"Because you were home" remains the most horrifying line of dialog i've heard in a movie. Horror movies always try to come up with creative reasons for why villains are doing what they're doing, but nothing is as horrifying as this. Just a couple of characters that want to kill and go around knocking on doors until someone answers, then they're the victim/s.
after reading this i gotta say I love this reasoning and think it actually made it better (scarier but)
I've always felt the same way about the line!! Not only is this concept 100% something that could happen but it drives home the point of no matter how much good you do or how nice an area you live in, sometimes you'll just be unlucky enough to answer the door and be home when some crazy people come knocking
Dude, I watched this with my mom a few years ago and when they just started banging on the door it was so loud we both deadass screamed like we were getting murdered it scared us so bad
This is also the reason why I prefer that old disney villains be left alone. Don't get me wrong, I liked the Maleficent movies, and I also do like a good backstory/explanation of villains, but I feel nowadays all villains need to have a tragic backstory. I just want to have villains again that are evil "for the evulz"
I personally like for them to have some sort of motive instead of just killing for no reason, but sometimes it can work out such as in this movie. Terrifier 2 also comes to mind but it seems like in the next one there might be a little more going on because there was kind of a cliffhanger at the end... also the clown doesn't talk obviously so it's hard to tell what his motive is lmao.
But also, for example, and I'm prepared for people to disagree with me, but I don't care for the Saw series. I did like the first one because it was a good twist at the end, but the whole concept is actually kind of dumb to me. Teaching people a lesson is one thing... but mutilating themselves or other people to learn the lesson? I just don't get it. I understand why Jigsaw is bitter but I can't understand why people are like "HE HAS A GOOD REASON FOR DOING THIS." Like...sorry but you will never convince me that someone should have to saw their foot off to pay the price for something...lol.
I love how simple the entire concept is but it's terrifying because we can attribute it to reality
Probably inspired by any serious criminals but what came to mind was Manson crime in California
It's a ripoff of a German film "Funny Games" by Michael Hanneke starring Naomi Watts

Yep. To me, this is the scariest movie I've ever seen cause shit like this actually happens.
THIS is what scares me, you can show me ANY psychological horror film and I’ll be fine, but home invasion? NOPE. That’s real, that HAPPENS. That is what scares me
even better is when there is no motive, just a random act of violence. they only killed them b/c they were home.
U should be scared that nobody during ur sleep ends u lol
U should be scared that nobody during ur sleep ends u lol
What I like about this movie is that the villains in this movie just do the things they do just because they felt like it. That kind of motive is my favorite when it comes to slashers like Michael Myers and so on.

@@PatriotJedi Most people could be shot by guns though??? Maybe even all of them? I don't know, we don't have guns in my country lol
This movie genuinely had me terrified cause I’d like to think I’m smart enough to know what to do but you never know till you actually have to go through it 😭
Theyre so unpredictable too so your brain would get so confused and overwhelmed and you probably wouldnt be able to do much of anything
I will say in my opinion the mask removal moment is actually my favourite part of the film (aside from the iconic "is Tamara here" and "because you were home") because that really was just silently signaling like "oh no rest assured you're going to die" moment. Like what do you even do in that moment realizing for certain like welp! this is it, here comes the pain and suffering and death. It's so viscerally frightening.
The true event that inspired it was the writer had a girl show up at his door at like 3am and ask for someone who wasn’t there.
Plus the addition of a handful of break-ins that happened in his neighborhood, as well.
@@zachengel196And the inspiration includes The Manson Murders.

Without seeing their faces they could be anyone. Even your next door neighbor or a relative of yours
THE STRANGERS PREY AT NIGHT IS UNEXPECTEDLY GOOD AS WELL
When he was in the background, standing in the kitchen just watching still gives me chills no matter how many times I watch this film.
"Because you were home" is a line that has stuck with me ever since I've seen this movie. Easily the most chilling part of the movie and I always think about it before opening the door to my house LMAO
LOOOOL
This movie is one of the creepiest movies with the BEST use of diegetic music/sounds and it’s always just… bone chilling. Fun fact - the director would make the crew bang on stuff without letting Liv or Scott know it was coming in order to get the most authentic reactions out of both of them.
The most terrifying thing is feeling isolated while 3 people are after you and want you dead and this movie played with this feeling in a good and scary way
And even worse want you dead just because you were home
"because you were home" gives me chills everytime
The true stories this movie was based on:
The Manson Murders, more specifically Sharon Tate's.
And the director (Bryan Bertino), had an experience as a kid when his parents were out for the night, and someone knocked on his door. His little sister answered, they asked for someone that doesn't live there, and then left. Apparently finding out later that these were the people responsible for multiple break-ins in his neighborhood at the time.
Some people also compare the events of the movie to the Keddie Cabin Murders, though the director did not cite this as an inspiration.
@ItsKarlDude No. The director said his inspiration was the book 'Helter Skelter' about the Manson family murders. He also said it was inspired by events that happened when he was a kid in his "middle of nowhere" neighborhood where burglars were knocking on people's doors, if nobody was home, they'd break in, if someone answered the door, they'd ask "is x home" then walk away. I think he's changed up that story at times though, going from that to it just being an urban legend he heard. There was also a French-Romanian film called 'Them' released 2 years prior that has the exact same premise. I personally believe Strangers was just a Hollywood/english adaptation of that film.
I watched this movie years and years ago, and it remains one of the few horror movies that’s truly stuck with me. I hated how real it felt, and I’ve never been able to forget the “because you were home” line 😅
Also, what might have made that line so memorable and disturbing was the strangers didn't really much at all. They only said about 3 lines during the whole movie.
I’m genuinely the worst human because I LOVE horror movies but I literally hate when they actually scare me 😂 this movie scared me so bad as a kiddo
SPOILER SPOILER
Even though I don’t love this movie, I really appreciate the acting where he’s legitimately traumatized by his friends death. I think most horror movies would’ve just gone through the motions and not really showed that side to his character.
The music analysis at 13:37 where you determined it wasn’t inspirational corporate music but jolly good times on the ranch while maintaining a grimace actually had me giggling
i think you’d really like the film “hush.” it’s definitely less subtle than this one but it has a similar premise, and really taps into that fear of being watched. it’s also a nightmare scenario for any woman who lives alone👀
this was my favorite horror movie as a kid its genuinely terrifying
Truly, as an America's Most Wanted and Unsolved Mysteries kid this was one of the only horror movies that scared me. Even SAW was too fanciful for me 😂
whoa, first i was like “wdym as a kid?” and then realized this movie is 16 years old and i was 11 myself lmao
Whats so cool a out this particular movie is that the strangers don’t really have that much power over them, other than being super sneaky. Like i genuinely think that if the couple went straight at one of them with the kitchen knives they could actually kill them one by one. But the real disadvantage is that they have no idea what they have or how they behave or even how many there are. And that they’re complete strangers doing something that just doesn’t make sense, and that’s what’s terrifying.
My husband thinks home invasion movies are lame because “he would know what to do”. When I’m reality, we’d both be crying in a corner. This movie concept has always scared me more than anything, lol.
😂
lol, I think that's a typical guy response. My husband is the same, blustering about ohhh, they wouldn't know what hit 'em, that's why we are packing heat! But in reality, neither of us would actually be that confident as it is happening.
she should react hush if she hasn't yet it's another wild home invasion movie
@@b-rorptop1035Hush is great, not as bleak as The Strangers though.
@@lizthedisjointedzebra692actually, generally speaking, the male brain is hard-wired to have confidence in these exact kinds of situations. so, it's more likely that you're just projecting your femininity onto him.
Watched this movie on Halloween night circa 2008. As a 14 year old who BARELY got into horror at that time, it was one of the scariest experiences I’ve ever seen. Surround sound and a dark apartment living room really can be immersive. 😨👀
I love this movie, and I also love these "silent" jumpscares where there's no sound cue and something just happens in the background and you feel like your heart is dropping when you spot it. The movie is great at creating tension, and I think they put a few traditional jumpscares in there to make it watchable, to release the tension, because honestly if it was just tension building and building and building, waiting for a jumpscare that never comes, I think this movie would be literally panic attack inducing ksjdhfksd A great example is when the woman is caught and we almost feel relieved, not because it's not scary, but just because the tension of the hiding and chasing is sooooo much more horrifying
I also really like that they don't really show the faces. At first I was so frustrated, but then I noticed it didn't matter, because it wasn't anyone they knew, no one they could recognize from their past, no one seeking revenge, no one they could reason with. They were just people. And that's terrifying. I love me some good old slasher to remind us that the scariest monsters in existence are people. Not some spirits or zombies or monsters. Just a couple of guys.
And please watch the squel the strangers: prey at night!
Her looking for a explanation the whole time is the best part of the whole movie😭😭🤣 that’s what made the movie good that one line “because you were home.” Love this movie
Home invasion movies ALWAYS get me omg the anxiety they give me is crazy 😂
This movie has always stood out to me because it is scarily real. The entire justification is we’re doing this because we can, we want to hurt you and you can’t stop us.
The audio in this film is so great too.. so perfect and scary for this film
"Benjamin Franklin circa 1752"
You ever have a laugh surprise you so hard you start choking?
This was definitely a favorite when I was a kid. I had it on DVD, and fun thing about it: in the making of the movie you could see that the director would tell the killers to make noises randomly almost all the time during the movie, so that the couple's reactions and jumpscares looked more real, since they weren't expecting it.
I’m literally obsessed with this film such a good film I’ve watched it many times can’t get enough of it
This movie scared the Hell out of me. Especially when the guy just walks in the room when she's in the kitchen. They definitely wanted to mess with them first. They liked them afraid. It has a very Helter Skelter Manson family vibe.
Jesus the chills this movie gives me is unfathomable
This is one of the movies to watch only 1 time and go into it without having any idea about it
This remains one of the best executed horror movies I’ve ever watched. No matter how many times I watch it I still have similar reactions that you had of not wanting to look. The director did such a phenomenal job with the palpable atmosphere he created.
the second one, prey at night, is less scary and more campy but still a really fun time! the soundtrack and lighting are so good, the concept is good, and the characters are a little more capable. i love both movies; i can watch this one if i want some serious creepy vibes and i can watch the second one if i want more neon lights.
i was losing it when you said you couldn’t figure out their motive, it’s so funny seeing people try to figure out a motive that really isn’t even there 😂
This film really affects me in a visceral way. It is terrifying and so possible as well.
Ok this has to be the scariest movie I’ve watched with you Caitlin, this made my hands sweat so bad, and everytime I hear a noise in the house, It just makes me want to scream and cry 😂😭
So I know this unrated version only has the one extra scene, but I like it better when it cuts to the boys, without seeing her crawl to the phone.
That's insane. I only saw this movie once when it came out in theaters, and I knew that scene wasn't in the theatrical cut. It makes zero sense to have that scene in the movie at all.
@@ItDoesntMatterReallyI mean it does kinda because she wasn’t able to get to the on home because the man stopped her so it was like one last ditch effort to survive
Bro, this movie is one of my favorite horror and home invasion films. It's crazy how this whole mystery behind the strangers is never explained and that's what makes it good and interesting. The final scene with the three of them framed together and the response of “Because you were home” is too bizarre!
Till this date, I have seen many horror movies / scary films. And yet this one still is in my top 5. No hesitation. It gives a reality feeling of what could / has happened to people before and even probably in future. The ambiance / aura of the creepy-ness is just genius by the director. Amazing how a basic film with not a ‘high’ budget can be one of the scariest films I have seen. (Again, I’m judging off the ‘horror’ not blood / villain look.)
i was so tense watching this with you but then the tier list popping up in the middle of the video helped me release all that tension because it was so unexpected i just burst out laughing hskfdks thank you caitlin your editing is a gem
Also the ads, they were helpful
i remember going to see this in theatres when it came out. i was a senior in high school and staying at my parents house completely alone for a couple weeks and i was on HIGH ALERT the entire time.
truly one of my favorite scary movies. so real. so frightening.
i will forever love the cinematography of this movie
The part where the leader stands in the dark hallway and you can barely see him is terrifying 😮
I think you would love THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE. Its based on a true story and is from the same director as Sinister and The Black Phone.
This is definitely one of the scariest movies I had ever seen also. Home invasion movies just hit different.😅
Will you be reacting to the Strangers 2? I liked it equally if not more than this one! ❤
This movie was loosely based on the Manson murders during the late-60s and early-70s. As well as a creepy experience the director had, a woman knocked on his door in the middle of the night asking for someone who didn't live there.
Also, I just love the shot of the Man in the Mask standing in the dark hallway while Liv is in the kitchen. No typical stinger to scare the audience, just his presence alone is enough to enduce a scare. As well as my fear of someone invading my one safe place.
Saw this in theaters when it first came out, and never saw it again until about a week ago, and even before I rewatched it it was one of my favs. Rewatching it really solidified that. Such a great movie. People call it boring, but to me they just have trouble putting themselves in the shoes of the victims. Because if you do that, this movie is probably one of the scariest ever. At least for me. They have no reasons and no intentions but to scare and kill these innocent victims. Absolutely bone chilling
This remains the scariest film ive seen and I never get scared of films, it's the fact that it could happen to any of us and HAS happened to people before. I couldn't sleep after watching this lol.
I think this probably stems from a criminal trick where someone is looking to break in to a house and see no lights on, so they knock the door to see if anyone answers, if they answer the question "is x home?" Is a reson to be knocking on your door so they can walk away no questions asked. Definitely one of the scariest movies I've seen over the years. I agree with you about the clown epidemic, we had it here in the UK too. Another good film is Eden Lake, well worth a react, great reaction 👍
Though I love horror movies , THIS movie jolted me mentally for days for the exact reasons you stated. Nothing supernatural but it’s “ so real “, and yes it’s so ODD and makes no reason of killing just like our nightmares .
Btw , this movie based on true events !!
Great reaction . Lock your doors ! lol
I was literally rewatching your The Conjuring reaction 😂 didn’t know you were posting today!
Another major rule to go by when you watch a horror movie is expect the unexpected characters that you might consider weak are actually the strongest
You might enjoy Hush (2016). It has a similar concept with a killer trying to break into the home of a deaf woman.
"Funny Games" is a psychological thriller film that was directed by Michael Haneke. It was first released in 1997 in Austria, and a shot-for-shot American remake, also directed by Haneke, was released in 2007. The film tells the story of two young men who hold a family hostage and torture them with sadistic games. Despite its title, "Funny Games" is notorious for its disturbing content and themes of violence, creating a tense and chilling atmosphere. It's considered a critique of media violence and the nature of spectatorship.
Michael haneke is an amazing filmmaker
Every movie he makes feels so real even though they're not everyday type of movies
Your reactions are never boring. I love them.👍
i love horror movies and this one absolutely scared the HECK out of me ! no ghost, monster, freddy or jason type character. just three ppl who terrorized & kill a couple. simply bc they were home.
This movie was based on home invasions based on the directors neighborhood when he was a child, Charles Manson and his crew and the Keddie cabin murders. This also goes to show even if you weren’t alone, it wouldn’t matter because you would be screwed with people playing you like a chess board and eventually saying check mate. The killers are even more cruel when you think about it leaving Kristen alive after the traumatic event, meaning they purposely gave her wounds that would hurt but she would live from. Honestly wish i would of seen Kristen in two for revenge or something lol
Edit: mmmmm I didn’t think about this but I’m pretty sure they left her alive to tell their story, to make people fear that these people are around and you might be their next victim or they just like playing games. Either one or both lol
Stoked for you to see this one!! Gave me a whole new appreciation for "slow-burn" horror as a 14yr old. The amount of dread from enduring the phycological torture of just being fucked around with along with Kristen & James as a viewer is remarkable. A masterclass of lighting & angle usage as well, does the most by doing very little.. at first. The subtleties in all aspects of the movie are so fun to look at back and notice.
Also gave us one of the best horror tag lines & great front-door Halloween decorations for eternity :)
I would like to point out that I LOVE horror movies and it’s my favorite genre, but this movie was actually the first one I ever saw and I was like 14-15 and I remember LOSING MY MIND. My friend and I watched it at like 2am and had to pause it for 10 minutes because we were terrified and needed a break to walk around and make sure the house was locked up. And I will forever be traumatized even though it’s been over 10 years 😭
Dollface's "Because you were home..." Perfection!!!
There is nothing like the moment /watching this in theaters/ when everyone - me included - noticed scarecrow standing in the back of the kitchen scene /at different moments/ and you could hear their realizations and feel the tension rise in the theater. This movie was so scary, my mom denies having ever seen it with us to this day. Absolute masterclass.
This is the best example of a horror movie. No monsters. No cgi. Just real monsters. Serial killers. With real dialogue. And a slow build up to the horror.
This film burned itself in my brain when I was a kid lmao. I remember just staring at my ceiling after watching it 💀
I watch a lottt of movie reactions, but I especially love yours! Feels like we're actually watching it with you. Pls keep reacting:)
thank you so much!
"The Strangers" is one of the few horror movies I have watched that actually physically scared me.
I’m sure it’s been suggested before, but I highly recommend It Follows if you haven’t seen it already. Cool storyline and not too much gore (only one quick scene if I remember correctly) so I think you would enjoy. Also, the soundtrack/score alone is worth the price of admission. I love your channel; it’s so my jam.
This movie scared me so bad as a kid but have no recollection of.
But after coming back years later, this movie scared me even more.
That one line: "Becuase you were home."
I never knew why they said that, but now I'm traumatized.
They just did it because they wanted to...
Definitely the scariest scenario to be in.
Just this past Friday I recommended this to a guy at work as the scariest film I've ever seen when he mentioned he only liked realistic horror vs supernatural. I saw this as an adult and wound up having to turn the lights on because of how much it got under my skin. Love the stream of consciousness way you do these reactions.
How easily something like this could happen in real life. It does happen. That's what's so scary about this movie. Home invasion, stalking, these things happen every single day. And sometimes for no reason whatsoever. The victims didn't do anything, it wasn't personal. Just because. "Because you were home." Terrifying line.
Love this movie. I was too young for anyone to take me to see this in theaters but my mom always told the story of how my cousin(who’s a muscle dude haha) screamed in the theatre when the mask guy was behind the curtain
Also I don’t know if anyone mentioned this but I guess when they say “Inspire by true events” in this case they basically mean “this kind of shit really happens”
Prey at Night is great too
Great reaction as usual. I remember you asked for found footage suggestions, so I'm going to suggest this again cause it's just such a good movie: "Hell House LLC", a slow burn start and it gets VERY scary! Hope you choose it and excited to see your reaction for it!
LOVE Dennis from It’s Always Sunny playing the friend who gets shot 🤣🤣
You really need to see the sequel to this film imo I liked the first one the best, but the second one still needs be seen, added bonus they filmed the second one in my home town and or state I guess I should say idk Cincinnati is shown in the beginning, but yeah check out the sequel. I'm genuinely interested which one you'll end up a fan of more the first or second.
P.s. I saw this movie in theaters when it came out with my sister and few friends oh boy that was an experience! 😅
The strangers was honestly my childhood, I loved horror films since I was six and I still do now and I'm 14!!!
This is my all time favorite horror movie. I can’t watch this with headphones on without facing the front door. It’s also why I lock my door and never open it for strangers unless I’m expecting something. Also never answer the door after a certain time. Home invasion horror movies freak me out the most because of how real they are. I can paranormal, demon movies all day and be fine.
This and It (1990) are the ones that scarred me as a child. I remember after the first few minutes of this, I would close my eyes and plug my ears until it was all over lol.
"Tell me how you have a flashlight and you're still tripping on shit" 😂😅
This will forever be the movie I struggle with. It's too calm and subtle and "normal". Like you said, it's nightmare fuel!!
I also believe it was inspired by the Manson murders. How they would just show up at people's houses randomly and inflict insane amounts of violence.
Bailee Madison does a fantastic job in the sequel Strangers: Prey at Night. Now that you’ve seen this one you have to watch the sequel next 🤷🏼♀️
Yup she was so good in that film!
Now that one was fucked up, but it's so damn good bc of the music 😭😭
Loved your reaction. I'm glad no one knocked on your front door while watching this. I'm sure you would have hit the ceiling.
This is one of my all time favorite horror movies my mom introduced me to this movie and it always scares the poo out of me every time she’s hiding in the closet.
This movie incorporates silence better than any film I've ever watched. It's true silence oppose to most movies that still have some ambient sounds.
The Strangers remains the scariest movie I've watched and I've seen pretty much all of them from the 80's-2010's. I saw this movie high and in the dark and it scared the faaaaaaaaaaaaark out of me.
Caitlin, it's always a pleasure watching scary movies with you. You're starting to watch some that I have seen. Thank you for that. There is a Strangers 2 Prey at Night and a third is upcoming but not sure when. This is my favorite kind of scary movie. I like the jump scares, but I agree it would have been a great movie without them. I love the slow tension building to something happening. Neither you nor the character knows what is going to happen. That's so delicious. The two main actors are amazing. You don't really get to see their true potential in movies like these, but it's great to see they can do horror as well as comedy or love or action roles as well. I would like to request that you sing in every reaction. Please, you have a beautiful voice. You also look amazing as always. I like the new ear pods as well. Oh, and happy belated 4th!
I rented this movie back in 2009 and watched it alone at night. Then I had to go to work my night shift job at a residence home out in the country. I love this movie because it was actually able to scare me. I respect a horror movie that can scare me, because so many don't. But stuff like this, home invasion stuff that can really happen, scares the pants off me.
I watch alot of horror reactions being a fan. However, you miss are by far incomparable. You are real haha. This channel will boom of you keep this up.
Also glad you finally watched this one. Myself and two mates agree it's the scariest we have seen, simply because " this could really happen to someone ".
I was today years old when I found out Dennis from it’s always sunny is in this movie! Lmao
this movie shook me to my core when I first watched it it's so effective I cannot take anyone seriously that says the sequel was better the sequel is decent but it doesn't even come close to how good this movie is
This was one of those people having panic attacks and passing out in the theater movies. Really was one of the scariest movies ever to a lot of people.
Fun fact: there’s a Strangers reboot trilogy currently being made! They’re making them back to back.
Reboots no one asked for lol I hate modern movies, nothing but regurgitated ideas
They need to make Strangers: In da Hood 💯
Chapter 1 is basically a remake, but not a good one.
This should have never been a franchise
The record that kept replaying gives chills knowing they’re not gonna stop until you’re dead. 😳
On vacation for the 4th of July? She’s scared upload? Coffee and a giant choco chip cookie? This is a good morning so far
Omg. I saw this in my front page, and got chills clicking on it. This movie is terrifying. Can't wait to see your reaction!
There are very few movies that actually scare me to this day. I've been watching horror movies since I was a kid. I'm in my 30s. This one absolutely terrified me, because it's something that happens. People do this crap.
When I was in my teens, I used to watch this movie every Wednesday night. Don't know why that night particularly but I got so I knew the script word for word lol Must have seen this movie about 40 times haha
“You’re Next”. That’s a fun one and the same genre as this, home invasion.
So this halloween, instead of "Trick or Treat" we can just say "Is Tamara here?"
