This song combines everything that I always carry around in my heart; the emotion, the love of the English language and its poetry, the urgency that music should have, and so much more, the bittersweet pain of a childhood and adolescence forever gone, and above all, honesty and truth, and directness. It still tugs at my heart strings after 20 years. Incredible.

Mark Shaw is one of the most beautiful men I have ever seen. His voice and Then Jerico's music was highly underrated. They deserved more fame and recognition than they got. If
Mark Shaw is reading this...I still fancy you!!!!!

Where there's truth there's poetry...And I will lose myself in you and find myself again. As others have said, this is definitely one of the best songs of the 80s.

turning 51 in July-))) I remember exactly the circumstances when I heard Then Jerico for the first time. I must say I was overwhelmed. After 25 years I still listen to this brilliant album and I will at the age of 60 as well -)))) and I presume I wont be only one.

Wish i lived in the 80s and heard this. Unfortunately i am 20 years old and just heard their music last night.... better late than never i guess. You Oughta Know off their 1989 album hooked me right in! Their chorus in that song, this one and many others are so anthemic!

Being a teenage lad during the 80's bought some Classic Bands, this song sticks out for one reason,a good friend of mine who I went Primary School with who was keen on music like myself introduced me to this song, whenever I hear it it reminds of him,he took his own life a few years ago.....!!!
So this ones for you Chris "Boogy" Bassett...RIP Fella,I/We miss you.

How can 29 people not have liked this? It's one of the greatest 80's songs. You'd have to be deaf (and dumb) not to. Surely disliking it must be against the law? If it's not, it should be. " And within the light that shines from you, I bathe myself" Fantastic.

ECHI's All Time Favorite 100 Songs
    THEN JERICO
"The Motive (Living Without You" 1987
I've been drugfree all my life (and proud of it) but my true addiction is music (the music, the songs, lyrics, tracks, background vocals, etcetera etcetera and collecting). Then Jerico's "THE MOTIVE (LIVING WITHOUT YOU)" is one of my favorite drugs. I'm addicted to this song. It has moved me for 27 years and I st...ill love it as much as I did in 1987. This recording drove me crazy. I would and still play it on repeat over and over and over again. The lyrics and the passion of Mark Shaw's vocals on this recording is sheer bliss to me. Back in the 80's I went nuts over this record. I went out and brought every single 7 inch & 12 inch, album, & cd by them. I even joined their UK Fan Club. On top of all that the video for "THE MOTIVE" is one of my all time favorite video's. Sadly I've never gotten to see them live in concert but hopefully someday (as they still tour). Thank you THEN JERICO for "THE MOTIVE", aka soundtrack of my life. xxx ECHI
