I don’t blame you for having a few American locomotives in your collection!! Some of them are absolutely gorgeous. But my personal favourites are steam locomotives. My favourite locomotive at the moment is the S160 Class steam locomotive. I’ve actually been behind one of these wartime American locomotives when one visited the Epping Ongar Railway.
A Bachmann without split gears is a good thing because 2 out of every 5 have that problem. I would always pick the Athearn over the Bachmann. Great review, Jersey Bill
I’ve had a couple of Athearn diesels and they were really smooth running engines. Also had a couple of Bachmann steam locomotives during my childhood a 2-8-2 Mikado and the 4-8-4 611 N&W, both really good looking models when I was a kid, but proved to be unreliable over time.
It sounds wonderful!! Having seen the real thing while visiting cousins in Shelbyville, Indiana, I can tell you that the sound quality is EXCELLENT.

The older the model the less realistic it will be. It’s exactly the same with British models. I have a selection of old and new models.
Athearn is 100% better than Bachmann, in my opinion.
Yea they add more detail to their locomotives.
