This repair will work for our situation. In preparation, what can be used to prop upper stringer into place? Thank you

I would attach a piece of lumber under the stringer and for safety, no body uses the stairs until repair is completed.

I have a similar situation and the stringers are beginning to slide down.
Would you suggest a similar repair? Or jack up the staircase and add a couple posts to the ground.

If you can, lift into the proper position and reattach or use supports like you suggested.

Where did you buy the foundation straps? Found the plate ones but not so much for the long straps that will bend.

I don't offer product recommendations, for liability reasons, but can suggest going down to your local home improvement center or lumberyard and they should be able to provide you with a long strap.

How would you do a repair when the top of the stair stringer has cracked on a diagonal because there was a 1/4" gap between the Framing Headout and the stringer? (stringer was in a Simpson hanger with the bottom strap)
    A) replace the whole stringer
    B) sister the top of the stringer
    C) sister the whole stringer
    D) some other repair
What are the options for this kind of stair defect?
what's the best repair for safety, vs best repair for economics?

I wonder if you could simply drive a wedge in between the stringer and the head out where the gap was and pull everything back together. Or quite possibly use a jack to raise the stringer and then drive some type of a wedge to make everything tight. If this doesn't make sense send me a picture and you can get our email address at the website.

Sadly I decided to rebuild the stringers since the top ear had broken off (I just recently learned that the part of the stringer where the tread and the riser connect was called an ear, that's what broke off on a diagonal). If it was any other ear on the stringer I would have just glued it back on and sistered a board to the ear. With it being the top ear I wasn't sure what to do .
I agree that a shim to fill the gap between the 1/4" gap between the Framing Headout with the metal hanger and the stringer would have been a good direction to go before the ear broke off. With the ear broken off, I wasn't sure what to do next.
so rephrasing my original question... What's the best kind of repair for a stringer when the top connection ear beaks off?
      A) replace the whole stringer
(the option I went with but would like to avoid if possible next time)
      B) sister the top of the stringer
(same as you would for any other ear on the stringer)
      C) sister the whole stringer
(if it is difficult to remove the original stringer)
      D) some other repair

It would all depend upon where the ear as you're referring to broke, but I remember simply nailing them back on and installing the stringer, without sisterisng, but it really would depend upon whether or not the stringer would be structurally sound after it was put back together as to whether or not it should be replaced.
