obviously so much more than a musical exercise, more of a spiritual triumph, an intense expression of dignity and courage and expression after loss. Anyone who has ever despaired of life's worth in the aftermath of senseless loss which seems to render it...unliveable...would do well to immerse him or herself in this. And if the execution of it led the original pianist for which it was written to bleed at the knuckles, I really do not think he would have minded, in this almost desperate attempt to reassert the mastery of the instrument in every way possible with limited means...

    • @Bohdanovo
      @Bohdanovo 8 лет назад +6

      +CieTransAtlantique What a great comment stressing the "spiritual struggle" side of this magnificent composition. And I can go further and say that the actual one limb loss and struggle to win some balance again can be regarded here just as a metaphor of something that doesn´t need to be named. It´s one of the deepest and most emotional compositions I´ve known, one of the most shaking "stories" ever told by music.

      +Dave Johnson I would love to hear this played by Helene Grimaud. I think that would be...something on a whole other plane of being, with this material, and her almost otherworldly way of not just playing but being when she performs. But this, too, is clearly a performance where this young artist has simply played without limits which she might otherwise have, by dint of inspiration.

      What a comment! Thanks for saying this! On my side I love to listen to this concerto because for me it's utterly beautiful and when the marvellous Chopin or Debussy pattern starts from around 16:00, it's like beauty triumphs against all the dark, and the beauty goes crescendo until the final victory at the end.
      And when I restart listening to this concerto from the beginning, it's like the first notes fight in the dark before harmony emerges step by step.
      Everyone has his own feelings listening to music, that's also why music is so great..

      Actually it is easier than most people envisage, which is a testament to the composer himself. The chords are perfectly suited for the left hand to seamlessly move from one place to another. @@sheaintmangy why wouldnt the performers be allowed to enjoy the music they're performing? Its quite common to see members of the orchestra listen to the soloist during cadenzas and such, and why shouldn't they? As long as they don't get distracted during their own playing, I think it is fine to listen around when you do not have to play.
      Edit: you can also see other orchestra members do this, including the pianist

    Wonderful playing - fluent, accurate, beautifully shaded, spine-tinglingly atmospheric in the cadenza. Up there, in my book, with the wondrous Samson Francois and a very good Proms performance from Jean-Efflam Bavouzet. She's their equal and enjoys perhaps the best recording of the three and excellent orchestral support. Magnificent.

    In all the glorious constellations of great music, this work has remained at the top of my personal list for more than half a century, and this performance ranks as the best I've ever heard. And how Wittgenstein and Ravel fought over the music's original creation! Yet out of their battle emerged an unparalleled sonic miracle. Everything Ravel composed is exquisite, but this concerto surmounts them all. I was in tears the whole performance. Bravissimo to everyone involved!

    She played this difficult concerto beautifully. However, I noted that her left 3rd finger was bleeding, occurring sometime after the many glissandi she had to do. However, she finished the concerto like a "trooper" knowing that this was a time she had to shine, and she indeed did!
    I've always hated glissandi, because they are murder on a modern grand piano.. for either hand.

    The conductor brought out a great many things in the orchestral part I never noticed before, and they are things which very much deserve to be noticed. My thanks for that. The pianist gave this quite a robust performance and I liked it very much (though I imagine Ravel might have quibbled with the rather frequent use of rubato which is not, of course, indicated the score itself. This did have the effect of making us hear the music somewhat differently by interrupting in some degree it's relentlessness, and I thought the approach worked well with the music). Altogether this was a very fine performance.

    A great performance of a 20th Century masterpiece. Ravel must have been a really great man; he was a pacifist and drove ambulances in the WWI trenches. He wrote this especially for Wittgenstein as an act of true friendship. The opening bars of this work always send a shiver down my spine! The pianist, I presume, came through her exam with flying colours!

      He tried to join the French Air Corps first but was rejected because of his age. They expected you to shoot at the enemy when in an aeroplane. That didn't seem to bother "pacifist" Maurice. He had to settle for ambulance driver.

      @JesseDavis7373 7 лет назад +4

      Actually, Wittgenstein and Ravel were somewhat distant, and never close friends. Especially after W performed the work for Ravel and refused to play it exactly as written, which infuriated R. After hearing W's performance, R commented: "But that is not it at all!"

      @@xYonowaaru Wittgenstein did come around in time. He'd just never encountered a piece structured this way before. He found the piano's early dominance in the introduction to be excessive, like starting a concerto with a cadenza. "if I'd wanted a sonata, I'd have asked for that", or something similar. He rewrote the piece, giving music assigned to the piano to the orchestra, and vice versa. One can see how the composer wasn't amused. It had been written specifically to give the exact impression it delivers to us today. W was from a more corseted musical background in terms of form. He eventually caught on, and played it as written

    Hear, within all the indelible melody, virtuosic technique, the honor given to the survivors, hear the triumph of hope over war. It was supposed to be the war to end all wars, remember. The suffering on the ground is inconceivable to us now. But Ravel used his tools (melody, rhythm, surprise, and storytelling) to give us a memorial. And it's not a museum piece, it's a vital, living experience. One of my favorite works of art anywhere. And this performance is stellar.

    My favorite interpretation of this piece, thanks to the pianist's superb accentuation and intelligent use of various shades of articulation in THE must minute details. Quite unique features, in today's piano-playing.

    I am very glad to have uploaded this recording. The young instrumentalists communicate their inner feelings through their faces. It disintegrated in the original composition has slowed down, weightless units were serious, but it has advantages. Less pattern, more ad hoc motif display can be heard. The viewer, listener better understand the role of the original components.

    Great performance of one of the great concertos. Should be required listening before anyone forms an opinion about war.

    For me, one of the very best performances of this Concerto I have ever experienced. Strength, drama, and pathos. Too , too good to be missed. I'm so thankful I found it at this late date. Bravo! Bravo! Thank goodness for the video.

    I never understood this piece until I watched Leon Fleisher play it when he lost the use of his right hand to focal dystonia.

      If you get a chance, you ought to hear the Robert Casadesus performance with Eugene Ormandy. It's quite breathtaking.
