I think the guy in the background is very much a human but he knows the elves exist and then he realizes Keefe is an elf and helps him fit in the human world.
Yeah I think he will have to enlist the help of humans somehow, but will he tell them he is an elf??

Not to be skeptical, but how can that human in the background know that else exist? Wouldn’t he have told the news in everything would’ve jumbled up into chaos? and he would’ve discovered the lost cities for him or herself. but I’m happy to be proven wrong.

Fanbase, remember when Alvar lost his memories? He turned out just a scared, broken person. Alvar would help Keefe because he either wants revenge, or he has changed, remember how close he was to siding with Sophie and the gang at Everglen? I can't say the same for Fitz.

When I first saw the cover it was really underwhelming, I was expecting something like unlocked, but it grew on me and it looks a bit better, keefe being on it low-key makes it wayyy better because Sophie being there instead of him feels weird in my mind, he also looks good.

I think the tree in the background is significant in some way. Because it's so beautiful and breathtaking and it just seems a bit out of place. Also because there are usually other trees by tree instead of one by itself. But Keefe looks great in this!

I saw a book update on Wattpad with the cover reveal yesterday and I thought it was a joke~
Another thought I had is maybe that was him in some area of like London or something trying to find out more answers about that family with the letter and that guy maybe he's like there to help him understand things either he's a human or he's an elf from like maybe the Black Swan or Neverseen double agent maybe I love if there was Neverseen double agent! Also I really like the cover because honestly it gives a little more of a calm vibe to the rest of them and it just kind of puts us at ease but also that guy in the back is kind of like giving a little bit of tension and I love how Keefe like on the side I feel like it symbolizes him trying to blend in maybe... And maybe that other family is someone he was either staying with or like was a friend or maybe it was someone who was investigating because he found a link to his mother or something with them...

Shannon did confirm today on her Instagram page that the hooded figure will appear in the book! We just have to wait and see! 🤍
I have no clue what the next book will be. Here are a few theories I've come up with.
The hooded guy is Alvar. In the past, Keefe always looked up to him... Maybe Alvar is against Lady Gisela just like Rayni is and wants to help Keefe? Or maybe Keefe is helping Alvar because Alvar was in the Forbidden Cities and the last time he was seen, he was a mess. Other commenters mentioned that Keefe said Alvar "got help" but didn't clarify *who* helped him. This is a stretch, but it would play out interestingly. And cause beef between Fitz and Keefe. Don't we love drama in this community? :)
Also, about the cover... I do agree that it's bland compared to the other ones. However, it's meant to be that way. Human cities aren't that exciting and that's where Hunkyhair aimed to escape. He wants to blend in. It adds to the story. And I'd love to see things from his perspective in the human world! I've always wanted Shannon to eventually include humans and elves together.

So Keefe is funny and everything despite it all but I think it’s be funny if Shannon made his character POV like Leo Valdez from heroes of Olympus, where from his friends’ perspectives he’s funny and lighthearted but from his he’s putting on a show to make others feel better and is actually struggling a lot with his past.
We already kinda know that abt his character but I’m curious how it’ll be written as a whole

I hope there’s a lot of action in this book. Also, I believe that the man in the back could be a neverseen member spying on keefe. Maybe he’ll get ambushed later in the book, idk. Super excited for this book tho!
Ok my theory is that, the guy in the hood is finton and he escaped. The people by keefe are Sophie’s human parents. Now I think that Keefe helped Finton escape in some kind of plan (like In neverseen). Now the little boy could be an elf and keefe knows this, or something (I’m not really sure on this)
The “he doesn’t look THAT depressed” got me laughing 🤣 I think that guy is human and maybe has a connection with this Benedict guy?… Because the detail about this human Gisela tried to recruit was so random and I think it will get a more proper meaning later in the series. I also think that family actually has no connection to the story whatsoever, just being background characters- except a scenario plays in my head about THAT KID. Imagine Keefe talking with a little kid! I also think Amy will come in somewhere in the book. Just I am depressed over in 🇦🇺 without the PRE ORDERIBG PRIVILEGES 😭 and to make it worse- my bday is two days after it comes out and I won’t have it then I think I’m going to make friends with a random American and ask them to buy it for me 😃

Your theories are incredible! I also think this character in the center could be Elysian.(and therefore would be a human who controls the source of power of the elves and would explain the title "keepers of the lost cities") This could explain that Keefe doesn't speak to Sophie about this meeting because not think this is important but that explain why this character will be so important.
I totally agree that it has to be Alvar in the back and he didn't say anything because, i mean seriously, who wants to see poor Fitz go all angry again- he HATES Alvar
and honestly, I feel bad for Fitz. I personally don't think he has anger issues as much as everyone is implying. Sure he lashes out plenty, but he's had more drama in his life than any boy I've ever met, so at least SOME of the time, he's had a reason (good and bad)

The cover is not really what i was expecting, like i think i wanted something that we're more used to seeing on the cover with like dazzling scenery, backgrounds, everything (like i still think it looks amazing) but i feel like it makes sense because hes in the human world, where compared to the lost cities, its pretty bland and boring. But yeah im sooo excited for the book!

As a professional artist, here's ACTUALLY why this cover looks off:
(based off of design elements i learned in art school)
1) Keefe is IN A SHADOW - hes supposed to look like hes in a shady spot, but it just kinda.... failed.
2) eyes looking in SLIGHTLY different directions - so slightly it is throwing us off
3) none of his eyes are maing EYE CONTACT with us -- yet he's not looking in a "direction" ether
4) no movement: all the KOTLC covers have MOVEMENT in them
5) no MAGIC LIGHT: All the KOTLc covers had magical light
6) Rough texture of skin: Keefe is lookig like he's made of clay, not human flesh
7) No Hairline: if you imagine pushing Keefe's hair back to look at his hairline, you will notice that the roots of the hair are further back on his head. His hair is just SITTING on his head, not really attached. Not to mention, he has TOO much hair
8) pupills are TOO TINY
9) Iris have differnt light source than the white spot -- also makes pupils look tinier
10) He's not hot -- he looks lifeless in this cover
11) his FACIAL EXPRESSION -- yall i have a lot to say about this : All the KOTLC covers have WONDROUS facial exprerssions that convey the moment. Whether they're scared, angry, happy, in awe, WE CAN SEE WHAT EMOTIONS THEY ARE IN. Each over has a distinct theme that makes sense. But in this cover, Keefe's facial expression is just a lifeless smile that doesn't match the whoel "running away bc im a dangerous person" vibe that is going on in the book. He's also (supposed to be) making eye contact with US, which detaches him from the actual story and cover of the book. He's just kinda... standing there, smiling at us, while a creepy guy stares at him. ALL THE OTHER COVERS The characters are IN THE MOMENT, there is STUFF going on-- this book cover is just Keefe looking at us and smiliing. NOT SMIRKING like Keefe would, but just.. .smiling?

Every cover that Keeper of the Lost cities has had illustrates the scene containing the climax, or turning point, in the story. I think it’s interesting that this cover shows no tussle or even anything hinting at an impending big event (apart from the sketchy guy in the back🤨). I think it’s also curious that Keefe is portrayed practically looking at the “camera”. Though it also seems as though his eyes are ever so slightly above said “camera”, perhaps insinuating that he’s
looking at/communicating with someone or something 🤷🏻♀️
It would be odd otherwise for him to be looking toward the cover, there must be something in the distance that were not seeing🤷🏻♀️
And for the sketchy guy in the back I would have to spend more time sorting out my theories for who he could be and what he could want. 😂

We all Know about Ethan and his daughter, so I was thinking about something...
What if Keefe finds out the daughter is still alive, or even her dad as well? We all know how good the Neverseen is with faking these things, so Maybe the daughter is Elysian? It makes sense, the relation to that project and why Gisela was interested in Ethan. There are some points and details that may not fit... but I think this is a good chance!

OK OK OK this theory might sound crazy but the black Swan said they were keeping tabs on Keith in the human cities, and Sophie was always asking for updates right but they didn’t know that Gisela was tracking Keith at that time, and they never seen have no problem sneaking around human cities, and since Gisela wasn’t working with the Neverseen anymore, maybe she was sneakily following Keith why she didn’t try capturing him in the human cities or hurting him when she was following him is a mystery to me. Anyways, maybe the person in the back with the hood is Gisela But it still makes no sense why not capturing when you had the perfect chance when humans weren’t around, and Keith was alone, you could’ve captured him, and used him as blackmail against Sophie

I honestly LOVE the cover. I think it’s going more of forbidden cities vibe instead of the lost cities vibe. Like the lost cities is all sparkly vs forbidden cities are idk the word maybe bland?
Hi, so, about the mysterious dude in the background, I thought that maybe its a girl? Idk but the chin looks more feminine in my opinion. I might be wrong! If its someone we already know, I’d say its Alvar, Ruy(Where is he?) or Rayni(haven’t read KOTLC in a while so maybe the temporality doesn’t matches, I think she’s good but she still has a few secrets, doesn’t she?). Or maybe it’s just a new character but i’d prefer an old one ‘cause I think we’ll discover more things(that would get us closer to the end? It’s scary but KOTLC has to end one day😭) than with a new one(my opinion). Anyway I’m sure Shannon will do a great job.

I like the concept of the cover, and how there are humans and a hooded figure, and they’re in a human city… but Keefe’s face looks flat, like he got smushed against a wall as a baby. And his eyes seem like they’re in the wrong position based on the tilt of his head… I look at it and I can’t not see Voldemort… but I think I like it?
I’m so excited for this book… hopefully there won’t be a cliffhanger in this one, because it is just filling in what happened when Keefe was in the human world… but we know how Shannon always ends her books. She has had approximately two KotLC books end without cliffhangers 😭
Also… do we know the hooded figure is a guy? My first thought was Lady Gisela (is she still alive??? The ending of Stellarlune boggled my mind and I can’t keep up with all the characters anymore 😂). Maybe the all-black outfit is what Neverseen wear around humans to not be suspicious? It’s probably just a new character though, as Keefe definitely had *some* outside help to survive in human cities.

Normally the covers are just so dynamic, people fighting, wind blowing in their hair, that’s why I feel like they could have added more, also it’s strange to see his face so up close on a cover, I’m not quite used to it. It does kind of look AI generated, but good art can look like that. I do think they could have put him in a more dynamic pose though

It looks so good!! Not my favorite, and I think Keefe's bangs are a bit short, but it's still so pretty! My theory is that maybe (if the family is important) the family might've hosted Keefe for a bit or they're related to Ethen.

Ok, so hear me out. I was reading stellarlune and noticed that nobody mentioned where exactly Rayni's (glimmer) parents went. Just that Rayni wasn't allowed to go. They did say they were banished- but what if they went to the human world and met up with other elves like them (ones who don't agree with elven laws 😮 and feel more freedom in the human world) 🤔 so what if keefe meets them- this also goes well with the theory that there is a secret elf society living in the human world.
