this looks like one of those towns that seem stuck in the 50’s, and that’s what i love about it

I did two tours of residency here, first in the '70s when I worked as News Dir. at the local radio station, KTNM. I returned 20-something years later, semi-retired, to work as a freelance columnist, servicing an upstart newspaper while selling local news to Amarillo media including KFDA TV (Ch 10). That '50s promotional theme you mentioned actually unfolded much later.
For decades, the town had been dying economically, until local merchants found a common promotional campaign they could all rally around: nostalgia. But Tucumcari has more to offer than feel-good '50s jukebox replicas and restored Eisenhower-era automobiles; Mesalands college for instance on the west side, which hosts one of the country's most impressive paleontology museums, a must-see even if you're only spending one night in town. And then there's the New Mexico Rt 66 Museum, one of the most comprehensive and entertaining of it's kind anywhere.
If it sounds like I'm plugging Tucumcari, well, yes, I guess I am. It wasn't my "hometown," but folks there always made me feel like it was. I hope you get there someday.

Love this town! It kind of reminds me of, me. Past it's prime, beat up and a piece missing maybe, but still kicking. Love to move out there and end my days. They got a nice cemetery.

Ha! Tucumcari is fast becoming one of my favorite places in the US. Part of my graduate research, I stumbled on your video here and plan to use it as a citation about this town. Tucumcari is a product of the minds and labor of the people who live and work there. It is a product of the souls that have and continue to create it. It's a wonderful place. (And I see you stayed at my FAVORITE Motel Safari! FABULOUSSSSSS!!!! Larry is great.)

I think Kix on 66 is gone (3/24). Been closed for a while, I think. If not, disregard this post. Kix was always a good place to eat, especially breakfast for some reason. I'm not sure if there are any other places in town to eat breakfast. I believe Del's is closed for breakfast. Kis was located in an old, 60s era Denny type place. Since they left there has been a few other owners who ran it. That's pretty standard for these old Route 66 town: lots of business turnover. Especially with the hotels along the Route.
