    Even when you get a diploma from top conservatories like Juilliard or so, it’s also a very tiny chance that you can take musical performance as your formal career. As a conductor it’s even much harder. There are extremely limited positions available all over the world for young conductors to start their careers.

      3 things to become a conductor. Talent (lots of people have that). Very hard work for years. (Not so many have that). Loads of luck. Very few people have that. Sheer luck, being in the right place at the right moment was how I got into the profession. Many people who were probably as good as me didn't make it.

    I managed conductors for several years. I also have some conducting credits myself. This is all well and good but conductors who get jobs are picked because orchestras think a candidate is capable of building an orchestra. That doesn't happen by committee...it happens through leadership. You will rise in this industry if you can build an audience and a better orchestra.

      1: Are there many conductors in the world? Is their number over 100000? I dont see many probably because my school didn't offer music classes. But my friends and family members who took music classes learned about the piano and violin, so I was wondering how low the number of conductors in the world are.
      2: What is the most difficult thing about being a conductor? Is it finding a job or practicing? Or maybe it's some other thing I didn't think about.
      3: How do conductors practice? Do they practice by conducting an orchestra only? Is there no other way to practice?
      4: Is the number of people aspiring to be conductors decreasing?

      The orchestral conducting program at Juilliard is a graduate-level degree, which means you need to have a bachelor's degree to apply. You are doing all of the right things! Keep studying music and your instrument (or instruments) and developing your skills as an overall musician.

    • @JuilliardSchool
      @JuilliardSchool  7 лет назад +12

      Our conducting program offers either a Master of Music or an Artist Diploma. Our Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) degree isn't specifically in conducting, but is part of the larger music division. Most of the students in our conducting program go on to have very successful conducting careers, so that is the main reason that people choose to attend Juilliard. I think the requirements to teach at a university depend on the organization and position, but generally some kind of advanced degree is required. Here is the link to learn more about conducting at Juilliard: www.juilliard.edu/degrees-programs/music/orchestral-conducting

      OfficialMichellemarie 26 Most university professors will work their way up. Starting at a smaller liberal arts college, building your research or specialization body of work and then gradually moving up as newer jobs open. Insanely competitive. Jobs at the level you’re speaking of are few and far between, but definitely not impossible. Agree with other comments, your reputation matter much more than the degree.
