I'm a retired Captain from TWA, American Airlines. I have over 10 thousand hours of flying time in the MD-80. This video brought back many good memories. This was a good airplane, and probably much safer than many of these fly-by-wire computerized aircraft they're building now. Thanks for the detailed video.

That MD-87 is an antique. Look at the support pillars around the cockpit windows. These are tough old birds that have given decades of top notch service.

That depth of engineering and attention is astounding for its era. I can understand why this pilot is so passionate about showing us all the fine details of this masterpiece of engineering. You can appreciate how McDonnell Douglas as well as other aerospace companies could send people into space and return them home safely, just 2 decades after the end of WW2. Incredible. So glad to have flown on one of these planes before they all disappear..

I retired from Mc Donnell Douglas Long Beach worked on the MD 80 line until it ended with the 717 formally known as the MD 95, It was sad to see the long history of building commercial aircraft in California end, it was a truly wonderful place to work until we merged with BOEING. This is one of the best videos I’ve seen kudos to the Captain an F/O for fantastic video!

Great great great AirClips! With the "broken screen" "Gem of videos" you made me suscribe and follow you. Thank You. Really. Also, let me add, that in this video (maybe because of the short distance from the cockpit to ground), it´s noticeable the high speed at which jets land. Thank you Again.

    Bloody Brilliant!
I'm relatively sure I'm one of the few, which genuinely like the cozy Cockpit Feel along with the older gauge and switch layout Avionics. I would love to pilot one of these. I suppose it would help if I would have ever been capable if being a Pilot. Diabetes put the kibosh on those plans.
However, my father was a Pilot in the Airforce and my Uncle Piloted his twin engine Aircraft around Texas and up to Utah now and again.
Absolutely love this Channel. They never fail in their contributions.

    “Memories are made of this”......
One mistake he did make was saying the “dial a flap setting” permitting a selection of as small as a tenth of a degree was only found on MD87s. Actually it was first developed on the DC-10-10 and later models. For a given runway length, more flaps lowers stall speeds which requires less runway to get to takeoff speed. This permits greater takeoff weights. But increased flaps lowers climb performance. So by finding where these two performance (runway vs climb performance) lines cross results in a optimum flap setting. So by being able to select flaps to the nearest tenth of a degree you get every pound of takeoff weight for a given runway length, field altitude, temperature, & wind condition. I always wanted to explain that to someone. I developed a chart for determining the flap setting for max takeoff weight for use by the pilots. (It was Dick Bradley’s idea (Laker Airways) and was named “Dicks Diamond”). And I calculated and drew the graph which ended up in the FAA Flight Manual. Of course as computers became more in use, Don Davis (river Fame) developed and wrote a computer program that did the optimizing digitally with a printout. So in stead of having to read charts, the pilots had a book of all the runways printed out for different temperatures. Neat, huh 🤔?
