Tamiya Hornet Speed Test and Beach Bash. Classic RC buggy. 3421kv Brushless, 2s lipo

  • Hi all. I was asked how fast my brushless Tamiya Hornet is and I just had to go and find out. This has a 3421kv Absima Thrust brushless set and a 4000mah lipo battery. It was rather difficult to get this up to top speed with the lack of traction and general rubbish handling but I managed eventually.
    Thanks to Damian at Dusty Fingers RC for the top tip about adding oil shocks to the front of this. These Grasshopper 2 A arms are a bit wider than the stock ones so you need to make longer steering rods too which he also covers in his video • Tamiya Grasshopper Upg...
    As ever thank you for watching. Please like and comment :-)

      Hiya Nick. Oh yes I was very much relying on momentum and gunning the throttle to get it through that soft sand. As I was saying in the vid the motor combo is probably too much for the abilities of this but fun to try and make it go fast. Many thanks indeed for watching and your great comments my friend. Oh Pete, that poor Hornet! Boy you really bashed the heck out of it in this one! Looked like a ton of fun though! Good speed in the end, I reckon a couple more mph if you could have kept it straighter for longer. So a few slams into a massive pile of gravel and good thrashing in the soft sand and then a dunk in the sea, you sure proved how tough this little buggy is! loved the humour - can it.. NO! Great to see a midweek upload from you mate, have a great evening and all the best from Mark... :O)

      Hiya mate. Well yes I gave it a bit of a hard time on that gravel pile. Probably won't be a new challenge series as it was horrible dusty gravel. With the speed test I did a load more runs across the car park without the camera and I think I did get it to top speed. Really uncontrollable though so I'll be interested to see how it is if I go brushed. I'm being a bit lazy with getting videos done so thought I'd put this up as soon as it was finished rather than wait until Friday. Thanks as ever for your great comments. Best wishes to you too 😁👍

    Hi there Pete, oh boy! I’ve not seen a Hornet go so fast! 😊. Going to name that one The Mad Hornet 😊. So much power, the poor little tike, almost had its wheels driven off. Still, 27mph for this little icon is very respectable! It took all your skills and attention to keep it going in a straight line. I had a Hornet back in the day, it got upgraded to the Technigold motor, and I thought that was quick, mind you, had no idea how fast back then, I did try to speed test it with me driving my first car and my baby brother driving the Hornet, and yes, you guest it, he got confused with left & right as the car coming towards him and well….crushed and destroyed, my fault I suppose. I was so upset! 😊😁😉anyway, great video, love the red colour too. Take care and best wishes to you and the family 😊😁😉

    I wonder pete if by removing the friction part in the front suspension, you know that little rubber tube that fits around the spring shaft if that might make the front suspension movement more plush without the stiction. That was the problem with mine and i only used a 25 turn core RC motor and 2s lipo. It constantly was tipping over and crashing and rolling over. So damned annoying.then i put the same motor in a new Nova Fox and mate that car handles beautifully.ive never crashed it one time nor rolled it onto the roof. But after the Hornet i tried the Nova Fox on cement only a couple of times then said ok thats fast enough and then went onto a football field with grass. Plus the fox is wider at the front and rear and weighs around 270 grams heavier. Tamiya claim 874 grams for a Hornet and 1140 grams for a Fox , both without battery and radio gear. You got some really high speed there mate.after crashing so many times i said enough is enough and firstly returnedc the stock standard silver can motor to the Hornet then put it on a shelf. Having said that it drive so much nicer with the slower motor. Just pretty slowly. Great work again Pete thankyou 👍👌

    • @PeteWylieRC
      @PeteWylieRC  8 месяцев назад

      Hi there. Yeah when this had the stock suspension I did leave the rubber bit out because it would only take a bit of dirt to clog it up. I've got the oil shocks on this now and it does make it better but the handling of the Hornet is never going to be fantastic because of the way the rear suspension works. Yeah in the end I put a brushed motor in this one as the handling just isn't really up to brushless. It does work great as an RC of it's time but like you say there are others that handle much better. Many thanks indeed for your great comments. Much appreciated 😁👍

    Mate I'm from Melbourne Australia, I get a higher speed on my rerelease Tamiya Super Hot Shot with a brushed Super stock RZ motor and 13 tooth pinion gear using a 2 S lipo nvision battery 44 Km/h and my car weighs twice the weight of a Tamiya Hornet 1560 grams for Super Hot Shot with battery versus 874 grams for the Hornet. And you went with brushless and did your speed testing on an asphalt road like I did. That's not so impressive for a brushless motor at all. Plus you crashed the little Hornet so many times it's painful to watch.

    • @PeteWylieRC
      @PeteWylieRC  11 месяцев назад

      Hi there. You know I'm not doing speed runs to try and impress anyone, it's just to show what happens if you put that brushless set in a Hornet with standard gearing. I've got over 30 Tamiya RC's and most have a similar brushless set and I've had from 20mph for the 6WD trucks to about 45mph for a TL-01 on 2s lipo. Like I say I only include the speed for information. I haven't got a Super Hotshot but the closest I've tested is my Terra Scorcher which went 32mph. Really it comes down to gear ratio although weight comes into it a bit. The Hornet actually weighs 1270g with battery. I know you can get decent speeds with the fast brushed motors but for me the brushless sets are more reliable and last for years. As to the car turning over a lot I'd challenge anyone to drive one of these with Rough Rider tyres on tarmac with loose stones on and to keep it straight. In my opinion it's the worst handling Tamiya that I have and not really suited to a brushless set. You know when I get comments that are criticising what I'm doing I always have a look to see what they are up to on their channels and find that they have no content. The RC community on here is generally friendly so let's keep it that way 👍

    • @JimBoBJames-no5db
      @JimBoBJames-no5db 11 месяцев назад

      @@PeteWylieRC mate your right I don't have a chanel of my own I'm just a fellow Tamiya enthusiast. I just don't think it was anything to write home about when you put a brushless motor in a Hornet and get a slow speed like that . For instance I also have a kyosho Fazer mk 2 with a 1969 Chevy Camaro Z28 body. Now that kyosho is a great car for vintage touring car racing as well as great handling on the race track and can keep up with a lot of fast cars but my Super Hot Shot goes faster than the kyosho with a brushed motor. My kyosho Fazer ( I actually have 3) with a kyosho g14 brushed 14 turn motor gets 42 km/h and my Hot Shot which let's face facts is a 40 year old design that never really handled well even when new and is a Tamiya assembly kit actually goes faster than a modern 1 year old kyosho Fazer. So in this context I don't think getting 43 km/ h with a brushless set up is really anything to write home about. And mate you know I've seen Glenn from Tamiya legends on RUclips getting 43 mph with a Tamiya Grasshopper and it's completely standard only fitted with full ball bearings and 3s lipo and a warmer brushed Tamiya sport tuned motor. Check him out Glenn Everitt I think is his name from Tamiya legends. so going brushless and getting only 43 km/h is really quite poxy. You have to face the facts mate 👌

    • @PeteWylieRC
      @PeteWylieRC  11 месяцев назад

      @@JimBoBJames-no5db Again I would say that I'm just showing what happened. If I'd have put a clickbait thumbnail saying it was the fastest Hornet you've ever seen then I might deserve some criticism. You keep saying it's nothing to write home about and I agree. Like I was saying this is a friendly community and most people are just respecting what others are doing and not slagging them off because they weren't the best or fastest. We are just people enjoying a hobby and sharing what we are up to. I'm very sorry if I gave the impression that this Hornet was going to be fast. I have fully faced the facts so thank you for pointing out the error of my ways ☹️

      @@PeteWylieRC no mate it's me that should say sorry if I gave the impression that I was upset with you. Sorry ok. But I'm using a brushed Tamiya motor and I'm quite happy with my Super Hot Shot. I admit brushless is great in some applications and most companies in RC today are using brushless while Tamiya has always used brushed motors and only in the last few years people has realised that it's possible to install a brushless set up in a Tamiya. I think maybe the first regular production released car from Tamiya which is claimed to be compatible with a brushless motor is the BBX 01 now in 2023. And even then it's still probably going to not be as fast as say a kyosho Fazer VE BRUSHLESS Camaro or Dodge charger VE Brushless mainly due to the chassis on kyosho Fazer is a great race chassis and how much horsepower can a Tamiya gearbox and differential handle. As far as I know kyosho and Traxxas use sintered metal pinion gears and lots stronger gearbox internals than Tamiya but don't get me wrong I absolutely love Tamiya mainly for the build aspect and the fun of putting together a buggy myself whereas a ready to run kind off feels soulless to me. And I had Tamiya static model kits and 1 vintage Tamiya Fox back in the 1980's around 1987.way before I ever brought a ready to run straight out of the box car.I ABSOLUTELY LOVE TAMIYA RC CARS Sorry again if you got the wrong impression . Cheers mate👌🥰.

      @@JimBoBJames-no5db Ah fair enough, it did come across as being critical of what I was doing and saying it wasn't good enough. It's hard to tell from written comments. I did have somebody post up a video on RUclips just to slag me off about this Hornet video and tell me I'm a moron so I thought your comments were more of the same. Apology accepted and sorry I took it the wrong way. The Hornet now has a silver can brushed motor and I think it goes 18mph with 2s lipo so 27mph was a pretty good increase on that but not the best. Yes the Tamiya gearboxes aren't always that strong but you can generally get away with brushless. The pinions are too soft as you say and that's something I upgrade if it's going to be a regular runner. Be nice if Tamiya upgraded the re-releases in the way that Kyosho has as they are making lovely new versions of the classics. With the RTR cars I would rather build a kit but there are good bashers like the Arrma trucks that I'm a fan of because I can beat them up and get that out of my system so the Tamiyas can have an easier ride. Over all it's great that there is so much more choice out there than when I was a child and also there is a great community of people doing it so it's been good for making friends 👍👍
