Is everything alright?
For those curious on some backstory on these machines:
The Aluminium PowerBook was actually given to me in a zip lock bag, completely torn to bits. I did my best to re assemble it although I didn't have any spare parts to get it working again.
The PowerBook G4 was given to me by an Apple collector a few years back and I never had the right OS to install on it. (You can see by the PowerMac G5 Install DVD). The machine has passed through at least three repair shops in its time, so must have had a very loving owner.
It's truly wonderful to see the G4 brought back to its prime, you did an awesome job restoring it!

Interestingly, this was also not the right screen for it - the font underneath was only used on the 867 and 1ghz G4 TiBooks - the 667/800's still used Apple Garamond. They're the same resolution though, so no big deal.

In 2002 I think my desktop PC had 2GB RAM (4 x 512MB PC3200) on an Abit NF7-S 2.0 with an overclocked XP1700+ tbred b @ 2.3GHz (I think) & if I wasn’t using that system as my main rig then it would have been a tbird 1000 axia-y @ 1333MHz on an old via kt133a chipset based mobo with 1GB crucial memory (2 x 512MB PC133)

No integrated webcam, probably no integrated antennas for wireless, different lighting method for the display, no light sensor, much thicker lid, noticeable lip between the bezel and the display.
You can get thinner bezels for modern laptops, but given the level of tech it's usually better to make them slightly thicker. You also need to remember that the PowerBook G4 was an exception and started at AU$5500 -- I had a Celeron laptop back in 2005 and the bezels were at least 2.5cm thick all around, which was not uncommon for the time.
Such a modern looking machine for something so old. Even down to the bezels and looks of the OS!
In the early 2000's Apple was about a decade ahead in terms of its hardware and software design. The fit and finish was far beyond any existing PC manufacturer.

It is amazing how much computer specifications have improved since 2002. Way back in 2002 one gigabyte of RAM was considered huge! Now top end Mac books have up to 16 gigabytes of RAM. And 16 gigabytes hard drive space is nothing today. As most good quality laptops today have around 256 gigabytes of hard drive space. And most modern hard drives are solid state ones.
I own a Titanium G4 myself, G4s still looks great over 17 years later ;)
I've got the 15" Powerbook G4 and it still fires up though its incredibly slow. Still looks great though.

I reaaaaally like the 12 inch PowerBook... There's something about them
Yes, always loved them as well, so I got the fastest 1.5 GHz model. Like others in the G4 line, it was slow even for the time, and unlike them, it runs hot as hell, the fan screams and the (new) battery only lasts 90 minutes. The aluminium casing got bent in normal use. It runs neither a modern OS nor OS 9, and Tiger has no killer apps. But it's still nice to have somehow, and I fire it up all the time, and get work done.
I have the 867 12” and an 867 version of the machine Nathan showed in the vid. Dear God the 12” is slow. I think its the lack of L3 Cache on all 12” that kills the performance. Mine also revs the fan and gets hot too. Its cute, but the Titanium is way better.
@@aegonthedragon7303 I guess the L3 cache makes up for the criminally slow (167MHz tops) bus on these machines. Never had one with L3, I do have a lovely 17" iMac that is a similar disappointment at 1GHz. The core is all right, it just constantly gets choked up.
Is it the luxo lamp iMac? The G5 iMacs still are “decent” machines on 10.5, 10.4 would be much better, as my dual core G5 runs rather well for its age on Tiger
@@aegonthedragon7303 yeah, it's the lamp. I lucked out on a near-mint one for 50$. Beautiful machine, but not very quick. I also have the G5 iMac which as you say is more than decent in performance, but otherwise quite boring!
I recently restored a couple of these machines. They haven’t aged all that well, since in addition to paint chipping, I also had the problem with the plastic frame coming unglued from the titanium panels. But they are very nice machines to use and shockingly cheap on eBay if you keep an eye out for a few days. I got some “non-working” ones for almost nothing and all I had to do to get them to boot was disconnect the PRAM battery
The Aqua interface looks so beautiful. I wish newer Macs stuck to that style.

I used a laptop from 2007 up until last year.
I bought 15 inch PowerBook G4 off EBay last year running Mac OS 10.1. I like booting it up for Nostalgia and I have a playlist with songs from 2000 to 2001. It takes me back in time.
watching with Modern Warfare in the background whilst waiting for the servers connect makes this video so much more epic due to the background music haha
I would like to see an upgrade of these old computers, like removing that old dvd drive and replace it with a faster ssd, that would be a great upcoming video.
Edgar Estrada I like your idea, but I have to tell you that a SSD Upgrade wouldn’t make a big difference because of the slow SATA Connection with only 1,5 Gbits... modern Laptops does have much faster Connections to the hard drives!
iMirco97 This laptop is even a bit older-no SATA here, but good old IDE. So the best one can do is to fit an SD card via a CompactFlash adapter. Speed improvements won't be huge in any case.
A long time ago these laptops had no issue with youtube, I remember using the original youtube on the 1Ghz version if this exact laptop. These things get really HOT, as well. Not surprise it still works all thing considered. These were actually very good machines, with the exception they were known for having weak hinges.

Great find! Nice video! I had a TiBook around 2002 and that thing was so far ahead of its time. Most other notebooks of that era look primitive in comparison. It STILL looks modern and sleek enough to pass today. The only issue with that design was the surface coating peeled badly off parts of the tiBook. I had mine for 10 years and by the end it looked a mess even tho it still functioned fine.
Great video. I still have my 2001 Titanium PowerBook. I boot it up every once and a while and play Quake and Tony Hawk. Those old PowerBooks are great.
Something that I do adore of the Ti Book is that the latest Silicon MacBook Pro units based much of their design on it. Such as the pure black keyboard, boxy frame, thin bezels, and clean design.

This was the first Mac I bought after graduating and starting my graphic design career, and scalded my own lap from the heat this beast throws out.
I left mine behind in an apartment in Los Angeles around 2010. I'm gonna pretend this is my my old Mac you lovingly restored!
The bezels on the Powerbook G4 were actually quite impressive. Seems like the Macbook Air from 2011 had 2-3x larger bezels. Great video!

I really miss this period in Apple's design. This Powerbook and the 1GHZ Models were two of my favs and I absolutely loved them and used them till I couldn't any longer. I still have a 1GHZ G4 Model and a Dual 1GHZ G4 Tower in my basement that I keep for when I need to do video transfers from older video hardware.

It's not that difficult, learning by doing is the best way to get in touch with repairs. Just get some old tech stuff and Check out what's inside.
It's interesting and also a lot of fun to bring old tech back to life.
Always loved the Titanium Powerbook G4, really interesting material to use in a laptop. Fantastic video!
If you consider the TiBook following up the PowerBook G3 Pismo, then you can see how much of an innovation this laptop was. It basically still is the mold for the current MacBook lineup. I never owned a TiBook, but did own a Pismo and later on a 17" PowerBook 1Ghz G4.

I do like laptops that have a good design and have all of its color uniform. That is having the laptop in only one color.

Great job... But please consider upgrading to a better paste than Arctic Silver 5. There are so many better options now, Kryonaut, IC Diamond, Gelid GC Extreme etc and none of those are capacative like AS5 is.

Wow! It looks great for a 2002 laptop, back in 2002 I was still using a Windows 98 Toshiba laptop that has aged terribly.
I remember selling these back in 2002. It blew may mind someone had that much money to spend on a computer.

I still have my 12" Powerbook G4 2nd gen and a immaculate Titanium Powerbook. I can't really do anything with it but they are a beautiful piece of engineering.
Seeing Halo run like that reminded me of playing the game on my Thinkpad X31, very similar performance

I had one like this laptop many years ago. That was really cool thing. G4 800mhz, 256mb ram, 120gb hdd (installed by myself), I've sold it in 2012 for $150.
The Titanium PowerBook is such a great looking machine even today.
Looks like the PowerBook G4 titanium design influenced the later MacBook designs, with the brushed sliver colour and black keyboard.
I love these old tech repairs and i really love the eucalyptus oil.

I had one of these TI powerbooks only mine was a 1ghz processor with one gb of ram. I still say it was the nicest looking laptop Apple ever put out.

WD40 for sticker residue also works a charm. Can also bring back old fans from the dead, just squirt it inside the motor and give it a spin and clean 👍

That Titanium G4 would be a great candidate for running that commercial Playstation 1 emulator that came out just a year or two prior to laptop’s release. I remember it ran great even on my G3 iMac at the time.

How funny. I just bought one of those same PowerBook G4 Titaniums for $40 on Facebook Marketplace. Mine is the normal high trim model, selling for $3200 USD, with the 800 MHz G4 and 512 MB of RAM. Definitely pretty awesome though.

Paid £2,500 for mine in 2002. And it still works perfectly. For what it runs, it would still be properly usable.

I have a 1GHz model in my collection. It still works but takes a lot of effort to get it started- typical PowerBook failing RAM slots I believe. The battery still lasts a few hours of using the laptop, as well! I've had to replace both hinges at different times- very difficult, as the display assembly is glued shut and not serviceable.

I have the same Powerbook G4 12", its work fine, but because of the actual apps, I use it as a server from media, because it cand hold a lot of devices on demand without delay, those are models when apple was great.
Is silver polish safe to use on the Mac Pros? I have a 2012 with some scuff marks I'd love to get looking better! Also what is your watch? It's dope af!
I gave one of these away for recycling last year. It was in almost perfect, clean condition. It had a minor dent on one corner.
Bought one of those Titanium G4s off of ebay back in 2010. It was a fantastic laptop for three days. Was listed as 100% working, mint condition. Thing had the letter H burned all into the screen all over, no idea how. The battery pins were disconnected from the motherboard. After four days of use, plugged it into power and it immediately caught on fire with a lot of smoke coming up from under the keyboard. I had to throw it out of my window into a snowbank on the road at the end of my yard.
I then yanked the hard drive and hinges off of it as they were in good condition still and dropped it's corpse off at the local recycling centre with an "Electrical Fire" notice so no one else would grab it

Back in the day, I do remember buying an HP Pavillion laptop in July of 2002. It had a 1.4 ghz Pentium 4m cpu with 256 mb ram and a 20 gb hard drive with Windows XP service pack 0 rtm.
That mac is what got me hooked on Apple. Was very jealous of my university friends with them, until I got the first 17" Powerbook (which got very hot!)

These old style macbooks are ridiculously modular compared to today's where everything is considered a logic board repair that costs over 700$. Truly a far cry from today's designs for sure. You really did get your money's worth back then
That should run 9.2.2 natively, but finding original install disks will be a challenge as it must be for that exact model year. I almost gave up finding a set for my model A1025 1GHz Ti G4, my "OK, final look on eBay" found a set posted minutes before with buy it now option at a great price. If you're thinking of 9.2.2 I wish you luck in finding the disks.
