Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) is a Hindu denomination within the Swaminarayan Sampradaya. BAPS, following the Swaminarayan tradition, particularly among Gujarati Hindus, is known for its distinct theological beliefs, leadership structure, and focus on the teachings of Bhagwan Swaminarayan. Rooted in Hinduism, BAPS embodies its enduring values, spiritual practices, and profound wisdom. BAPS has a global presence, with over 1700 temples spanning across countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Kenya, Uganda, South Africa, New Zealand, United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Malaysia, and more.
Bhagwan Swaminarayan, born Ghanshyam Pande in 1781 in Uttar Pradesh, renounced worldly life at age 11, embarking on a spiritual journey across India. He established the Swaminarayan Sampraday, advocating worship of God as Narayana (Vishnu), adherence to Hindu scriptures, and moral integrity. His teachings, emphasizing devotion, humility, and service, are preserved in texts like the Vachanamrut and Shikshapatri. Followers revere him as an incarnation of God who fostered devotion and established dharma. Bhagwan Swaminarayan passed away in 1830, aged 49, appointing spiritual leaders to continue his mission. BAPS, founded in 1907 by His Holiness Shastriji Maharaj, emphasizes the Guru Parampara, a lineage of spiritual leaders tracing back to Bhagwan Swaminarayan. The current spiritual leader is Mahant Swami Maharaj, with the International Headquarters located in Ahmedabad.
In the Swaminarayan tradition, while acknowledging the Trimurti, deities like Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva are seen as manifestations of the supreme God rather than independent entities. Unlike mainstream Hinduism, BAPS elevates Swaminarayan above other gods. Its scriptures include the Vachanamrut and Swaminarayan Bhagavad Gita. Swaminarayan temples feature idols of both gods and goddesses alongside Swaminarayan, and adhere to Hindu customs, rituals, and festivals such as Diwali, Janmashtami, and Holi with great devotion. BAPS is renowned for its broad social and charitable initiatives, including hospitals, schools, and global humanitarian projects.
