Autumn leaves (Mystic improvisation with Joscho Stephan & Biréli Lagréne)

- If two geniuses meet in a genial mood, then a musical treasure can arise, that is not repeatable. This is exactly what happened on March 5, 2020 with Joscho Stephan and Biréli Lagréne. The announcement was a title everyone knows - Autumn Leaves. After 15 minutes of never-ending improvisation and constant theme variation, an unplanned and untested masterpiece has emerged, which has little to do with the actual title melody, but shows that this musical random product of the highest level can only come from the mysticism of chance. Chapeau!
The motiv of Autumn leaves was written 1945 by Joseph Kosma for the movie Les Portes de la nuit and was performed by actor Yves Montand. Since then countless jazz and pop stars like Bill Evans or Eric Clapton released their own interpretation of Autumn leaves.

The guy on the bass giving absolutely no fucks and accompanying like a god
Wow this double bass player deserve credit, is insanely good at keeping the jam going, and great tone.
Never noticed him 😂
@@joesiciliano2063 Because:
1) you're listening on a crappy phone/laptop speaker
2) he's doing great job
Kudos to the guys who shot and recorded that. The sound rendition is excellent and the camera catches the best of what happens on stage between the musicians ! And thank you for putting it online. The result is a pure gem.
They are actually THREE! Great Bass playing. A good accompaniment is the equivalent of a good solo...
Gela Tabashidze not the equivalent dude. A standard bassplayer holding a simple groove is not equivalent to bireli lagrene going on a mindblowing or creative solo...different levels of musicianship.
@@donaldvanvliet9039 He should have been mentioned ..
@@gelartab the names are not mentioned to honor their achievements dude, they are mentioned to pull in viewers. It's showbizz, not graduation.
@@donaldvanvliet9039 Everyone's work,in every business, should be mentioned and respected.

The talent and performances are literally transcendental. The technique, individually, is beyond belief. Collectively, absolutely divine! At 7:05, they go into a baroque conversation. Beautiful!
Great to watch both above just Gypsy licks. Joe Pass would love it, I am sure! (Wes too... :-)
What about the bass player? He's a big part of it Don't forget him what's his name?
Agreed
It appears at the beginning, credited as Volker Kamp
well where does it stop ? should we name the sound engineer or the janitor ? let's stick to the musicians.
@@proviste Bruh. Bass is an instrument, and an important part, like drums
what about the Sun? it gave trees energy to produce fruit :) I agree this bass player can be heard by my joyful ears. A human brightly stood and played part of it...adding a layer of depth...MMremember! Ahava :) Water=LIFE eat FRUITS live life love nature
The guitar had to smoke a cigarette after this
i think so!😆
Thanks Bireli and Joscho for making this world better.
How the conversation between the instruments flow is amazing. Props to the bass player.
The mix between la grange and the mission impossible theme is a real treat.

I missed the Mission Impossible; where was that? Picked up the James Bond....
I don't know if people are so clear about it but there is too much history of the Gipsy Jazz guitar condensed in these two guitars. So much so I say, if Stochelo Rosenberg were present, we would have the complete living legacy of Dyango. I am honestly excited to see and hear them play together. Thanks for sharing this video.
I would add Angelo Debarre to this Dream Team of Jazz Manouche guitars.
To my taste, the elegance of A. Debarre is almost unmatched.
The MUSICAL level of Bireli is so astonishing, it's far, far beyond technic...
Strong bass here, totally in the pocket
Agree
Zwischen Bireli Lagréne und J.S. liegen Welten.
You cant get any more beautiful than this. I have to hold back the tears.
unbelievably good - caught myself clapping at the end sitting alone at home! Just the Best 👋🙌
Same here!
This jam is beyond reason, Joscho and Bireli?!!!? it cannot get better
Joschos solo amazing but felt bit like he tried to include every little trick and variations he knows and has worked out into that one solo. Birelli seems more like "I'll just play whatever comes", which is kinda more interesting because it sounds more in the moment really than pre worked solo.
couldn't agree more. its a good change of pace from one soloist to the next, bireli in his later years has really started developing his motifs in his playing that really make it enjoyable to listen too. however I do believe that joscho is a far more technical player than bireli I feel as if bireli is more adventurous and creative
Joscho always plays this way. It might not be for everyone, but as a student I appreciate the fact that he tries 'to include every little trick and variation he knows' because I love learning them myself (0.5 speed lol)
Roy Horbison i love joschos playing! He really is the cleanest gypsy jazz player, and his use of raking and pick articulation is second to none. I think the differences here are quite obvious from joscho to bireli as birelis harmonic knowledge and melodic sensibility is unparalleled between the two.
@@rudyalexandermarquezmusic I've only seen bireli play on this particular video, but yes I agree his choice of harmony/melody was incredibly on point. I'll check him out very soon.
Bireli is the best. He always seems to be one more step ahead of everyone else.
I recently bought the Yamaha classic electric model Bireli is playing: a Chinese made guitar with a cedar top and laminated mahogany back and sides with Fishman electronics. As you can hear, it's a fine instrument. I paid $500 CDN (approx. $400 USD). It was a steal of a deal!
Two wonderful monsters 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Joscho is the best.... with Bireli and Tommy. 👍
pat martino bro.. pat martino
Yes, Joscho is a fantastic guitar player, sometimes it is more guitar playing than music, but it is always great. As a child he fell into the cauldron with the magic potion.
My guitar did not come with all those notes!😂😂 And love the nod to ZZ! Out freakin standing!!!!!
It’s always interesting to watch these amateur players try to play gypsy jazz. Keep practicing guys you’ll get there.
Nice Joke, Joe!

A really SUBLIME performance from three great musicians, indeed a rare unrehearsed masterpiece of musical communication! Joscho just keep on getting better and better, and Bireli is getting.... well - bigger and bigger, hehe.....
Extraordinaire ....... époustouflant .......... vite un CD à deux !
the three of them...what a delight...for me wonderful layering amazing and the bass was essential...
Joscho's face : look at me i'm having a ball and showing off.
Bireli's face : someone woke me up for this and that's a mistake he'll never make again.
😆
That’s true as good as joscho is, he don’t know how to play with others just showing off without any respect to others or even listenin. Joscho plays for himself.
Maybe Joscho arrange the meeting and they had a agreement who would play what. Regardless that are both masters and have a good time playing together. And the bass player did a fantastic job keeping the beat.
@@mrbob92679 I know , it was a joke mate...Bireli pretty much always has a serious, grumpy, almost disinterested face when he plays...it's just how he is.
I love the bassist
Incredible, amazing masterpiece of music
What a way to breathe fresh life into a classic!. Outstanding!
Can't breathe in the first 5 minutes-my all time favorit 5 minutes!... You're all 3 outstanding!
what an exquisite conversation

Two giants of guitar improvisation.
3 giants
Insane discussion just down there : in any jazz ensemble, especially simple trio, all musicians are mentioned. Nothing about level, solo or WTF.
Hier ist Volker Kamp, double bass. Thank u.
This just hit me the right way, great musicians and songs. Fantastic!
Nie tylko Joscho to geniusz, Bireli także! Wypada też wspomnieć o basiście, jest świetny!
Thank you for the wonderful !!!
The beautiful minds of musicians! So much beauty can be conceived in them! 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻🎼🎵🎶🎵🎶🎼
thanks thanks thanks my ears are squirting xD ahahahahhahah
Cette impro a presque tué le covid
provost alain since when is the bass not considered a musical instrument?
Bravo!
I thought Joscho is a German and overcoming any historical hesitation, he recognized the unique art of manouche, he sought out these musicians and wanted to confront them
It feels like Joscho is making their way through the ranks of te classics, inviting Rosenberg and Lagrene, just to show them who's boss.
@@golfplaat2
Eh? He's great alright, but have you listened to Bireli here? I mean, there's no comparison
Nice Jam in the middle! Rock and roll haha
While I'm a huge fan of Joscho, who I feel is the best acoustic jazz (not just gypsy jazz) player today, this is some of Bireli's best playing I've heard as well. Also agree the bass player's playing is right up there with the other two.
excelente interpretación....gracias ...
Joscho is a genius!
Nice bass
There should be a LOVE button in youtube
15 Minutes 37 de bonheur ...
I'm a huge fan of manouche jazz music and people keep comparing it to lofi when I introduce it to them and idk I just really dont see it! Am I crazy or ?.
For reference I listen to lofi as well
haha wow I don't know lo-fi is so relaxed and gypsy jazz so full of energy, but maybe those ppl don't really listen to old school music, so the classy vibes may remind them of lofi? I'm a huge fan of both and would love a gypsy-lofi track to be honest haha! maybe 'seul ce soir' or something?
@@ThePepeVer right!? I dont get it but that's honestly a great idea to mix them I'm right try that
You can see similarities between any genres
Lofi is a "bastard " kind of music based on jazz, rock, hip-hop, psychedelic and as a popular non traditional genre it absorb and digest materials from other types and culture to build specific atmospheres such as nostalgia or reverie for example
Its a little bit more like that but if you record this on a shitty tape and put a j-dilla like beat on top, it's lo-fi
How about Bireli's quote from Tico Tico just after the Bach-like section, around 8:09! And then they go to La Grange by ZZ Top.
There are fantastic moments in life , like this improvisation ...
Wow if there's ever proof you don't need the best gear to be awesome Biréli is using a Yamaha
High end Yamaha guitars are typically exquisitely high quality and consistently well reviewed. One example is their LL series of acoustics. Beautiful but pricy.
I'm pretty sure, he's using this model, so in fact a high priced and high quality Instrument. Though Biréli is known for playing great on any guitar no matter the quality. www.musikhaus-hermann.de/yamaha-ncx2000fm-nylonbesaitung-mit-tonabnehmer-36956/
Even if you watch videos when he was a kid that's what he has been playing!
Three masters playing off of each other!
Why does Bireli Lagrene always look like he's a little annoyed being there lol
Maybe he is =)
I think it's called concentration:)
He has a defect in his jaw, which is more apparent in his younger videos, so unfortunately he always looks mildly inconvenienced unless he's smiling.
Just his usual poker face.
