    Fun fact, in the dvd release of the Ring, if you pressed up with the controller in the dvd menu enough times that the cursor disappeared then pressed enter, the full cursed video would play in it's entirety. It could not be paused, skipped or fast forwarded and at the end the audio would play a phone ringing two times.

    The girl can kill with a thought. She terrorized the horses and made them kill themselves. When she kills Noah at the end she just looks at him and wishes him dead. She's a malevolent, super-telekinetic killing machine. The original Japanese series of (four) films explains it more fully.

  • @thegoldbussy
    @thegoldbussy 11 месяцев назад +221

    Just wanna clarify something. When they discover Samara's room in the barn and Noah says 'not alone' he's referring to the horses. Samara killed the horses because they 'kept her up at night' but that's the lie she told the doctors at the facility. She really killed the horses because Anna worked with them very closely and loved them. In her eyes, they came between her and her mother. In the tape Rachel watches at the Morgan ranch you can see the camera in Samara's room showcasing that she never sleeps. It all ties back into the horses. She drove the horses mad because they kept her up at night, but she never sleeps. Samara's true nature is sprinkled throughout the movie, and it's so well done. She's an evil little girl. She lied, and then manipulates Rachel and Noah to set her free.

    • @dontreadmyprofilepicture8817
      @dontreadmyprofilepicture8817 10 месяцев назад +36

      Yeah this is what most people don't understand, I always see people say Samara was innocent, but she literally wasn't and she herself admits it in the recording, "You don't wanna hurt people. *But I do and I'm sorry."* she burns horrible things into peoples minds and kills unprovoked, she's chaotic evil. The original Japanese story Sadako (Samara) is actually more on the innocent side before becoming an onryo of pure hate, but in this version Samara is just evil right off the bat.

    • @thehorrorarchive
      @thehorrorarchive 10 месяцев назад +5

      Sadako never had this issue until Ring 0: Birthday (2000), but it’s handled much better, treated as a split personality or “second” Sadako. This is ultimately why some of the Japanese Ring movies are better, 5 of them also predate the silly American remake so yeah

    • @thegoldbussy
      @thegoldbussy 10 месяцев назад +9

      @@thehorrorarchive Sadako is definitely the better written character. Her story and character are just portrayed in a much more compelling way than Samara. Until Ringu:0 her true nature had never been directly spelled out, meaning viewers would all draw their own conclusions on whether or not Sadako was truly evil or driven to evil by her parents actions. Sadako is also pretty chilling because she's legit only on screen for a couple minutes in Ringu. Samara constantly appears throughout The Ring. Hearing her speak and seeing her throughout the movie kinda made the ending of the film fall a little flat. She just looked like a zombie, and there was nothing surprising about it.

    This was the first horror movie that I ever watched. It was a night in 2003 when I was 6 years old. It was about to be broadcast on TV cable 📺. My brother and sister prepared everything to watch it; they moved the couch 🛋️, prepared the popcorn 🍿, turned off the lights, and I could see that they were so excited about it that I begged my mom to let me watch it. When she finally let me, I ran and sat down between them 👨👧👩 and watched the whole thing. That experience was the beginning of my love for horror movies and also the beginning of my fear of the dark, the kind that makes you run when you turn off the light. As expected, my brothers pranked me a lot afterwards, especially by leaving me alone in a dark room and screaming that Samara was coming for me. Bastards!

    This is my favorite horror movie of all time. I really love how it's filmed: the editing, directing and sound design always stand out to me. And the way they shot Samara's video will ALWAYS creep me out. No jump scares, just awful and disturbing imagery. It's great!

    The thing I like about the '98 Japanese movie (as there are several adaptations of the novel) and this remake is that both emphasize this idea of a family that isn't "meant to be," or doomed, which ofc is a favorite in horror. There's obvious parallels between Rachel's family and Samara's, right down to a child with psychic powers. This definitely is my favorite version tho. Gore Verbinski and crew really nailed that cold aesthetic with that greenish tint that haunts the whole movie, not to mention helping shift trends away from the dwindling slasher genre over to supernatural horror in mainstream for awhile.

    The Ring was my first horror movie (I was 16 and had been avoiding scary for a long time, but I was in a mood). A friend had invited me to come babysit a mansion for friends with her. In the woods. In a thunder storm. With TVs in every room and a cable system so complicated that we couldn’t figure out how to get anything but snow. And horses and mirrors and their dog barking at nothing. We also got a phone call with no one on the other end after watching. It was awful. I didn’t watch another horror movie for years.

    A lot of the ghost/haunting elements derive from Japanese ghost stories and how hauntings work in their culture which doesn’t always translate well to a Western audience. It’s not until I watched a lot more Japanese horror and films like the grudge that it made more sense. All I know is Samara scared the crap outta me as a kid and she still does to this day. A tv with static is one of the creepiest things to me now.

    Naomi Watts absolutely eats in this role, her devastation when Aiden watches the tape is so palpable! This is still my favorite horror movie to date, with the cinematography, blue/green color-grading, the musical score! I love every bit of it. Also, the moment where we see Rachel’s niece curled up dead in the closet is still the scariest jump-scare I’ve ever seen in my life😂 incredible haha
    edit: for some clarification, Samara is very much an evil demon child🤣 the film plays on the idea of “thoughtography” or a type of psychic image making where the “artist” (for lack of better terms lol) burns images onto film that they originally had seen or imagined. Samara has this supernatural ability, which is why the doctors in the mental hospital videos were asking her how she created those images, and she said she just “does”. The way I see it, her “soul” or being remained down in that well for however many years after she died, and once those cabins were built over the well and her family’s land, she was able to burn a whole cursed video tape onto that VHS, doing so using psychic image-making that we’ve already seen her do when she was under evaluation, and she probably made the evil tape using the TV in cabin 12 directly above where her soul was trapped down in the well😂 From there, her viral video went into circulation.

In the dream I loved the dog, a greyhound (even thoguh I've never had one but in the dream I love it!). Then exactly the same thing that happened to the horse happened to the dog; we were on a ferry, dog got spooked & jumped over board, got sucked into the engines, blood in the water. It's actually very likely that she could easily find the lighthouse. They aren't common, and she looked locally.
    You're looking at everything backwards. It didn't happen because of the kids.
    Everything was local, or very close geographically. Including Rachel and her niece, who just happened to have the bad luck to stumble into the spot near where the tape was ; at the cabin campground , near the Morgan ranch.

    • @OBrasilo
      @OBrasilo 2 месяца назад +1

      The lighthouse thing is one the thing this movie *did* do better than the 1998 one, because it's actually closer to the novel. Rachel finding the lighthouse in a book called "Lighthouses of America" directly parallels Kazuyuki Asakawa finding the volcano from the novel's tape in a book called "Volcanoes of Japan". I actually love that Verbinski and Kruger did that.

    Glad you finally got around to watching this!
    So, I remember seeing a preview for this movie, when I went to see a different movie (don't remember which one), back in 2002. All it was was a very normal-looking shot of that small island community, and Rachel saying "Before you die....you see the ring..."
    That was the only preview I ever saw for the movie, and it gave nothing away. I didn't even think much about it, after I left the theater.
    Flash-forward to....whenever it came out on DVD. I had seen it on the shelves, at Best Buy, and got it, because the cover looked interesting (I didn't look at the back cover). A couple days later, my mom went out shopping, and I was by myself in the house. I had nothing else to do, so I popped in the DVD (still not knowing anything about the movie).
    When it was over, I went upstairs, and unplugged the CRT TV/VCR combo that was in my room 😅.
    Next up, you should watch "The Grudge".
