Raul Julia didn't know she would spit in his face and he licked it. They're both the best actors of their generation and if Raul Julia didn't die so early more people would notice.
My God...that moment at the end of her monologue in which he takes her hand and kisses her palm while she caresses his hair with her other hand is positively breathtaking.
Their chemistry off and on the stage was absolutely stunning. Such a convincing perfomance and probably the best version of this play I have seen. Beautiful!
They are both so excellent in these roles! Her hissy fit is epic! Reminded also of how breathtakingly beautiful she was (and continues to be). Raul is the perfect foil for her with his no-nonsense attitude and his heroic bearing. RIP. I am sad for the future virtuoso performances he no doubt would’ve brought were we not robbed of his presence by his early passing.
Raul julia was a gifted actor who could bring to life any character he played oscar worthy .meryl streep one of my fav of hers was Kramer vs kramer .incredible actress.
This is such an interesting interpretation, that Petruchio is throwing Kate's own aggressive attitudes back at her to show her how ridiculous they were. I highly doubt that Shakespeare and his contemporaries probably would have intended this interpretation in an age where women (unless widowed) were largely treated as property-I assume this is an example of us viewing the play through our modern lenses-but I think it's such an interesting way of looking at their relationship, and definitely makes sense in our modern age. Very interesting to juxtapose this against other interpretations.
I have been looking for this since 1981... once seen, never forgotten! It is impeccable, mesmerizing, passionate, fun - the best team for the play imaginable! THANK YOU for posting this!
I think the thing that people miss is this: There are a lot of trashy men out there, who would never deserve a wife such as this. But there are also trashy women, who make good men suffer. In this instance she learned how to treat him well, and going forward I can see their relationship being well balanced and one of mutual respect.
thanks for uploading this :) i wanted to see it for few years and now i am in play as katherina and it is helpful to watch the best actress in the world how she played it
+Streeper and Moonwalker She was better when she was young. She and I are the same age and I was also an actress in the 1970s. She was an idol of mine back then. A friend of mine, Joel Brooks, is in this film as well.
If the story make new character, I think it's so great and interested by young generation, coz according my reading of this story were very sweet and softly in love😘😘😘😘
Beautiful performance. It's really amusing how hard they try to convince us it's all about equality. When however you play it, it's still a misogynistic play.
Exactly it's about completely crushing her spirit and remaking her into what he wants by torment. She learned only to go along with everything he said and never cross him.
This has always been my favorite direction of the play. This is my favorite Streep. Too bad that after this she opened her cesspool mouth and turned political. We pay you to act. Shut up and act.
I am so impressed by Meryl's commitment to throwing a temper tantrum.
Raul Julia didn't know she would spit in his face and he licked it. They're both the best actors of their generation and if Raul Julia didn't die so early more people would notice.
Raul Julia's acting is a damn force of nature.
My God...that moment at the end of her monologue in which he takes her hand and kisses her palm while she caresses his hair with her other hand is positively breathtaking.
I thought the same ❤️

OMG, how I would like to had the chance to meet this man!
Life is so unfair, I was born at the same year he left this world...=/
Hehehehe, i was born a year after his death
he died 3 days before i was born. life is indeed unfair.
He definitely would've eventually got the oscar

1978 -- I was 13 and I remember it vividly.
Brilliant and so sexy. Thank you for posting it. I've been searching for this for decades, since I saw it on PBS back in the 70s.
Bravo Raul Julia. 👏🏻
This is a gift. Thank you, Ken.

Well done, Terrific performance by all.

22 minutes in….there’s a Powerful monologue by the great Meryl Streep.
Wow wow wow. We are about to do this play in my school and i severely underestimated the story or it’s meaning.
I love this play. As fucked up as this seems at the beginning it's beautiful once you realize they're perfect for each other.
No. He sees her as his property.
No, he doesn’t. She is a spoiled brat and he motivates her to change.
@@57andstillkicking no he doesn’t.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR POSTING!!!!! It's great to finally see the whole documentary!

Dear wonderful Meryl and Shakespeare a marriage made in heaven
Damn Meryl Streep was a freaking Fox back in the day
NOT 1974, but 1978, when it was filmed, and released as a video in 1981.
thanks for uploading this :) i wanted to see it for few years and now i am in play as katherina and it is helpful to watch the best actress in the world how she played it

Ah. The sweetness of my youthful personality. Ha ha ha ha ha.
A treasure!:)
Merly Streep allahım sen nasıl bir oyuncusun yaa
Amazing
Julia had already played Macheath and was just 4 years away from Guido Contini. Ageless.
Oh he's imitating meryl
Who are the couple in the audience around 4:55? I'm sure I recognise them from somewhere.
why is no one talking about the couple at 4:30?? lmao
Medooo da Meryl em 1:20
How old was Meryl in this play… Jesus 😍😍😍
32.
7:26 ♥️
Who is that pretty girl playing Kate? She could be a star.
Flash in the pan-will never amount to anything.....
she is and she's an award-winning actress
One of them one hit wonders, wonder what she’s doing now , hope she’s doing well 😢😢
That part at 20:57 😆
Beautiful performance. It's really amusing how hard they try to convince us it's all about equality. When however you play it, it's still a misogynistic play.
Not at all- Kate is called a shrew for a reason.
@@57andstillkicking and that reason is...?
@Janna Badalyan She is a spoiled brat that is physically and verbally abusive to everyone and every thing around her.
Exactly it's about completely crushing her spirit and remaking her into what he wants by torment. She learned only to go along with everything he said and never cross him.
1:13 cancer freakout
11:44 ♥️
i saw a performance of this play at the globe in london recently and i have to say, it paled terribly in comparison to this.
It's 1981, not 1974
From
Is this an objectively different play than Taming of the Shrew
Well she learnt a lesson
Give me Taylor and Burton any day!!!
