  • In this episode, Tobias is on a driven hunt for deer, wild boar, and mouflon at Eriksberg in southern Sweden. Eriksbergs is a unique estate of app. 3200 acres. Most of the area is high fenced and there is a dense population of wild boar, fallow deer, red deer, mouflon, European bison, and Père David's deer.
Eriksberg is not mainly a hunting area, it is a park for visitors to observe wildlife, but of course, the population will increase and needs to be regulated.
Even if there is a lot of game, it is hard to get a clean shot and at Eriksberg there is also a lot of stones and rocks to consider when shooting.
Come along with Tobias for a day of exiting driven hunt.
    2:00 The first beat.
7:44 Wild boar - More or less than 60 kgs?
9:22 The second beat - Père Davids Deer
12:10 The third beat - A lot of big fallow stags.
16:48 Tobias shoots a big fallow deer.
We get a lot of questions regarding equipment, so we do a short list here of the things we use:
Rifle: Steel Action HM in caliber 9,3x62
    Scope: Trijicon AccuPoint 1-6x24

      Colin,
I am happy that you liked the film. I have not studied the Pere Davids deer, I am not familiar with how they live, but I have seen several single walking males at other times when I visited Eriksberg. Maybe the herd structure is that a strong male pushes out the younger ones.

Just discovered some of your videos and it is really good material. Just this one - fenced hunting not my cup of tea but I respect that others like it and understand that it might give good footage, not for me to decide for others. Especially across different hunting cultures (countries/traditions) it becomes obvious how bound we are by our own tradition. In Norway only small dogs allowed on roe deer, a few miles south only big dogs that can take game down. In Africa, only head shots as to not waste any meat - in Norway you can go to jail for the same shot.

    • @RedMooseHunting

      Hi,
Thanks for your feedback. Like you say, hunting style and traditions vary a lot around the world. Many hunting film producers make a film in fenced areas, but won't just tell about it. We decided to be open and transparent about it, in the end, I think that this is for the best.
Normally I do not either enjoy fenced areas for driven hunts, but as you say, it is easier to get some video....but I will probably never hunt in a normal 100-300 ha "Fenced- hunting-area", because I do not like the idea of that animals is brought up just to please hunter to take their lives for fun.
The reason I accept and enjoy to hunt in Eriksberg, is that Eriksbergs main purpose is not hunting. It is a place for people to observe wildlife and they keep genetic pure deer as a gen-bank. Of course, the animal population rises and need to be culled off. I realize that there are different shades of grey when it comes to explain and understand these differences, but for me, it is a great difference in the main purpose of why the animals are fenced, how big the area is, and how the hunt is performed.
(The absolute vast majority of hunts and videos we do is in open areas, we visit Erikberg maybe once or twice every year and so for no other fenced areas.)

Thats why I never go to driven hunts where they announce a weight limit. You are not effective anymore and that was wasted chance on a single male boar. It was a boarder case around 60-70kg I would guess, maybe only a little more if you weight without guts like we do in Germany. Otherwise it would be far over 60
Like your videos especially since your very open video about your risky shot with the other hunter in the background

    • @RedMooseHunting
      @RedMooseHunting  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for your comment. :-)
As I see it it is a part of the management to limit or restrict the toll we take. On deer for example we often have different classes of deer and leave some to grow older and we cull some. As I see it when it comes to wild boar it is the same. In many populations, we need a higher count of old male boars. We also need to protect the big females that lead the heard. The main toll shall be taken on the young ones and driven hunt is perfect for culling high numbers. Then when stalking and shooting at bait, it is easier to evaluate and adjust the cull of the older wild boars. There you have a better chance to see if a female has small ones or estimates the age of males. As I see it, this is hard to do for a general hunter on a driven hunt and you can never know if a bigger female is alone or if she just been cut off from her young ones.
Another aspect to take into consideration is how dense the population is and if there are big problems caused by the wild boars, so of course, it can be different strategies depending on which area you are hunting in.
Here in Sweden we normally talk about the living weight of the wild boar when setting weight limitations at ha hunt. So in this case I would say the the boar is far beyond 60 kg. However, when talking about the meat of the dead game, we normally talk about the "slaughter-weight". This is the carcass of only meat and bone, with the guts, skin, head, and feet taken away.
I am glad you like our videos,
I wish you a nice day!

@@RedMooseHunting I'm not a friend of it, but you should do how you like. I also hunted in Africa in a 1.000ha fenced farm, but the fencing there is mainly for marking the borders. Surely big animals can't cross it, but small game like warthogs and predators goes where they want to go. 1.000ha is a very big area, so compared to the bad calling I think its still OK to call it "hunting". Waidmannsheil 📯🌿

    • @RedMooseHunting
      @RedMooseHunting  4 года назад +1

@@TimmBellafonte I agree with you and understand what you mean. I know it is VERY hard to tell the different shades and aspect of what someone like or accept. For me, there is many different aspects of hunting or not hunting in fenced areas. It is not only black or white, so to speak.
In this case, the animals are not fenced mainly for hunting. For me, it feels much more OK to hunt them there since they must regulate them. I understand that this can be hard to explain, but compared to a similar area f 1000 ha, there someone keeps animals just for hunting, for me personally, it would feel less attractive to hunt in a place like that. I think it for me is the underlying moral of that we should not keep animals fenced, just to become live targets. So even if the results are the same, for me it makes a difference.
...hope you understand what I am trying to say... ;-)

You have to take different precautions depending on where you hunt. Here in Sweden, we do not have the disease nearby and we have the baltic, but of course, the disease can spread faster than expected. However, as I say in the video, this is a fenced area, so that is also a reason to consider.

      Hej,
