16:24 In a Week has a special place in my heart. I love that every now and then, we just get a spooky fairy tale, Like Real People Do is another one. Why can't "Normal" song premises be that interesting lol.
Oh, yes, the spooky fairy tales. LOVE THEM. In a Week, In the Woods, Like Real People Do. From Eden has that element. He's such a story teller. Work Song feels like something from the 1940 American South.
26:57 "Does that mean... is it gonna be happy?" Hozier: With the hate of some other man's beliefs. The song draws a parallel between colonization and s. assault: how people (namely men) attempt to consume and possess what is not theirs. He does so with more subtlety in "Swan Over Leda" as well. It's a HARD listen, and you need to be versed in several mythological stories to appreciate fully, but it's so worth it.
He did a slower, more acoustic version of From Eden when I saw him live, and there was something so tender about it? Like you could really feel his care and love towards this more innocent person, and his like, regret towards knowing he'll be a corrupting influence, but still his desire to get closer to them. While I've always liked the song, hearing that version of it live gave it a whole new life for me and it's one of my favorites now. I'm pretty sure there's a recording of it on RUclips! Love the reaction!
I love the way he takes known lore and takes it from a different POV. He did something similar with Francesca. To me, it seems that he was talking from the POV of Francesca's lover Paulo. He's saying that, while they're being punished for their "lust" he's fine with it. He loved her so much he'd do it again just to be put back in. From Eden paints the snake, aka the devil, im a much more nuanced way than the bible sees him. Its tongue in cheek, sure, but it's also adding a voice to someone who doesnt get one in the original story. Kinda like he did in Francesca
I totally have the same vision for Work Song! I also see talking about the two different versions of work. I get the same imagery you do, but also him talking about the work him and his partner put in to make their relationship as strong as it is. That their love is deep because they keep choosing each other without judgement. That might be a reach but damn it I love that song!
i actually love this video so much. not only do you provide hilarious commentary, it’s so satisfying to see you actually *get* the meaning of the songs. as a hozier fan, it’s so refreshing to see someone look deeper into his work and do more than surface level analysis. like, when you said that maybe hozier was talking to the other workers in work song, i was so excited because that’s how i interpreted it too! anyway i’m really excited for your wasteland video because wasteland baby is my favorite album. have a good day!
I still cant figure out what album is best. Wasteland baby was the first one i listened to all the way through and immediately went to this one. Also your calling out work song as a... work song (like a sea shanty) was spot on. He starts the verses adressing the "boys" and telling them whats keeping him going. I enjoyed your take on the "ugly but clean" line in cherry wine also. I hadnt gone there before but you are 100% i think.
It felt like saying the frozen song was crazy but it's all I could come up with in a split second, and Cherry Wine is so gut punch but beautiful song to me
Someone New is kinda literal, & the audacity of the 1st line "Go take this the wrong way" addressing presumably his girl confronting him about his wandering eye. Look up the verse because they are highly quotable & delicious to sing & say.... oh & the lowkey shade to Aretha too with the reference to her signature song "I Say a Lil Payer", it's Hozier at his most fuckboi. Cuz he does have those songs too besides love & devotion.
Would love to see you continue reacting to Hozier's discography it's good stuff.. but also I would love to see you react to Chappell Roan...shes soooo good!!!
I hadve one mroe Hozier album to do, but I was thinking about doing Chappell Roan ever since I heard a snippet of her HOT TO GO song, this might be the confirmation 🤭
Sorry im spamming the shit out of your comment section but girl you need to give yourself more credit! You've been on it the whole time. Love that you're liking his work so much ☺️
I’m soooo late, but don’t worry, you were right on the money with Foreigner’s God, aside from forgetting the ~subplot~ with the woman. Hozier doesn’t go too deep into historic specifics lyrically, but has always had a song or two per album about his grief for his country’s past, and his connection to the cultures of other countries as a result. In 1155, the Pope at the time authorised King Henry II to have “authority” over Ireland, green-lighting Britain’s VERY FIRST colony. The Irish were brut4l1sed, 3nsl4ved, punished for talking their own language, and the country became dominated by other branches of Christianity. If you’ve heard jokes about potatoes, or heard of the “great Irish famine”, the Irish people actually consider it a g3n0c1de because despite the bad farming conditions, there was still enough food to live on… But the crop was all taken and sold on by British occupants . Northern Ireland is still governed by British law. Although the Irish have been fighting for that last bit of their land back since 1921, the Irish living there now are partly descendants of the British who invaded, so opinions on a united Ireland vary. The Irish language was nearly eradicated, but it is making a comeback and some communities insist on avoiding English altogether. It is a long, complex, sad history, but we must remember as to avoid the mistakes of the past and keep our eyes out for those suffering today… 👀 Hope you are having a lovely week, and I’m off to binge your other reactions now haha!
I love the layers in the songs, it feels like every time I listen to an album of his I'm learning something new. Also, I hope you enjoy the other videos
I thought I was going so far into left field 😭, and that website definitely sucks I think I'm going to start trying to find interviews from him instead.

Hozier is mind blowing live. Literally sounds better live than on the albums. Plus, he a beautiful person - literally and figuratively.

The most recent version in Austin is the one I saw, but the version at the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium is another great slower version!
