- Gaming Pastime reviews Heretic for PC.
Developed by Raven Software and published by id Software, Heretic was released for PC in December 1994. Heretic is a fun game that blends fantasy and first-person shooter together. If you enjoy classic Doom, you will most likely enjoy this.

Hexen is the one known for cryptic level design & Hexen 2 for cryptic puzzles. I bought Heretic mail-order from Raven back when it came out. I love it!
That confusing level design is definitely Hexen, not Heretic. Cool video!
Heretic needs a remake like Doom 2016 and Eternal
Instead of this The Dark Ages nonsense
Always loved the feel of heretic
Man, if you hate getting confused and wandering lost for several minutes. You will absolutely despise Hexen 2.
Hexen 2 is a pain in the ass, especially some very confusing puzzles
"Puzzle 1/10th completed"
I prefer Heretic to Doom in some ways.
This is a real hidden gem. Equally as well designed as doom 2 and arguably more atmospheric. Definitely better than doom 1 in my opinion
Played Heretic back in November and enjoyed it overall too. As you said, I think the main problem its the weapon progression, only the Phoenix Rod feels like an upgrade, and the Dragon Claw feels similar to the Hellstaff. The Firemace sucks.
I recommend Hands of Necromancy, more Hexen like, with hubworlds and cool transformations into a snake a Golem a Devil and a Wyvern. Really enjoyed it
I second that emotion! Grew up on Heretic and Hexen, and was involved with map design in both HON games. HON 1 expansion and 2 returns to linear maps, vs hubs!
Heretic may have been 'medieval doom' back in the day, but now we await... Doom: The Dark Ages! ❤
Great review, very nice work.
Regarding the vertical enemies and vertical aiming, I think you had the wrong idea there with all due respect. Of course, play however you need to so you can enjoy it. I'm not gonna be a purist and say shitty things to those that use Freelook in old shooters like Doom or Heretic.
That said, Heretic did not have Freelook until source ports, so it was not designed with it in mind. Auto-aim is certainly less than than reliable on vertical enemies, but the counter to that is your hitscan weaponry. The Dragon Claw is fast but chews through ammo quicker, and it's powered up form is better for crowd control so it's worth saving ammo, especially since the drops are not plentiful or highly replenishing themselves. I did notice a distinct lack of Elven Wand usage in your playthrough here, and I get it, it's basically the counterpart to Doom's pea-shooter which is effectively useless once you get a chaingun. Still, the Elven Wand not only uses it's own ammo, but also is faster than the doom pistol. It's EXCELLENT at taking down gargoyles (the most common vertical enemy in the game) in a handful of shots, ammo is everywhere, and it's powered up form is actually really effective against anything in the game except Maulotaurs.
In short, using the weapons appropriately more or less negates the need to aim vertically, and play it how it was designed. But, again, you do you! Glad you enjoyed a childhood favorite of mine. It is sorely underrated.
I absolutely love Heretic. I've been playing it since childhood. Man, I hope Xbox will allow Nightdive to remaster this game.
You're clearly playing with mouselook and that is a gameplay alteration from the original.
good luck with hexen, hoo boy
Easily one of the childhood game. I'll have ever played and I still play it today. Looking forward of your review of Hexen, Hexen II and Heretic II in couple weeks.
One thing you can see in Heretic ( and other games of the 90s ) is how they choose to look badass and how much effort they put in in order to make it look cool and atmospheric. Look at the Heretic modern clone Wizordum (2023) for example, it looks childish or infantile in comparison, for lack of a better term. In Heretic, even the HUD looks badass, with the faces of what look like two gargoyles, looking mean, with sharp teeth, horns getting out of their skulls and red eyes, all that in a more " adult " art style. All the sprites are well made and look cool. That same attention to form, badass looks and effort in the art style you can see in games like shadow warrior, duke nukem, blood, doom ( of course ), quake ( despite not being 2d ) and many of the games of the 90s, just adapted to their game world. Most of the recent "boomer shooters" lack that aspect, but I consider it really important and for me it really detracts from the experience, or wanting to play the game in the first place. Wish we could get back to that kind of art style, unapologetically badass and less childish ( which was ok even for kids to play in the 90s ).
Hope you give Hexen a try in the future, I myself have never played it, but look forward to it. Also, I saw you made a Socom 1 review, a game that was really popular but almost no one reviews it anymore for some reason, so I also suggest you give Socom 2 a try too, it's a good game despite not having the same challenging and hard missions like Socom 1.
Good point that deserves more attention. These games weren't put together thoughtlessly. Every single element was an informed design decision that furthered the creation of a world. Many people buy games to explore new worlds, and that is exactly where modern gaming fails for the most part - failing to create complelling, immersive worlds.
Hexen is hard, but it's glorious. Worth the play even with the frustration.
"I cannot say" You sound like Data in Star Trek who cannot use contractions
Im a weird one, I like Heretic over Doom. This game teaches you alot of the cheese if the Doom Engine, how to use your map and how items are always valid for regular fights and not just bosses.
I guess my love for Heretic and Hexen over Doom is because Im very burn out on classic Doom.
You don’t know shit about confusing level design until you play strife/Hexen/marathon. Those three games make doom and heretic look like a trip to the fucking zoo
i say drop strife and i double up on rednecks rampage. If you havent played it, think more keys and they are put in random evil places like under a table in a corner or on a shelf and they might as well be camouflaged and tiny.
WTF I JUST SEARCHED THIS - 2HRS AGO IS A CRAZY UPLOAD TIME
I adore DOOM and have played hundreds of hours of WADS.
I've never hated a game as much as Heretic lol. Enemies are just thrown in mindlessly the further into the game you get, and their HP is way too high that it makes clearing rooms a complete chore.
AMID EVIL PLEASE
Hexen is the one to fear.
I think you'd love Amid Evil and its expansion!
Just finished this one recently, it was a nice take on the classic Doom formula with some cool ideas, the 2 bonus episodes were much harder than the first 3.
They were meant as contemporaries to Thy Flesh Consumed & were released later as a patch or in the retail "Shadow of the Serpent Riders" release. Really only the first 3 episodes are important.
@ I like completing all the available official content, still I was disappointed they had no new weapons or enemies
@@NinjaRunningWild Playing through the two additional episodes made me wonder why Doom only added one. Thy Flesh Consumed now feels a bit short (despite the difficulty) compared to Heretic.
@@shuboy05
Doom had the TNT and plutonia.
@ Doom 2 got TNT and Plutonia. I just found it interesting that Doom 1 only got one extra episode.
It seems my patience was thinned by the age. Before I could finish all these games who had mazes in mazes and that all is in maze. Lately I tried to finish BLOOD and Duke3D. I forced myself through BLOOD - and I think those levels are still great. But Duke3D - eh, i don´t think I will finish it.
It is very normal feel like that, as kids and teenagers we had a lot more patience and free time than we do now for sure and who knows maybe age makes us more aware that we're wasting our time with stuff that is not fun and we don't have eternity, we won't live forever right?
@@AJ-po6up Oh man, you totally nailed it! Plus I have now SO MANY games on backlog which are more fun! So I probably will finish those which are fun and this older sort will remain till I will get really bored (or sick/injury which will keep me at home).
How are you getting lost in duke 3D?
Duke is way easier than Blood though
@ It´s more like - I can run in circles for some time until I notice some crack in the wall or previously obscured way. I know those level designs were (and still are) peak for most gamers, which I wholeheartedly agree, but I don´t have time for getting lost.
Which might sound funny, while I still play Daggerfall - yes, GASP! that LABYRINTHIAN game.
But when I´m lost or the dungeon run couldn´t be completed, I just use teleport to target - when I want and when I need.
I didn´t want to use cheat codes in Duke3D or Blood becuse of achievments - and it would ruin the continuity of the game.
But well, that´s all. I know it´s probably not enough for you to be cranky about map design, but that´s my opinion (and can be wrong, without doubt).
I have played heretic 2 and i wish they reboot the franchise with optional first / third person playstyle.
Hey, not really judging, but just curious: is there a reason why you play Heretic with both freelook and (vertical) autoaim on at the same time? I play with freelook, but see no point in leaving autoaim on since you can aim yourself anyway with freelook on. Again, just curious.
I know that Doom and some other Doom engine games were designed with horizontal camera movement and autoaim to shoot vertically, but I prefer using GZDoom, disabling autoaim and turning on freelook to have more control over my targets.
OG Heretic and Amid Evil, that's "where it's at"! 🪄
