I was 8 at the time.Thrilled with the win, although a bit nervous with the pitch invasion. Still love John Tudor's diving header. Never thought we'd win 4-3,,but also never expected to face Forest again in two more replays. But yes:I thought the game was much better back then, unlike what it is now.
I agree , we never get cup ties like this anymore , no passion , too many divers , too many foreigners ( same thing ) , too much politics, no standing , too much money for players and costs too much to get in the ground, its becoming too expensive for the working man !
13 year old me was stood in the paddock just below the cameras, so this was pretty much my view at the time. Unbelievable game. Also, especially proud of John Tudors diving headed equaliser, as he was my next door neighbour at the time!
As a young Newcastle supporter seeing this footage is just amazing. The way football was played back then looks way more entertaining than what it is today. Supporters actually singing and supporting their team instead of recording it on their phones, really wish I was born in this era.
Following the recent sad death of Toon fanatic and Club employee Paul Tully I have gone back and immersed myself in these matches where we all went along week after week in our youth. I was there, in the Leazes End, an unbelievable day (and there were many in that run - except for the final.......!) I saw the April '74 match winner Bob Moncur kindly attend Paul's funeral last month - lot's of folk there as were many a Newcastle notable, too many to list here and anyway, this is to thank those for posting this and the many matches that have taken me back to some marvellous times in football. Brilliant Forest shirts . Imagine if you were to tell people in 1974 that several of this team were on their way to back to back European cups with one of Newcastle’s players on the team as well
This was the first match I ever attended! Crazy! I was standing close to the tunnel and the dugout! I remember when Leonard Conroy (big fella with three coppers around him) first invaded the pitch....and hundreds followed from the Leazes End....nuts!
I'm a Blackpool fan and can remember this time period pretty well ( thought this was about a pitch invasion ) .....but the pace and speed of this game is staggering!!...fantastic commitment
Frankly one of the greatest games ever. The crosses from Hibbitt & Tudor, one sending off, two penalties and a winner from Moncur who only scored in the most critical matches (FA Youth Cup Final, UEFA Cup Final) ...... police dogs chewing up the yobs from the Leazes. And none of the reports mention that when NUFC finally beat Forest 1-0 in the replay MacDonald got fined £100 by the F.A. for saying "That's 5-3 on aggregate."
@@richardsharpe2966 You can say that again...having called for a replay the FA then refused to allow forest to have a home game. Two games at goodison, first one ended 0-0 before another replay, also at Goodison which Newcastle eventually won. Forest, the only club to have played three games in a single round of the FA cup and not one of them at home.
Due to the Pitch invasion by hooligans; the FA ruled this game void & ordered a replay. Eventually after a 2nd replay at Goodison Park; Super Mac scored the winner in a hard fought 1-0 win over then 2nd Division Nottingham Forest & earned Newcastle United a FA Cup Semi-final at Hillsborough, Sheffield against Burnley.
I was a 15-year-old in the Paddock below the camera. My father was a Police Sergeant on duty BUT based in the 'charge room' at the ground, not around the pitch. Mr Conroy, who had seemingly led the invasion, was arrested and ended up under the very large wooden table in said charge room, allegedly with several irritated officers applying their boots to him.
I was 8 years old watching this game in the Leazers end with my dad.. Holy shit the maddest game I ever seen... Back then the Toon Army was never heard of.. But St. James" Park was not for the faint hearted... The noise was ear bleeding..
They wouldn't if the pitch hadn't been invaded. The next game should have been played at Forest, but saying that it was a great game proper football on a old Muddy English pitch
I was there & the fact of the matter is the Toon fans all thought it was their year to win the cup 🤣 and they were so incensed at the fact that Forest (a 2nd division team) were hammering them, they invaded the pitch to have the game abandoned & hope for a replay at least. Well they got their replay x2 & went through to get hammered & humiliated by Liverpool 3-0 ! justice prevailed in the end & the Toon supporters proved to be bad losers when 3-1 down. The FA should have awarded the game to Forest who would have prevailed but for being unnerved by the aggressive leezes end. COYR
Mike West died with the money mate, McDermott Tudor etch good but not great players but had character nowadays it's faceless players passing from side to side and no one goes past players any more,
I agree. Newcastle should have been expelled from the competition and Forest should have gone through to play Burnley. I went down to Wembley from Liverpool for the final, Newcastle fans on the tube singing about this match, but they were then forced to watch their team get the thrashing that the fans' behaviour so richly deserved. Two great goals by Tudor and Moncur, but the match should have been stopped before that point.
Hugh Johns giving a great commontary , no histryonics (like Motson) treating the watching viewers like adults not children who are watching there first match (Like commentators today)
I played snooker at the club Pat Howard part owned and played him a couple of times and asked him about the sending off. He basically said to Kew if he was to be sent off there would be a riot and he was correct
Four players on that pitch that would later win the European Cup with Forest, O'Neill, Bowyer, Robertson and Clark (Newcastle). Mcdermott would also win the European Cup with Liverpool
Yes, the FA ordered a replay...at Goodison Park. Result 0-0. Second replay also at Goodison , dodgy ref and Newcastle won 1-0 , the result the FA wanted.
Liverpool supporters are nowhere near as good. You'd see how bad they are if they had to go through what the Toon have. Anyone can support successful clubs, that's why they have so many plastic foreigners

I was in the crowd for this game as a spotty teenager NUFC daft. The bloody FA forced the teams to play the tie again, and again. Why they did that beats me, it's not as if the Forest player were scared to approach the touchline after the restart. ho ho ho

Give me the old pitches. It gave you drama, skill & the Wow factor. Today's perfectly perfect pitches are sterile & boring like a video game.
