I was one of the Archer in the imperial army in the film and we did get taught how to use to bow the right way. Why the lead actress used the 3 finger draw? I have no idea. But at the end of the day its a Disney movie.

Historically, physically smaller people and people who didn't know how to shoot bows wouldn't have been given bows...but rather relegated to logistics or equipped with melee weapons such as polearms that didn't require nearly as much training. For example, there is a Warring States era text that stated the following: ”The basic rule of warfare that should be taught is that men of short stature should carry spears and spear-tipped halberd, the tall should carry bows and crossbows, the strong should carry the flags and banners, the courageous should carry the bells and the drums, the weak should serve in logistics, while the wise should be involved in planning." -Wu Qi

The 3 finger draw on either side of the bow can be used to draw heavy warbows, especially if the archer lost her thumb ring or has a broken thumb. The arrow can rest on either side. There is no right or wrong technique. Both works. I will make videos demonstrating that. At 140lbs I can shoot straight on either side of the bow. This style is called Persian draw. You actually apply a moment towards the bow shelf similar to your thumb. We need to open our minds. And everything ur stating is really nick picking a Disney film that doesn't care about what archers think
This is quite annoying because there was an archer on set who was teaching actors to use the thumb draw. I wonder why the main actress didn't get the memo.
You all are lucky to be living in an area where you can do archery. I used to live near a large indoor archery facility. Now I live in Washington, D.C. where there are no indoor facilities, we cannot shoot in our backyards, even against a solid windowless brick wall.
Although I do not practice archery, I find your channel very interesting and informative. I have seen many videos and I would like to try a recurve bow someday, it looks fantastic. I'm not interested in the reasons why youtube recommended your channel a couple of weeks, I love it. Thank you very much.

There’s a video on the robin hood archery that talks about the draw. They used slavic because robin hood adapted to the arabic style, as you can see by the bow, but slavic is easier to change to from Mediterranean so he went with that.

5:02 - 5:10 Do you use the Slavic draw in any of your other videos/practice sessions? One thing I learned from using the Slavic is that your hand is positioned that way to really divide the strain/tension. When I've used it, I have all three fingers under the arrow (instead of two like the illustration in Saracen Archery) with two extra arrows between my first two fingers, and the thumb holding the nocks down to avoid dropping them. So basically every finger is doing something and it takes a lotta pressure off.
Another reason they have the arrow on the right side is because it makes shooting faster easier it makes it one motion instead of pulling the arrow putting it on the left side of the bow and then knocking it but when you put it on the right side then you get the arrow knock it and shoot it’s just faster

As a film fan I was actually impressed with this trailer. Film being my first love (archery second). What I liked (and was frankly surprised by) was how the film had the same look and feel and more recent Chinese film epics. RED CLIFF, BATTLE OF THE WARRIORS, THREE KINGDOMS: RESURRECTION OF THE DRAGON, with a little more Hollywood feel, something akin to Zhang Yimoue's THE GREAT WALL. I really don't care much about Disney one way or another, and happily skip ALADDIN, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST and what ever else they are remaking, but over all this teaser got me interested. As for the archery, first thing I noticed was Mulan's draw hand haha. Regardless, good video Nu. Side question: You mention a lot of films in your videos, what are some of your favorite movies? Just asking out of curiosity.

I got it from Grace Randolph (Beyond The Trailer) that they are doing reshoots at this time. If this criticism reaches the producers then they may take the time to correct it. My guess is---just movie-wise---is that like you said "pinch hard enough" and pulling the string diagonally to the right (since you can see she pulls it all the way back). I've heard that the extras were trained to shoot correctly, but I doubt that the actress received any specific training to execute correct technique, nor does it matter it the context of the film. It's not such a glaring problem like the Sonic movie.

To give the movie the benefit of the doubt, she might be at the beginning of her training, she has not only the wrong draw technique but she's keeping the arrow way too far from her face, with no anchor point, maybe indicating some fear as she starts using the bow. I don't really like what Lars did to archery, but in Robin Hood he did a good job consulting the team regarding the use of slavic draw. They even explain it in the movie why Robin use slavic instead of thumb or 3-fingers draw.

Here is my take on this one. In the trailer, she is doing speed shooting with that technique. Now, I know a lot of us still remember that we have seen this technique before, including NU Sensei, just need to refresh your memory a little. My opinion only but I think it makes senses. There's another type of thumb draw, thumb under the arrow, index finger on left side and middle on right side. Please make separate videos about other draw techniques as you made for meditarian and thumb draw.
I don't know if this is historic but I have shot a bow with the arrow on the right with a 3 finger draw by flipping my hand upside down so my thumb was on the bottom and my knuckles were against my cheek. and it was reasonably comfortable and accurate
Although the Chinese historical archery methods are very interesting and relatively well-documented I would be interested in seeing the variations used by other cultures. I think there is a lot of focus on Chinese, Korean and Japanese archery but I'd be interested in seeing videos about others. I know that Tibetan and Bhutanese thought archery very important, what about Vietnam?
@@silvonias3985 Movies have a habit of gifting their characters with instinctive precision. I had it in the back of my mind, but it wasn't worth nitpicking on at this point.
Doubt any part of Hollywood cares about accuracy because 1) not enough people will know about the historical accuracy (nor care to find out) 2 they do things that they think will look cool (no matter if it works). An example is firing multiple arrows at once to take out several bad guys (maybe that can be done and done with consistent results. I don’t know) or cutting a rope with an arrow or bullet (hitting would be hard enough but to cut the rope, not going to happen , esp with only one shot) but it’d look cool

Been wondering lately, would I, as a tall archer with a long draw length, be able to use a smaller recurve bow with less string pinch if I used thumb draw? This being a bow with the rest/grip/etc setup properly and not randomly switching with a typical right-handed ILF bow. Not that I necessarily want to permanently change styles either, but, if I was dabble in thumb draw, would bow size mean less or at least be more forgiving?
This is something that I have struggled with in the past. In the end I just used a heavier shooting glove to protect my fingers and I save thumb draw for shooting Asiatic bows. But in theory there is no reason why this wouldn't work. However you would have two options; to shoot off the thumb side which would mean buying new bows ( a left handed bow if you're right handed so that the window is on the opposite side to normal) or shooting the modern Mongolian way with the arrow still on the knuckles but the index finger of the draw hand keeping the arrow in place. I am assuming that by "forgiving" you mean only in relation to string pinch.
Nice opening/closing with Mulan homages/puns. The archery in Brave (2012) was so beautiful, the archery in live action Mulan...5/10. Robin Hood 2018-ish 2/10 (both of those points were from using Jeorg Sprave's weapon designs).
You basically said it all. I'm glad that they used Chinese bows at least but I was a bit disappointed as well when I saw that they had shown the arrow on the correct side of the bow but with her doing the incorrect draw with using the Mediterranean draw rather than an Asiatic thumb draw
It looks like your string is somehow sitting below the string nock on your Manchu bow there, what's going on with that? Is that a second nock for a stringer??
4:39 5:54 The Slavic draw, the finger creating what Saracen Archery calls the "Sassanid lock" and/or the 'Slav' is my choice grip nowadays. Gotten better groupings with it in just a few months practice than after a few years with the classic three finger draw. Sounds weird, right? Cause the aiming angle changes and such, especially using the ear as an anchor instead of the corner of your mouth? But yeah lol it packs a major punch.
Idk, the order to free fire at my local range is "fire at will," usually followed by an apology to Will, who's asked we change the order numerous times in the past.

The arrow is for sure CG, because it doesn't actually go between her fingers, there's no gap for it.

@@ULTRAOutdoorsman I think that, for a company like Disney that bends over backward to be politically correct, they are downright racist when it comes to not getting stuff historically accurate about Chinese culture. I don't really like what Lars did to archery, but in Robin Hood he did a good job consulting the team regarding the use of slavic draw. They even explain it in the movie why Robin use slavic instead of thumb or 3-fingers draw.

Here is my take on this one. In the trailer, she is doing speed shooting with that technique. Now, I know a lot of us still remember that we have seen this technique before, including NU Sensei, just need to refresh your memory a little. My opinion only but I think it makes senses. We have Lars to thank for this technique. He is doing speed shooting with this exact technique. He claimed to re-discover the way warriors of the past use their bows so, may be Disney bought it? Who know!

There's another type of thumb draw, thumb under the arrow, index finger on left side and middle on right side.
Please make separate videos about other draw techniques as you made for meditarian and thumb draw.

I don't know if this is historic but I have shot a bow with the arrow on the right with a 3 finger draw by flipping my hand upside down so my thumb was on the bottom and my knuckles were against my cheek. and it was reasonably comfortable and accurate

Although the Chinese historical archery methods are very interesting and relatively well-documented I would be interested in seeing the variations used by other cultures. I think there is a lot of focus on Chinese, Korean and Japanese archery but I'd be interested in seeing videos about others. I know that Tibetan and Bhutanese thought archery very important, what about Vietnam?

Doubt any part of Hollywood cares about accuracy because 1) not enough people will know about the historical accuracy (nor care to find out) 2 they do things that they think will look cool (no matter if it works). An example is firing multiple arrows at once to take out several bad guys (maybe that can be done and done with consistent results. I don’t know) or cutting a rope with an arrow or bullet (hitting would be hard enough but to cut the rope, not going to happen , esp with only one shot) but it’d look cool
The movie makers should hire a consultant to show them how to do it right.

Ok, I have watched the trailer ... please have a look at the archery section at 0.25 speed ... I love how the 2nd arrow just JUMPS into her hand out of nowhere .... and I will not comment on her release, she'd not hit the spot she's aiming at ever with that kind of release ...
Been wondering lately, would I, as a tall archer with a long draw length, be able to use a smaller recurve bow with less string pinch if I used thumb draw?
This being a bow with the rest/grip/etc setup properly and not randomly switching with a typical right-handed ILF bow. Not that I necessarily want to permanently change styles either, but, if I was dabble in thumb draw, would bow size mean less or at least be more forgiving?
This is something that I have struggled with in the past. In the end I just used a heavier shooting glove to protect my fingers and I save thumb draw for shooting Asiatic bows. But in theory there is no reason why this wouldn't work. However you would have two options; to shoot off the thumb side which would mean buying new bows ( a left handed bow if you're right handed so that the window is on the opposite side to normal) or shooting the modern Mongolian way with the arrow still on the knuckles but the index finger of the draw hand keeping the arrow in place.
I am assuming that by "forgiving" you mean only in relation to string pinch.
Nice opening/closing with Mulan homages/puns. The archery in Brave (2012) was so beautiful, the archery in live action Mulan...5/10. Robin Hood 2018-ish 2/10 (both of those points were from using Jeorg Sprave's weapon designs).
The archery in Brave was totally unrealistic, with such large arrow heads she should have missed the targets
You basically said it all. I'm glad that they used Chinese bows at least but I was a bit disappointed as well when I saw that they had shown the arrow on the correct side of the bow but with her doing the incorrect draw with using the Mediterranean draw rather than an Asiatic thumb draw

It's likely a prop bow made from PVC, with an elastic band.
It looks like your string is somehow sitting below the string nock on your Manchu bow there, what's going on with that? Is that a second nock for a stringer??

The Slavic draw, the finger creating what Saracen Archery calls the "Sassanid lock" and/or the 'Slav' is my choice grip nowadays. Gotten better groupings with it in just a few months practice than after a few years with the classic three finger draw. Sounds weird, right? Cause the aiming angle changes and such, especially using the ear as an anchor instead of the corner of your mouth? But yeah lol it packs a major punch.
Why do archers hate it when you say "fire a bow", but they caution about "dry firing" ?
Idk, the order to free fire at my local range is "fire at will," usually followed by an apology to Will, who's asked we change the order numerous times in the past.
You would think that even a slightly competent Archery consultant would have caught this... But, then again, this is the movie industry...
