The woman you liked at 20:40 was sci-fi goddess Claudia Black. If you want to see more of her you should watch Farscape, a sci-fi show from the late 90's that deconstructs many of the often seen tropes of sci-fi shows. A real gem, made by the Jim Henson Corporation, who if you don't don't, did the Muppets. You will laugh, you will cry, you will wonder at amazement at this 4 season and 1 movie ride. It will forever change your view of the sci-fi genre.
Farscape si FANTASTIC and it deserve more love. It's Sci Fi, it's space, it's spaceships, it's war, it's aliens it's different planet, but... it's NOT set in the future, it's in the 2000's and the main (human) character makes all references to our culture (and the aliens look at him confused).
I'll die on the hill that this is Diesel's greatest character to date.. sure, supercars, vroom, vroom, alla that - but Riddick is Riddick at the end of the day.
Claudia Black. The actress who plays the black hair lady is great in both in Stargate SG1 and Farscape, and this is her 1st movie. Always been a TV actress prior.
I hadn't seen any _Farscape_ at the time and I guess hadn't rewatched this movie since I did. I thought that was her but also thought maybe someone similar looking, since she had a fairly small role compared to her main cast status on a multi-season sci-fi show, and this being a fairly low-budget film.
Vin Diesel actually owns the rights to the Riddick character which is damn cool, the fourth movie is confirmed but who knows when it may come out. I look forward to it though.

Insanely underrated movie, and quite honestly I like all the other Riddick movies as well. But still to this day I haven't really seen anything else like this one. And yes, the original Escape from Butcher Bay game was surprisingly great, and gives you some interesting backstory into the character (it takes place before the events of Pitch Black).
Same and same :). This kind of "necessity is the mother of invention" indie sci-fi is very much my thing (maybe why for me this is the best one, then 3 then 2).
Cube! That is one from the past. I loved that movie as well. There was also Cube 2, but Id have to watch that one again to remember it. You just gave me something to do today!
@31:13 I'm pretty sure Riddick was actually supposed to leave them, because his whole M.O. is to survive, and he's not really supposed to be a hero. He thinks strategically what's best for him. Earlier he went back for the little girl because he wants her to live but more importantly he gaged that he had a very good chance to kill that thing (so good of a chance that he actually killed it without a single injury!). However going back for the group in the cave meant fighting a large swarm, and he knew he had no chance at that, so there was no sense in his mind of him dying with them. So yeah, he was actually going to leave. BUT when the chick made a stand that she would THIS time be willing to die for them, it piqued his interest. For him, he's now suddenly looking at a girl who was, like himself, selfish enough to let others die for herself but now is showing new character growth, a nobility and even a redemption. This interested him, because if she has hope of virtue, then HE has hope as well, maybe HE can grow too. That's why at the end he screams at her sacrifice "Not for me...!", for the holy man maybe, for the kid yes, but for a killer? A man who would've left them behind? No, not for that. Really loved your reaction to this awesome film! You guys picked a good one. As for the sequel, it's...meh. Entertaining distraction, but nothing special, imo not even necessary. BUT the 3rd one brings it back to it's roots! That was a good one, ya gotta watch it! To answer your question there is no comic book but there is an animation! (which is basically just a moving comic book aye?). They drew him a little thin but I thought it was cool, albeit hyper stylish. Put that on the channel too if you watch it 🙂
> _"Riddick was actually supposed to leave them"_ Yup. To assume otherwise is to rob the next few scenes of their meaning. Similarly, if Fry made it out alive, she would've had the cake and eaten it: the glory of asserting she'd be willing to sacrifice herself but without the necessity to actually pay that price.
Please watch Chronicles of Riddick and don't listen to the haters! It's a fun a sci-fi action movie, and has some great world-building in it. (If you can find it anywhere, the animated short Dark Fury comes in between and bridges the two movies.) Thanks for watching this, it's one of my favorite franchises!
Chronicles of Riddick is just very amusing to me because this movie is so self-contained, whereas Chronicles creates this massive, galaxy-spanning mythology with a lot of kind of weird stuff that isn't as simple as "there are monsters on this planet" haha. It's definitely worth watching, I just don't know if it's as thoroughly good as _Pitch Black_ . There is also a fair amount more campiness in Karl Urban and Thandie Newton's characters, which just adds to the tone shift away from horror survival.
This is one of my favorite films and definitely one of my favorite characters. I'm so glad to see that y'all reacted to this and shared most of my favorite parts on RUclips. So grateful for this today!
The sequel "The Chronicles of Riddick" gives a lot more of his background and how he became what he is. If you watch it make sure you watch the directors cut as the theatrical version cut a lot of important stuff out
Even though he appeared in Saving Private Ryan two years earlier, this was the movie that catapulted Vin Diesel's career. I have loved this movie since it released and I can't believe it's 25 years old. 😮
Claudia before the blonde hair is, for my money, one of the most beautiful women the planet. Together with Eva Green. Despite Claudia her nose being too big and Eva her eyes bulging. Something about them does it for me.
Still Vin Diesel's best character. Just remember to watch the extended director's cut for the second and third movies if you're doing a reaction for them. You also need to watch The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury anime before watching the second movie Chronicles of Riddick (yeah, the titles of this series are confusing)
My biggest issue with "Chronicles" was so much backstory that was not included in the theatrical cut. It ended up being a muddled mess. Dark Fury and the extended cut might change my mind, if I get the chance to see them.
@slimmccoy8863 yeah they dumb down the second and third movies for the theatrical release from line changes to erasing Riddick's backstory, making him of a generic action hero.
This movie is such a gem of modern cinema with its original idea. A protagonist that's an anti-hero? Female MC that you thought would survive? 30 minutes in the movie turned from sci-fi action thriller into a creature feature. Brilliant writing, brilliant characters. Please react to Chronicles of Riddick too. It expands the universe into a space opera genre which is very different from this one but still fun.
Escape From Butcher Bay is actually excellent. It's a first-person game where you play Riddick attempting to escape from a prison colony. There are lots of (for then) innovative elements, and even something of a morality system. It might be hard to track down, but Vin was HEAVILY involved in the production, and lends his likeness and does the VO for Riddick.
@theaikidoka Assault on Dark Athena came out in 2009 and is a direct sequel to Butcher Bay. Extremely good sequel, too. You should try to play it if you get the chance.
Thank you, universe, someone has finally reacted to this one. I've been recommending it to reactors for years. Thank you, Maplenuts. There is definitely a reason why I am subscribed to you two. Maybe one day 'Screamers' (1995) will also get a watch from RUclips ;D And you should also consider 'Battlestar Galactica' miniseries. Which will turn into the whole series reaction. But the miniseries is a nice three-hour-long entryway into the universe.

Therefore Universal Pictures gave an enormous budget to Twohy for a sequel. Fast forward, due to strikes and other shenanigans Pitch Black 2 - aka The Chronicles of Riddick - became a forgotten project for Universal, so they went to see Twohy about it. He stated: "Yeah it's been finished a while ago, so I was doing other stuff in the meantime. I also need to give you back all the money I didn't use." That was because Twohy had only worked small budget movies and didn't need such a large sum to make the movie he wanted. Now yes, 2004's TCoR is bigger ... MUCH bigger. He tried to create his own DUNE universe with lore and everything (if you watch it I suggest you watch the Director's Cut .. a bit longer and better cut). It unfortunately didn't convince most of the audience, especially not as a sequel. It's pretty much a stand-alone flick. I personally like it a lot, just because it's a cool SciFi movie and I manage to make abstraction from the first one. Then came RIDDICK in 2013, and what can I say, it's pretty much a reboot of Pitch Black - but even better (bigger budget) with a great supporting cast. Probably the best of all three.
Thanks for sharing another one I like. I wasn't aware of Vin Diesel until seeing this in the theater. I had previously seen Radha Mitchell, Keith David and, Cole Hauser in other projects .
Amazing gem from the 2000's. I remember my best friend lent me the DVD and i loved it right away, such a cool stylistic movie. I can see many movies taking inspirations from this one.
Oh, I've always dug this movie, and the next one, too. Fun, and Graeme Revell's score for both films is a treat in and of itself. Thank you for reacting to it!
I am glad someone likes the movie. It wasnt the best but it is an enjoyable movie as well as the entire serie is. Thank you for reacting to it, I hope we will see more Riddick movies in here :)
To be snobbish for a moment... most Sci-Fi movies are action movies with a sci-fi paint job. Occasionally, you get a horror movie (like Alien). But this one, if you had a genre would be "survival", which isn't really a movie genre. The aliens are a constant threat, but not enough to be horror. The main enemy (apart from people always being their own worse enemy) is the ways in which the alien world is different from what they expect and are used to and them learning to deal with that - it's basically the Martian with much tighter time constraints. This is just a "sci-fi" movie, and you don't get many of those.
I'd say _indie_ sci-fi tends to be more "sci-fi"y at least partly because they don't have the money for big action set pieces. So this, "Primer" (as I _think_ you mention :), "The Man from Earth", "Moon" and more recently "The Vast of Night" and "The Artifice Girl" as examples - in some cases _incredibly_ low budget which tends to make them more ideas driven "bottle" movies with a lot of talking ("talk is cheap" as they say :). (and "survival" is _absolutely_ a movie genre BTW, or subgenre at least - "The Martian" is survival/sci-fi as will be "Project Hail Mary" when it comes out then there's stuff like "Cast Away", "The Road", "The Grey", an old fave of mine called "Flight of the Phoenix" etc.)
There’s other films in this universe. There’s an anime that takes place right afterward, the Chronicles of Riddick which is years later, and Riddick which is years later after that. Some video games as well.
Pitch Black and Riddick are both very good. They have similar environments. The Chronicles of Riddick is an acquired taste that I don’t like, which is nothing like the other 2 movies.
The movie after this one is Dark Fury. It's an animated short, but it has a couple of the actors doing their voices. The third movie is The Chronicles of Riddick (2004), and that movie is great. Hope you watch the next two movies.
The game Escape from Butcher Bay comes before Pitch Black in the timeline and deals a lot with the past encounters of Riddick and Johns (the merc). The game Dark Athena is what happens immediately after this film and years before the second (Chronicles of Riddick) and is about what happened when they got found and 'rescued' by not great folks.
So Cole the actor playing the bounty hunter is currently most known for the show Yellowstone but he is also a Fast and Furious alumni. He was the main bad guy in 2fast 2furious
Be sure not to overlook 'Dark Fury' if you decide to watch all the Riddick movies. It was an animated short made between this film and the next in order to bridge the gap. Beautifully animated by Peter Chung of Aeon Flux fame.
I hope you continue watching the franchise. Yes, Pitch Black is probably the best overall movie since it's not overly complex, but Chronicles of Riddick is still fun because of the lore, universe building, and...well...set design. I do think it suffers from cramming so much into a limited time frame and building too much too fast, but I still enjoy it a lot.
Loved the Pitch Black movie. As someone who is into 40k and their Death Worlds, this is one SCARY planet. This IMO is Vin Diesel best roll to date. Thanks and been watching for a while. Sub earned!
Saw this in the theatre when it came and still think the opening is fantastic. Fun movie overall. Big fan of Chronicles of Riddick because I love me some mythology rich Sci- fi nonsense. A friend was a production carpenter on the Vancouver made Chronicles and helped build the 3 story sets.
Most shocking is that you are aware of Mortal Combat and the fatality move(s) therein, considering I'm sure you were just a glint in your father's eye when that game came out. Kudos.
Some 90's suggestions - Split Second with Rutger Hauer, TimeCop with Jean-Claude Van Damme, Fortress (1992) with Christopher Lambert and Soldier with Kurt Russell. For more recent - Dredd with Karl Urban, The Creator, Chappie and Elysium.
I remember seeing the animated movie too. It’s called Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury. There’s mixed feelings towards it, but I think it was a fun movie to watch
This is how you take inspiration from films like Alien while letting it be its own thing. Two more movies I recommend from David Twohy: The Arrival (1996) and Below (2002).
there are two great live action sequels to this The Chronicles of Riddick 2004 and Riddick 2013 with a third on the way Furya probably later this year there are also some cartoons/anime and comics
The game is made by basically the same team that made the recent Indiana Jones game. Technically a different developer, but a lot of the core of that team left that team and formed the Indiana Jones team. They share a lot of game design. It's the first really great game I ever played that felt like it was a part of the same universe as the films. It was produced by Diesel's own production company so it makes sense I suppose.

Dark Fury is a must!
Then, Chronicles of Riddick!!
"Looks clear." has been a joke among my friends and I ever since this movie came out, really enjoy this flick!
the whole Riddick saga is epic....keep going it gets better
David Twohy's "Below" is another totally overlooked film.
Well worth checking out!
Escape from Butcher Bay is fantastic. It's essentially a prequal to this story and explains how Riddick gets his eyes shined.
Assault on Dark Athena is a sequel to that game and it's also very good. 👍
the chronicles of Riddick is a must follow up
To be snobbish for a moment... most Sci-Fi movies are action movies with a sci-fi paint job.
"Gattaca" comes to mind as a sci-fi film that's heavy on the sci-fi, with very little action/horror.
@@slimmccoy8863Would you consider David Cronenberg's Videodrome (1983) SciFi Horror? One of my favorite movies.
@@slimmccoy8863 Yes, another very good example. You also have lower budget stuff, like Prime.
(and "survival" is _absolutely_ a movie genre BTW, or subgenre at least - "The Martian" is survival/sci-fi as will be "Project Hail Mary" when it comes out then there's stuff like "Cast Away", "The Road", "The Grey", an old fave of mine called "Flight of the Phoenix" etc.)
this movie was filmed in australia in winter. it's actually cold and the cast was freezing lol
Love this movie. Riddick is such a great character.
I think you guys would really enjoy Strange Days. I've suggested it before but it is really worth watching even if you don't do it for your channel.
The Adventures of Riddic, Part two of this is even better.
Happy New Year Chandra and Jordan🎉🎉
Riddick is a bad ass!!! But makes me feel really old that this movie is 25 years old now. Where does the time go?! Thanks for the reaction
"Soldier" from 1998 is another good science fiction film with a bad-ass misfit central character.
Batman vs Riddick.
Batman does not know who he is fucking with 😅
So Cole the actor playing the bounty hunter is currently most known for the show Yellowstone but he is also a Fast and Furious alumni.
I don't know why more people don't know about this movie. It made me a huge Vin Diesel fan.
So glad you did this one.
If you're doing reaction to more Riddick movies, the next one is not Chronicles of Riddick, it's the cartoon Dark Fury.
Keep those thoughts for Halloween. Lots of people will recognize Reddick. Mrs you could be the pilot.
Now you have to watch the rest of the Riddick trilogy! Both of them are good. Theres a new one releasing in 2025.
I absolutely love this series. It put Vin on the map.
Loved the Pitch Black movie. As someone who is into 40k and their Death Worlds, this is one SCARY planet. This IMO is Vin Diesel best roll to date.
Thanks and been watching for a while. Sub earned!
"Escape from Butcher Bay" is such a great game!
Assault on Dark Athena as well if you have a chance and have not played. 👍
The second movie, The Chronicles of Riddik is my guilty pleasure movie.
They wanted Riddick to be good so badly... I wonder if they saw training day... 😁
Don't forget the animated short film Dark Fury.
If a power cell is 35kg, then Riddick was pulling the weight of two men.
What is there to say...great movie...nothing but a classic!
OMG I found someone else who likes Soldier!? No one else seems to know it exists.
I remember seeing the animated movie too. It’s called Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury. There’s mixed feelings towards it, but I think it was a fun movie to watch
Lights REALLY needed to be off for this, imo. It really enhances things when the lights go out.
Reactors are very conformist creatures. They see what other reactors watch, and how they watch it, and they do the same.
This is how you take inspiration from films like Alien while letting it be its own thing.
Two more movies I recommend from David Twohy: The Arrival (1996) and Below (2002).
Batman vs Riddick needs to be a movie.
there are two great live action sequels to this The Chronicles of Riddick 2004 and Riddick 2013 with a third on the way Furya probably later this year there are also some cartoons/anime and comics
I forgot that officer Aeryn Sun was in this 🙂
The game is made by basically the same team that made the recent Indiana Jones game. Technically a different developer, but a lot of the core of that team left that team and formed the Indiana Jones team. They share a lot of game design. It's the first really great game I ever played that felt like it was a part of the same universe as the films. It was produced by Diesel's own production company so it makes sense I suppose.
Welcome to Riddick-ulous-dom. Awesome character!
