Alfred High School, Rajkot holds an important place in history. The school was originally established in 1853 as Rajkot English School with 36 students during the British rule. The present buildings of the school were constructed in 1907 by the then Nawab of Junagadh in memory of Duke Alfred. Named Alfred High School. The greatness of this school is that Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, who became Mahatma Gandhi, studied here for seven years from 1880 to 1887. It was here that Gandhi went from being an average student to excelling in various subjects including English. Despite the challenges of marriage at the age of thirteen and family responsibilities, Gandhi completed his education as a good student. In his matriculation year at the age of eighteen, Gandhiji was one of only two students out of 38 to pass the high school entrance examination. Gandhiji, who became a global leader in India's freedom struggle, had an important part of his education and character formation in his association with this school of history
39 rooms of this school have been reconstructed as galleries. There are 18 galleries on the ground floor and 21 on the upper floor. Each describes a different aspect of Gandhiji's journey from "Mohandas" to "Mahatma". Each air-conditioned gallery has museum guides to explain everything in detail. The galleries are equipped with modern technology including models built with censoring techniques, projectors, touch screen kiosks with headphones, 3D models and different lightings to highlight Gandhiji's philosophies of truth and non-violence.
The museum presents exhibits reflecting Gandhiji's struggles, teachings and his unwavering commitment to India's freedom struggle. It serves as a place of inspiration, reflection and knowledge for people of all ages. Gandhiji's legacy of emphasizing the power of simplicity, compassion and social change continues to inspire generations through this museum. The evening light and sound show here is a regular attraction for all age groups alike
