Beautiful if a little complicated 👍

My late 1990's Fleischmann locos are by far the best-looking and performing models that I operate. They just run forever at a constant speed, regardless of track conditions. Might oil the wheels once every two years and have never had to remove the body work for any repairs or servicing. I operate most of the main European, British and USA brands, except for Marklin.

When a ROCO loco comes with a piece of display track it tells you this is a model with great detail. This however indicates some running problems and very small fragile detail. This model should have at least one pivoted tender axle bogie, also the wires between vehicles and the drive shaft is a source of resistance to running round curves.

Fantastic model. Steam really isn't my thing but I've always had a soft spot for German steam in the no-nonsense red and black livery with all the pipework just running the length of the boiler. 0-10-0 is a great wheel arrangement, too. Might just look for one of these to run around!

Your BR 50 Kab (for Kabinentender, tender with a cabin) is not a niche model in Germany, everybody who wants to sell BR 50 has to have this kind of model. The white painted buffers are not prototypical and had been modified by a previous owner of your model. DB stands for "Deutsche Bundesbahn", the "Deutsche Bahn" came into effect in 1994 incorporating the former Deutsche Bundesbahn (state rail operator of Western Germany) and the former Deutsche Reichsbahn (state rail operator of the former socialist GDR). The cabin in the tender should save shunting a special wagon with accompanying personel, but staff did not like it very much. Fleischmann H0 models with "Rundmotor" (some sort of pancake motor like in your BR 50 here) are usually good crawlers because the motor has a fully enclosing stator magnet, the rotor forces leverage is far better than those in a slim turbo motor often used in current models and mostly they do not employ consuming worm drives. However, there are sets to remotorize Fleischmann steam locomotives e.g. from SB Modellbau. Fleischmann was the first manufacturer of tender-driven models at least in Western Europe.

These have great detail even for todays standard. My dad had one it was my favourite because it has not traction tires and it very realistic to pull a train up the slope with just a little wheel spin. Fun memories. If they would relaunch it in digital sound with a more modern motor i would buy it . The ESU 94 is nice but too expensive.

Fleischmann (meanwhile merged with Roco, with Fleischmann producing N scale models, while Roco does HO scale now. Both firms have taken over the respective scale model tooling from the other. So you will find some Fleischmann locos in Roco packaging now.) has always been a forerunner in model steam locomotives. It might surprise you, but this model was first produced in 1978 and was part of the range until the early 1990s at least. So this would be 30+ years old.

Love it! Former Prussian G 8.1 if I remember correctly, later DRG 55. I think that the Swedish State Railway bought 20 of these back in day. I might have had one of these as well, I remember that my dad had a fair few Piko steam locomotives....

I'm a Canadian Army brat and was stationed in Lahr, Germany from 1978 to 1982. There was an excellent hobby shop in town and I got their Fleischmann catalog every year. Most of my set was bought in Canada and as a young boy I could not afford any of the gorgeous Fleishmann stuff, although I did get a lovely transformer one year for Christmas and some bits of rolling stock through the years there. Such fond memories!

Superb and iconic brands like Fleischmann and Märklin, are completely ignored in the English spoken world.

This is an interesting model. I wouldn't be tempted as I predominantly model DCC models. If you could get an image of the cab detail, you could stick this in the cab against the rear glazing to hide the motor.

From a period when most wagons had no vacuum or air brakes and required manual wagon brake operation. The brakeman or team of men for a large train used a brake van or earlier still, individual huts on wagons, to adjust braking (when train stationery). The van for brakemen was not at the rear of the train, as UK, but at the front, behind the loco. This loco tender would accommodate a few such brake men for the trains wagons, though not as spacious or equipped as a brake van. The brakemen would also be tasked with coupling wagons, point and signaling adjustment for shunting maneuvers.

The top of the box is correct but the foam part is not. Power distribution: main pickups are on the locomotive, tender chassis is also live but that will only work in corners due to the traction tires (see the pickup at 5:04) As is the standard with Fleischmann, the chassis is used as the return for the lamps, and in case of this one for the motor as well (old style brush holder at 6:30). For DCC conversions, the best spots for the decoder are either the firebox or the tender (cut some height off the weight at the back) The front part has been modified, the coupler bar has been removed and the buffers should have white rings instead of being all white 2:10 The cabin on these is a separate part that is glued / clipped to the boiler to allow different cab and boiler styles 2:34 Einheitsloks use a screw reverser, that is the control wheel 2:47 Later versions have a lot finer running gear (and are sold with the same article number) 3:30 That is not totally correct,. Having the train guard on the locomotive allows for adding an extra car (brake force calculation) as you end up with a zero length guard van. These were not that much liked by the personnel, as they were damp and cold, even with the heated bench, as you were sitting inside the water tank. To reduce the impact on water capacity the tender body was extended to cover the toolbox that usually sits on the back. 4:12 These usually have welded bodies instead of riveted ones so it is correct 5:01 The transparent ones are the older type, but as the rear wheel isn't driven there isnt much of a difference. 5:43 These work on R1 curves (360mm radius), there is a lot of sideways movement in the chassis 7:42 The overspill on most Fleischmann tenders is functional, as it hides some of the gearbox

Ridiculously overpriced locos have become, i can't afford them, i get things off eBay after they are a couple of years old 👍.

I have a Roco version of the “Metropolitan” locomotive which I picked up over 20 years ago thinking how good it will look with it’s coaches and never seeing a “metropolitan” coach until this year and then nearly having a heart attack when I found out how much they were going to cost. 😭😭😭

lol please bear in mind that this exact loco is a tooling from the late 80's. How do I know this? Had the exact same model which came as part of a Hornby train set called 'Motor Rail' which I got as a present, in the late 80's! 😃

The speaker is powered by a 9V battery, the red switch turns the sound on/off and the dial on the bottom of the tender controls volume.

The TRIX HABBINS sliding wall wagon I have in Swiss postal colours has a feature that the wheel bogies each have 3 positions on the wagon chassis. This enables its use on tight turns (short wheel base) or very large turns (long wheel base) or something in between. But beware the end throw of the couplings at short wheelbases. It is to be noted that ICE trains sets tend to have 7 coaches + loco (RailJet, NightJet, Swiss ICN, DB ICE 2) or double trains (DB ICE 1, TGV,) though more modern sets like Swiss IC2020 have sets of 10 duplex coach trains and add up to four normal coaches and driving coaches. (+2 loco, top and tail, dependent on route)

For the Metropolitan train, most people won't have to space to run that consist. It's already 210 cm for the coaches alone. The exact same coaches in DC are done by Piko for the same price, as this is a cooperative project between Piko and Märklin

The loco in this video has the standard cab. The other two locos had an experimental cab which provided the crew with additional space and featured glare-reducing. DR only converted a few locomotives.

VEB stands for Volkseigener Betrieb - a term used to denote a State owned manufacturing businesses in East Germany. The letters VEB were placed before the business name.

Is the number the same as on one or both of the other models?

I am glad to see this video. Very interesting models.

Don't use mineral oil on gears or near plasic wheels that are connected to metal axles. The oil will loosen the plastic from metal. Simply use small anounts of silicone- or ceramic grease for lubricating plastic parts. It's a preferred way to prevent plastic gears and wheel centers from becoming detached from metal axles.

Putting an engine back together after a complete strip down is not my idea of fun so I commend you for taking it in your stride without apparently getting stressed.

Considering it is the same age as me and it runs about as well as I do, not bad. The problem with these Italian loco's is the paint colour always looks dirty whether it is or not. I have seen a number of old layouts in which overhead power was the thing to have. Also on the one of the layouts was road traffic following a hidden wire, just like Herpa but 60 tears ago.

It is a shame the black paint beaded on you I guess it reacted to the plastic or something on it. You managed to tear it down a reconstruct it so hats off to you. Great little video and Happy Holidays, Jersey Bill

You mention about not taking photos during the dismantling stage however you have video version rather than stills you could have referred to.

Pity about the lighting problem on the 2nd run, all lighting seems to be the same spec as D9016 with WIPAC lighting meaning all other models will show 4 white lights on the front end, very poor indeed
