And ill say this When it comes down to Scottish football the vast majority of Newcastle people and all around whole of the North East region are all for Rangers fc WHY ? simply because of the religion aspect must be as well as rangers fans flying of the Union jack flag , as many think Union flag is English when most of that flag is actually Scottish WHAT ---> With much blue upon it as well as the white cross for Scotland . But as for Scottish football way back then Celtic were most times the best side in Scotland being also the FIRST winners of big cup " The European Cup " and first team from UK shores to win it.. and done such a feat with an entire all Scottish team inc Manager Jock Stein a Scot this when they defeated Inter Milan in Lisbon , Portugal in 1967 which is down in history and not one club side shall repet such all from one country every footballer nd manager and all were born within 30 mile radius of Glasgow in Scotland . More Facts below V In 1970 Celtic won battle of Britain V a good Leeds Utd side home and away at Elland road Leeds and return Hampden park Glasgow with over 136 000 fans packed inside Hampden park them days Hampden held many thousands of fans unlike todays terrible ground . Celtic won that match also and went onto final in which was held at San Siro in Milan celtic lost in that final after extra time by goal ..Facts are i stood one day bottom of steps at Celtic park as seen crowds gather this in 1990 and not good times for Celtic fc ..Anyhow i see all young guys lassies all hving pics taken with modern young footballer i was not inrterested in any them ..See Charlie Nicholas stood up on stairs and i was stood right beside Paul McStay had his leg in plaster at that time ..Anyhow i spots Bobby Lennox one of Celtics Lisbon Lion players ..he has been a stalward a cracking good player for both Celtic fc and Scotland in his days ..I shots over to him and he stands awaiting my arrival true story this guys ..he proceeds to tell me one game which still rankles his memory to this very day was that very European cup final Celtic v Feyenoord in 1970 ..He said we Celtic did not turn up for that final , meaning did not perform ..he said if tht final was one weel later then it is a guarantee Celtic we would have won it as we knew we were better team than Feyenoord were ..but they deserved their final win on the day ..He then said we won v Leeds utd home and away but we turned up v Leeds Agents as when they got involved thats when football via Greed went right down hill .
I came down for the semi final on my local Rangers supporters bus. 14 years old. When the trouble broke out I got separated from my friends and had no idea where our bus was. 14 years old, no money, lost in a strange city and, amongst all the mayhem, some Newcastle United supporters helped me find my bus. In gratitude I can therefore claim that my English team has been Newcastle United since 1969, that I’ve enjoyed many return trips to see the lads and have wished Newcastle United all the best these past 50+ years.

I was an 11 year old boy living within spitting distance of SJP. I was at the Rangers game and the first leg of the final. My mother knew there would be trouble and told me to stay near an exit and get out asap if it kicked off. Great advice! I was safely home before the chaos escalated! When 'the lads' made the journey from the airport in the open top bus with Bob Moncur holding the cup I was on the wall of Fenham barracks, then ran down to the ground where all the gates were open for the fans, the atmosphere was fantastic. 18 years later I shook hands with Jackie Milburn not long before he passed away (RIP). Loads of memories, turn up on Saturday morning if it was raining with a garden fork. Loads of kids forking the pitch got a free ticket for the Boys End. Happy days.
As a rangers fan I remember those days and hopefully they stay in the past, I had a weekend down in Newcastle in 73 and I couldn’t have felt more welcome, the banter and laughs wonderful memories, love the geordies
It happened in Glasgow city centre during the 55 celebrations, in case you conveniently forgot! 😂 Knocking the 7 shades out of each other across George’s Square, attacking front-line workers during a Pandemic, destroying memorial benches, urinating on memorial statues. All this during their very first league win since established in 2012! It’s the Rangers way! 😂😂😂

Great memories and nicely told thank you. I too was there at the home semi - a Rangers fan gave me a free ticket outside of the Gallowgate and i also watched the game from the Gallowgate. I do recall the Rangers fans rioting, my mother was in tears at home thinking I was in among it. Two good goals though and on our way to our only cup success!

Great video thank you , I was at the the fairs cup games including the final , because it was over two legs we were over the moon being 3-0 up but the second leg was not on the telly live and the radio commentary from Budapest was only broadcast for the second half ( no radio 5 in those days ) switching on to find us 2-0 down was heartbreaking but as Joe Harvey said score and they will collapse like a pack of cards …great times
Great video Eddie which has brought back my memories of that era when I was 14 years old. I did not go the the Rangers match but me and a school class mate played the wagg from school to see the aftermath of the Rangers riot. Around the St James ground was like a war zone and shop windows were smashed in. I did get to the final with my best friend and we queue up at the Gallowgate end for over 8 hours to get a ticket for the Popular / East Stand end. On final day we stood at pitch level right on the half way line, the chanting was none stop....brilliant. when the team returned with the cup and travelled in an open top bus through the town to St James once again I found the need to play the wagg amd we followed the bus to the ground and was amazed that we actually got into the season ticket seated end. Eee that old ground was crap compared to now. To think that the then playing Kevin Keegan experienced that old ground, how times move on
As a rangers fan I feel a bit sad that this happened in Newcastle, all my mates love the geordie and admit they are a very proud people who are now getting the team that their great support deserves.

I was 13 when we went on that magnificent cup run. Managed to get to every game including the final. Will never forget the Rangers semi final though. The Leazes end was so packed that to relieve the pressure down at the front the police moved me and hundreds of other youngsters to sit down on the cinder track around the edge of the pitch. Seeing hundreds of Rangers fans running across the pitch towards us was scary to say the least. We won 2-0 and went on to eventually win the cup in glorious fashion which is all that really mattered to this 13 year old at the time. Shame on Rangers FC and their support though.
Rangers don't really enjoy visiting England. Two years previous to this in 67, Rangers fans trashed Berwick after their team lost in the Scottish cup. I wasn't there, but so many similar stories to what's told on this video. A great watch 👏
Fabulous Eddy,.....these stories show how far the game has come as a spectacle. The pictures of Willie McFaul made me giggle. My Dad used to take me into the Paddock for a match, and he had a thing about Willie conceding goals by allowing the ball to pass between his legs. So when ever the opposition were getting close to the 18yard box he used to shout out to McFaul, "close your legs,"....so funny!! Lovely memories. Can't wait to hear Dave's story too from 1955. Dad had lots of pictures taken of him in the town that year, celebrating with the team and the cup after their return from Wembley. There was one in particular taken with Dad, Joe Harvey and the cup,...it was fabulous, but when mum passed I couldn't find it. It would be lovely to gather up as many images of these past glories. Mind But, there are plenty of new ones coming!!!!! PennyXxx
Yes McFaul was a bit of a liability. We used to deduct 9 point off our pre-season results estimation to allow for his goal keeping. That said, Frank Clark was an even bigger liability. That said they were still a great team, full of characters .

You know Eddie, this kind of thread might be a good area to explore for future content in your vids - eye witness accounts of certain games in our history, doesn't have to be a famous game, but could have a special place in the mind of the person your interviewing! For example, the sites, sounds and smells of a person's first game in the 70's, or something that happened to them during a game in 2011! I guess it would depend on the personality of the person you are interviewing, on how entertaining the thread may be, but I guess it could be food for thought!
A brilliant piece Eddie and Gary. Have watched loads o RUclips footage from the bad old days and crazy to think how Rangers fans demolished so many English fans when many now show a great love for their Sassenach brothers. I wonder if Rangers greats like John Greig, Wullie Henderson and Jim Baxter to name a few would have shown this ‘modern’ love for English fans and the English National team? All seens to have become a little political? Gary, were you or any mates up in Dundee for the Fairs Cup match 68/69 at Tannadice? A friend I interviewed for a piece in the ‘Gangs Of Dundee’ book recalled a bus pulling up with a banner on the back ‘Leaz End Bootboys’ and they got absolutely hammered. Alec was in the Shimmy gang who were all late 60s skinheads and said it was mayhem. Thankfully, changed days. I remember Rangers coming to Tannadice in the mid to later 70s as a young guy and it was dodgy as hell with the fans.

I’m Rangers fan, was at the game.Never forget getting into the game, the crushing was worst I can remember. My friends father was in the Glasgow branch of Far East prisoner war club, and got us in Newcastle branch before and after game, and were very well looked after. We got back to Glasgow in the wee hours trying to sober up for work.
The first leg of the final against Uzpest Dozsa wasn't televised live but the BBC showed highlights that night. The commentator was David Coleman and I can remember him saying something along the lines if ever a crowd won a game of football, then it was the crowd at St. James that night who he thought were fantastic.People who I know were at the game concurred with Coleman. Don't forget it was 0-0 at half time, and we scored all our goals in the second half.

I was there with my dad in the Gallowgate end aged 7 when the bottles started raining down from the Rangers fan.He quickly got me out of the ground and I missed the end of the game,but got home safe and sound.Funnily enough just getting the programme mounted.
Great video Eddie from a Bluenose who lived in Newcastle for a good few years. I’ve heard stories of guys who were at those matches from both sets of fans. Rangers had a huge following back then think they played Wolverhampton in 61 and it went their way in that game. Aston Villa was one that I think was actually abandoned. Keep up the good videos and really enjoying watching Newcastle this season they are a great distraction to Rangers (hopefully new manager soon and build from there) 🇬🇧 👍🏻
The Aston villa one was the English journalist called you Huns as he wrote the Scots came over the border as young as 15 and were drunk and looking to start a fight and he said they came over the border like hoards of Huns that where the nickname came from the huns ....

Great to see this video Yes what you say is correct we travelled up from Liverpool as members of The Liverpool Rangers Club and straight from the station we went to the Cherry Tree Pub we got in got a couple of pints then mayhem bottles flew from all around 2 great teams but the headlines in the papers it was even on The National News my mother was up all night awaiting my return after seeing the fans invasion and police with dogs and the bottles on the park memories my friend but in those days it was football at its best.

My late father was at this game and he said that it was the worst thing he’d seen at a match . He was at the final and I’ve still got his match ticket and also quite a few other matches and he was at the 55 final as well. Mind I used to go home and away in the eighties and saw a lot of violence during those times unfortunately.
I was there, in the Leazes End, for the home game. When the Rangers fans invaded the pitch from the Gallowgate end it was genuinely scary. Police horses and a lot of dogs formed a line and held them back. My uncle, George Wade, was in charge of the police for home games in those days. I went to all the home games except the final, despite having the chance of tickets, I was in the middle of my 'O' levels (GCSE's) and my dad wouldn't let me travel from Penrith

Great chat with Gary I have to say.......my 1st game was also in 1976.....a home division 1 match against Arsenal ( aged eight)....on my dads shoulders in what standing in the west stand on the half way line.....happy days! Great to see the team photo and David Criag on the front row.......he's never changed, you know, a top gent, in my opinion and the same for our Bob Moncur. Jinky Smith a fantastic Newcastle footballer in the 70s used to go out with the next door neighbours daughter, Jacqui......she now lives in Holland and although retired from work, she walks dogs for friends who still work for a living. Another tiny factoid!
Was at the first game at Ibrox, and hitched down to Newcastle for the return leg (no ticket of course). Can't remember exactly how I got in, it was either by scaling the wall or through a forced gate at the Gallowgate end. I don't know how many people that terracing was supposed to accommodate, but you couldn't move, there were way too many people in there....because like me thousands of ticketless had got in. I don't think the invasion of the pitch was a deliberate attempt to have the game abandoned as such. I think it was more a case of going 2-0 down and some fans losing it and spilling onto the field from an overcrowded terrace to cause 'trouble', and others following on. I was about half way down the terrace directly behind McFaul's goal, wasn't on the pitch. I saw a lot of the trouble after the game, and hitched back up the road in the early hours of the morning. I've been in Newcastle several times since, great place great people....sorry to see that the football club has gone down the route of rich Saudi owners...not that you'd want people like Ashley in charge.
As a Villa fan this tale of Rangers causing trouble resonated with me. I was at Villa Park on Saturday, October 9, 1976, Villa Park suffered some of the worst scenes of football hooliganism ever witnessed. I was 18 years old at the time and can honestly it was the scariest football situation I’ve ever been in. Keep up the good work Eddie!
Yes violence goes back 200 years in glasgow when you read the history. So it was a holiday to get out of glasgow for them. I would walk back from ibrox as a boy in the 70s and all the Celtic supporters buses would get all their windows put in as they drove down the carriageway with railway sleepers & bricks as the fans jumped on the floor. It was normal fayre back then and nothing said about it.
Guys coming onto the park with Irish tri colours started the bother, especially after the Birmingham pub bombing by the ira scum. We took over the holst end that day.

I went to the home game and stood in the Paddock below the main stand.I remember Rangers fans up the floodlights in the Gallowgate end and being chased down to Marlborough Crescent bus station after the game . I also attended the final, I was sixteen at the time but remember it like yesterday .
Great match one of those who can say I was there. I was at the back of the Leases when the Rangers hoard came marching from the Gallogate across the pitch. They got to the halfway line before the police were able to intervene. Coming out of the match a Rangers fan came up to me and swapped his scarf. I am not sure what happened to it but I wore it for years.
I'm a 62 year old West Brom supporter and the late 60's was also a great time for Albion but won nothing since 1968. Similar story as Newcastle since then, lots of near misses :(
Great video enjoyed seeing it I was at the rangers game I was with my farther in the paddock near to the gallowgate end when the second goal went in that was the moment the bottles were hurled from the gallowgate end into the section we were the bottles rained down on us I was scared stiff I not ashamed to say . Being only a few kids in there the adults took off there coats and held them over our heads .When the tirade slowed down us kids were escorted on to the cinder track the police lead me and a vfew other kids out of the ground .Me and dad walked up barrack Road and home to Frank St in benwell all the way home bumping into loads of rangers fans on the way relieved to get home safe but also delighted we were to play in a European final

A brlliant programme. I remember listening to the second leg on the radio. My dad and I had been so disappointed by Andy Penman's penalty miss in the first leg. He was a classy player and a dead ball specialist. The commentator for the away leg was the one and only David Francey. I remember him descibing Rangers fans throwing missiles and then adding in alarm...'they are throwing bottles at me!' There were reports that the police dogs had to be sedated afterwards but that may be apocryphal. It seems incredible that so few games were televised live in these days including European finals . It seems also incredible that more people were not badly injured or killed at matches. Of course, the Ibrox disaster was only a few years away. It was not the result of a riot. My Dad and I were at Ibrox that awful day. The lasting legacy of bad behaviour by fans is that alcohol is not served in Scottish grounds to this day. Good luck to Newcastle in the Champions' League this season. Maybe ust as well that the Rangers didn't make it.

I was there that night, sixteen years old and drove into the Toon from Blyth on my Lambretta scooter. Offered £10 for my ticket by a polite Ranger's fan which was a fortune then. I watched from behind the Leazes goal and remember a Jock running up to us attempting to goad us out but a cop with a dog enticed him to jump into the crowd with obvious results. Newcastle trainer Dave Smith was on the pitch escorting our players off the pitch when a Jock tried to hit him and Dave grabbed his scarf and belted him. My final memory was hundreds of fights taking place outside of the west stand and a cop punching a Jock and dragging him up to punch him again and again. I got stopped by a cop car at High pit on the way home and the copper only wanted to know what the game was like and how bad was the violence. Oh happy days!
Hi eddie..As a Rangers fan I was saddened to hear what had happened back in the day..gladly its a lot different now...I witnessed Newcastle at ibrox in Ally Mccoists testimonial and recently this close season for Alan McGregor's testimonial . Both games the atmosphere was brilliant ...hope it hasn't scarred you on your views on Rangers. Up the toon and the gers. I was there, same end, Poplar, yeah was some night, really dangerous and at times frightening. Well said Andrewswan5723, I'm in Scotland now and a Well & Gers fan(plus toon). Great people , great welcoming fans at both clubs. Mon the Well
I was at both legs with my Dad. Ibrox was very hairy 75k crammed in. Govan has certainly moved on since then. Our bus was bricked, so it was a bit drafty on the way home. Home leg we were also on the Popular side. Never seen so many drunk people in the same place. Rangers fans at the front of the Gallowgate were being hit by bottles thrown from the back by their own fans, and that's why they initially went onto the pitch. But more followed. Police dog handlers were brilliant and many a Rangers fan suffered a bite or two from a German shepherd that night. I'd didn't see it exactly the same as this gentleman did after the game, as plenty Newcastle fans we're trying to get stuck into them. They were too pissed to fight. But they did cause quite a bit of damage around town that night. Incredible memories.
Hi from Vermont Eddy. As a young 14 year-old I attended all of the Fairs Cup home games, standing right at pitch edge (only way I could see....) in the Leazes end (all standing, home end). My recollection on the Rangers games was that the Scots were in good humor before the game, bringing down many more fans than had tickets. As you can imagine they were drinking it up a storm prior to the game, and my understanding is that many got into the Gallowgate without tickets. As Gary indicated, the Rangers fans did indeed invade the pitch, taunting the Newcastle fans and throwing beer bottles. Reacting to this, the section of Leazes supporters behind me pushed forward and I was forced forward onto the pitch (or get crushed otherwise) as they attempted to confront the Rangers fans. Thankfully the police did get the mob under control and the game was able to reach completion. I guess I was lucky to actually get on the field during a cup semi-final 🙂
I was 8 years old and my dad got 2 tickets for the first leg at Ibrox, we were in the main stand. I actually remember the game quite clearly, especially Andy Penman missing the penalty. Still have the programme in a box somewhere 🇬🇧
I was at the Ibrox game i can genuinely say that the Newcastle support was and still is the biggest away support i have ever seen at Ibrox apart from Celtic. At the end of the game i had to walk from the east terracing past the main stand to past the west terracing where that end the Newcastle fans were in. I genuinely never seen any real violence but it must have happened. At that time the Rangers support were very violent and never seen any other teams fans trying to take them on apart of Celtic and maybe Hibs. Anyway i have always been a Magpies supporter and used to go to games best people and fans in England. Best of luck and silverware will be coming soon to Tyneside.
I was also at St James that night and 16 yrs old. I was behind the goal in the Leazes end when the Rangers fans invaded, it was darn scary. Even getting away from the ground after the game was dangerous.

The cup run that got me going through the turnstiles at St James. Gary's description is spot on but the trouble outside and in the central station was bad. Both sets of fans waiting for trains home. Pre metro days so all in the station together... I remember watching the final on a ITV football special. The picture was terrible as the satalite wasnt in the right place according to the commentators Dickie Davis and Jim Rosenthal that made me laugh.. a bloke who lived near me flew to the final with the team on one of 3 charter planes and brought back a load of programmes and i got one. Pinned it to my wall with my fairs cup scarf (stripes with old badge) and pennent with both teams on it.. That was the start.
Scary listening to the old days...jeeeeeeez 😮 But its History in football. Lets hope we can enjoy the beautiful game with family and friends from now on...

I was at Walbottle Campus on the day, and I recall the Rangers coaches that passed by the school on the Hexham road got bricked by ‘schoolchildren in blazers’ (as reported in the EC) so it wasn’t like the local lads were innocent!
I was at both matches got two tickets for the match from two Newcastle fans at Ibrox. Embarrassed by the scenes at Newcastle, so many travelled without tickets as well. We were marched round the track to the Rangers end because of the tickets we got. Too many folk blind drunk, not one of our finest moments. Nice to see Newcastle doing well. 💙
I too saw the semi at Ibrox and had a similar experience to Gary. Coincidentally I was the same age, 19. I hitchhiked with a pal to Glasgow ( but took the afternoon off because I was “ill”). On arrival in the city centre I could sense the hostility, which was confirmed by a couple of kicks up the bum as I walked along. I decided to chicken out and hid my scarf by putting it with some other belongings in the lockers in the train station. Inside the ground the atmosphere was boiling! I could not get with the other toon supporters and stood with the home crowd, where I was treated to the sight of men peeing in the terraces, one of whom peed onto the back of the bloke in front of him who was oblivious because he had a raincoat on and it just ran off onto the ground and down the steps . On leaving someone must’ve heard my accent because I ended up being chased through the streets. One of the pursuers even picked up a small tree in a pot outside a nightclub entrance and chased me with it, but he in turn got chased by the night club doorman 😂. What a fiasco. At the time I was a member of Blaydon Harriers, so there was little chance I’d get caught, thankfully. My friend and I stayed with one of his relatives just outside Glasgow and hitched home the following day. As a post script, I’ll tell you that the driver of the last car to give us a lift back stopped to go into a shop about 10miles short of home. I was in the front passenger seat and being a nosey teenager I sneaked a look in the glove compartment while he was in the shop. I was shocked to find a magazine displaying photos of naked men in various “positions”. That was a long 10 miles!
Ha, Ha, Yes, the smell of pish at a Rangers match at Ibrox in those days was so pungent and horrible you'd think you were in a lavvy. Then there were the bottles that would get thrown when the drunks were pished. I don't know how I never got hit with one. It was always worse at big matches.
I'd seen every home leg of that campaign and sadly missed the final 1st leg, sitting my 'City n Guilds' finals at South Sheilds Marine Tech. I got a very good pass...so mebbies it was worth it...!
In 1969 I was 19 and studying at Bath Lane College of Further ED. During the afternoon of the match in Bath Lane there were so many drunken Rangers supporters outside with a bottle of Brown Ale in one hand and whiskey in the other that our lecturer abandoned the lesson and my friend Christine and I headed for home. We had to walk down Pink Lane and kept getting stopped by Rangers fans asking if we had tickets to sell ! We got on our bus and started to head up Grainger Street to be faced by the width of the street full of Rangers fans heading towards the bus. We were upstairs of the bus and the fans swamped the sides bus and started to make it sway....we were a little frightened to say the least, but I don't think it is easy to push over an Atlanta number 41 bus. My hubby to be (we had not met then) left work late and only just got to the match for kick off. The only part available was the Gallowgate end in amongst the Rangers fans. As you can imagine he was terrified and darn not open his mouth. or show any reaction when Newcastle scored. The pitch invasion was very frightening for him.
I remember it well as a 14 year old lad me and my mates were in the Leazes End. My mother was manageress of the Magpie Grill room above Greggs in Percy street and we used to go in before the matches. We were met at the door by my mother who ushered us away as it was full of Rangers supporters. Happy days Wyn Davies used to call for his tea after the match and my mother got a Christmas card off him for years after he left the toon. The players used to get luncheon vouchers back then and they were often in and a good source for tickets 😂
My mother took my brother and I to every home leg of the Fairs cup run. I was only 9 years old. In the Rangers semi final we were in the paddock near the corner flag next to the Gallowgate end. When the bottles started to rain down from the Rangers fans there was an older guy in front of us got clattered in the side of the head and fell forwards onto the wall at the front. My mother took us straight out. I missed the goals but was back for the final at SJP. Hoping for another trophy before I pop my clogs
I remember it well. I was there, together with the final. I was also in the popular side, where I stood with my mates for all the games. I had a slightly different memory of the Rangers fans. There were some around us, brilliant lads, who shared their whisky with us ( no segregation in those days) I’ll not repeat what they said about the idiots who invaded the pitch, but it wasn’t complimentary. So these lads kept on drinking and enjoying themselves, we all shook hands at the end of the game.
My mates first ever match was the fairs cup final, went with his dad. From the very next day he became a Man Utd supporter... Still don't understand it to this day. 🤔

Great reliving the emotions of the fairs cup - I was there as a 14year old and standing in the A wing next. To the gallowgate end - what actually happened was that the rangers supporters who looked so colourful with all their blue flags etc. we’re hoping their beer glasses etc towards the pitch - I saw a rangers lady being led away blond lady except for a long blood stripe down her head - the bottles and glasses didn’t reach the pitch they hit their own supporters at the edge of the pitch - they naturally got out of the way the only way was to go onto the pitch - yes went they were there they danced around- the leaders thought it was an invasion so they started but police entered and stoped them from getting to them. The police pushed the rangers supporters in to our home side A wing and I left the front and moved to the back with my father. They behaved well enough for drunken supporters while in there
at 14 years of age I witnessed everything that was in your last video and yes we were not soft there, it was like custers last stand for those scottish fans, the big scalps were there scarves OK I suppose I was a hooligan back then and lived in the west end Joe Harvey his house was just along from our council house in Fenham! he was on Two Ball Lonnen for all the skirmishes brought about by the Haggis heroes we seen them off! at 68 thats still a fond memory🙂
At the time a lot of Newcastle supporters used to wear either Rangers or Celtic scarves as well as their Newcastle colours. Although they weren't worn that night one of the lads had his Rangers scarf in his pocket. After the match he changed scarves saying that at least he'll get home safe and sound. The walk down towards Marlborough was a pretty frightening experience for this 15 year old at the time. I was never so happy to get on the bus home.
I remember my Aunty shouting howay man hurry up the lads will be coming back with the trophy, we were all lined up waiting on Ponteland road to welcome them back on the bus, there were lines of Geordies all the way Doon Ponteland road all the way to St James Park into the toon, I can still remember people cheering clapping and singing and Bobby on the top of the bus holding up the Trophy l was 9 years old
I remember it well and I was Old Trafford when United played Rangers in a friendly, I expected a few hundred Rangers fans but there were 8000 of them absolutely hell bent on trouble, the Scots led the way in hooliganism in those days and now they're probably the most decent fans around with a few exceptions obviously.
I was there on the night, I was called a fenian bastard by a bunch of rangers supporters, no idea what that was until I looked it up, a catholic?? Anyway wasn't that bothered about them, I headed to the ground, I was on my own. Got into the popular stand, good game, scored a goal or two, minor invasion...the bloke on the tannoy announced "keep off the pitch or we will stop the game"...well he couldn't have done better if had said, go on storm the pitch. In a scene reminiscent of the Jacobite rebellion, the hordes came swarming onto the pitch. Running along the cinder path at the side of the pitch screaming obscenities, I decided to regroup outside of the ground, forgetting it was just me. I bumped into a fella who asked what was going on, I related the story (he was a big man) so I decided to walk back to a safe area while in his company. I was glad I had made it out safe and sound, later I went to the final, what a match Moncur, proper captains game, he scored twice! I listened to the away leg and when Alan Foggons goal went in...you'll never know what that feeling is like until you win a final. I'm more hopeful now than I've ever been, that day may come in the next few years.
In the past boro would invite Celtic to come down for pre season friendlies this will have been the Irish conection with boro been a RC irish town and it would go down nicely then one year for some strange reason boro arranged a friendly up at ibrox, big mistake the buses were smashed and fans attacked.
As a Dundee United fan, I can confirm that Glasgow Rangers fans are still the same to this day.

I came down for the semi final on my local Rangers supporters bus. 14 years old. When the trouble broke out I got separated from my friends and had no idea where our bus was. 14 years old, no money, lost in a strange city and, amongst all the mayhem, some Newcastle United supporters helped me find my bus.
In gratitude I can therefore claim that my English team has been Newcastle United since 1969, that I’ve enjoyed many return trips to see the lads and have wished Newcastle United all the best these past 50+ years.
I'm a glasgow boy and seen it all over 50 years. Newcastle people are a special breed. 2 brothers both moved there.

I was an 11 year old boy living within spitting distance of SJP. I was at the Rangers game and the first leg of the final. My mother knew there would be trouble and told me to stay near an exit and get out asap if it kicked off. Great advice! I was safely home before the chaos escalated! When 'the lads' made the journey from the airport in the open top bus with Bob Moncur holding the cup I was on the wall of Fenham barracks, then ran down to the ground where all the gates were open for the fans, the atmosphere was fantastic. 18 years later I shook hands with Jackie Milburn not long before he passed away (RIP). Loads of memories, turn up on Saturday morning if it was raining with a garden fork. Loads of kids forking the pitch got a free ticket for the Boys End. Happy days.

Great memories and nicely told thank you. I too was there at the home semi - a Rangers fan gave me a free ticket outside of the Gallowgate and i also watched the game from the Gallowgate. I do recall the Rangers fans rioting, my mother was in tears at home thinking I was in among it. Two good goals though and on our way to our only cup success!

Great video Eddie which has brought back my memories of that era when I was 14 years old. I did not go the the Rangers match but me and a school class mate played the wagg from school to see the aftermath of the Rangers riot. Around the St James ground was like a war zone and shop windows were smashed in. I did get to the final with my best friend and we queue up at the Gallowgate end for over 8 hours to get a ticket for the Popular / East Stand end. On final day we stood at pitch level right on the half way line, the chanting was none stop....brilliant. when the team returned with the cup and travelled in an open top bus through the town to St James once again I found the need to play the wagg amd we followed the bus to the ground and was amazed that we actually got into the season ticket seated end. Eee that old ground was crap compared to now. To think that the then playing Kevin Keegan experienced that old ground, how times move on

I was 13 when we went on that magnificent cup run. Managed to get to every game including the final. Will never forget the Rangers semi final though. The Leazes end was so packed that to relieve the pressure down at the front the police moved me and hundreds of other youngsters to sit down on the cinder track around the edge of the pitch. Seeing hundreds of Rangers fans running across the pitch towards us was scary to say the least. We won 2-0 and went on to eventually win the cup in glorious fashion which is all that really mattered to this 13 year old at the time. Shame on Rangers FC and their support though.

Rangers don't really enjoy visiting England. Two years previous to this in 67, Rangers fans trashed Berwick after their team lost in the Scottish cup. I wasn't there, but so many similar stories to what's told on this video. A great watch 👏
Fabulous Eddy,.....these stories show how far the game has come as a spectacle. The pictures of Willie McFaul made me giggle. My Dad used to take me into the Paddock for a match, and he had a thing about Willie conceding goals by allowing the ball to pass between his legs. So when ever the opposition were getting close to the 18yard box he used to shout out to McFaul, "close your legs,"....so funny!! Lovely memories. Can't wait to hear Dave's story too from 1955. Dad had lots of pictures taken of him in the town that year, celebrating with the team and the cup after their return from Wembley. There was one in particular taken with Dad, Joe Harvey and the cup,...it was fabulous, but when mum passed I couldn't find it.
It would be lovely to gather up as many images of these past glories. Mind But, there are plenty of new ones coming!!!!!

Yes McFaul was a bit of a liability. We used to deduct 9 point off our pre-season results estimation to allow for his goal keeping. That said, Frank Clark was an even bigger liability. That said they were still a great team, full of characters .

I've been to an Arsenal game when my daughter lived and worked in London. I really enjoyed that day and I'm sure I'll get to St. James Park to watch United. Held back for so many years and now with a good manager and board ( ?? ) will hopefully be challenging for trophies. If they do win one, I'll pop down for the day and enjoy the celebrations. 👍🏴🏴

For example, the sites, sounds and smells of a person's first game in the 70's, or something that happened to them during a game in 2011!
I guess it would depend on the personality of the person you are interviewing, on how entertaining the thread may be, but I guess it could be food for thought!

Have watched loads o RUclips footage from the bad old days and crazy to think how Rangers fans demolished so many English fans when many now show a great love for their Sassenach brothers. I wonder if Rangers greats like John Greig, Wullie Henderson and Jim Baxter to name a few would have shown this ‘modern’ love for English fans and the English National team? All seens to have become a little political?
Gary, were you or any mates up in Dundee for the Fairs Cup match 68/69 at Tannadice? A friend I interviewed for a piece in the ‘Gangs Of Dundee’ book recalled a bus pulling up with a banner on the back ‘Leaz End Bootboys’ and they got absolutely hammered. Alec was in the Shimmy gang who were all late 60s skinheads and said it was mayhem. Thankfully, changed days. I remember Rangers coming to Tannadice in the mid to later 70s as a young guy and it was dodgy as hell with the fans.
Brilliant interview guys! Illuminating to hear from an eye witness about the bovver up at Ibrox. I was there too at the second leg....mayhem. Scenes like that can't ever happen again...can they? Been waiting to win another trophy since...its not easy being a Newcastle fan. Wish I could learn to say 'Felt Nowt!', but I can't.

I’m Rangers fan, was at the game.Never forget getting into the game, the crushing was worst I can remember. My friends father was in the Glasgow branch of Far East prisoner war club, and got us in Newcastle branch before and after game, and were very well looked after. We got back to Glasgow in the wee hours trying to sober up for work.
The first leg of the final against Uzpest Dozsa wasn't televised live but the BBC showed highlights that night. The commentator was David Coleman and I can remember him saying something along the lines if ever a crowd won a game of football, then it was the crowd at St. James that night who he thought were fantastic.People who I know were at the game concurred with Coleman. Don't forget it was 0-0 at half time, and we scored all our goals in the second half.

Great video Eddie from a Bluenose who lived in Newcastle for a good few years. I’ve heard stories of guys who were at those matches from both sets of fans. Rangers had a huge following back then think they played Wolverhampton in 61 and it went their way in that game. Aston Villa was one that I think was actually abandoned. Keep up the good videos and really enjoying watching Newcastle this season they are a great distraction to Rangers (hopefully new manager soon and build from there) 🇬🇧 👍🏻

Yes what you say is correct we travelled up from Liverpool as members of The Liverpool Rangers Club and straight from the station we went to the Cherry Tree Pub we got in got a couple of pints then mayhem bottles flew from all around 2 great teams but the headlines in the papers it was even on The National News my mother was up all night awaiting my return after seeing the fans invasion and police with dogs and the bottles on the park memories my friend but in those days it was football at its best.
Jimmy Scott still as competitive as ever. My pairs partner on the bowling green. Great listening to his account of the semi final and final. He loves Newcastle Utd, place and people.
My late father was at this game and he said that it was the worst thing he’d seen at a match . He was at the final and I’ve still got his match ticket and also quite a few other matches and he was at the 55 final as well. Mind I used to go home and away in the eighties and saw a lot of violence during those times unfortunately.

Police horses and a lot of dogs formed a line and held them back. My uncle, George Wade, was in charge of the police for home games in those days. I went to all the home games except the final, despite having the chance of tickets, I was in the middle of my 'O' levels (GCSE's) and my dad wouldn't let me travel from Penrith

Great chat with Gary I have to say.......my 1st game was also in 1976.....a home division 1 match against Arsenal ( aged eight)....on my dads shoulders in what standing in the west stand on the half way line.....happy days! Great to see the team photo and David Criag on the front row.......he's never changed, you know, a top gent, in my opinion and the same for our Bob Moncur. Jinky Smith a fantastic Newcastle footballer in the 70s used to go out with the next door neighbours daughter, Jacqui......she now lives in Holland and although retired from work, she walks dogs for friends who still work for a living. Another tiny factoid!

Was at the first game at Ibrox, and hitched down to Newcastle for the return leg (no ticket of course). Can't remember exactly how I got in, it was either by scaling the wall or through a forced gate at the Gallowgate end. I don't know how many people that terracing was supposed to accommodate, but you couldn't move, there were way too many people in there....because like me thousands of ticketless had got in.
I don't think the invasion of the pitch was a deliberate attempt to have the game abandoned as such. I think it was more a case of going 2-0 down and some fans losing it and spilling onto the field from an overcrowded terrace to cause 'trouble', and others following on. I was about half way down the terrace directly behind McFaul's goal, wasn't on the pitch. I saw a lot of the trouble after the game, and hitched back up the road in the early hours of the morning. I've been in Newcastle several times since, great place great people....sorry to see that the football club has gone down the route of rich Saudi owners...not that you'd want people like Ashley in charge.
As a Villa fan this tale of Rangers causing trouble resonated with me. I was at Villa Park on Saturday, October 9, 1976, Villa Park suffered some of the worst scenes of football hooliganism ever witnessed. I was 18 years old at the time and can honestly it was the scariest football situation I’ve ever been in.

Yes violence goes back 200 years in glasgow when you read the history. So it was a holiday to get out of glasgow for them. I would walk back from ibrox as a boy in the 70s and all the Celtic supporters buses would get all their windows put in as they drove down the carriageway with railway sleepers & bricks as the fans jumped on the floor. It was normal fayre back then and nothing said about it.
Guys coming onto the park with Irish tri colours started the bother, especially after the Birmingham pub bombing by the ira scum. We took over the holst end that day.

I went to the home game and stood in the Paddock below the main stand.I remember Rangers fans up the floodlights in the Gallowgate end and being chased down to Marlborough Crescent bus station after the game . I also attended the final, I was sixteen at the time but remember it like yesterday .

Great match one of those who can say I was there. I was at the back of the Leases when the Rangers hoard came marching from the Gallogate across the pitch. They got to the halfway line before the police were able to intervene. Coming out of the match a Rangers fan came up to me and swapped his scarf. I am not sure what happened to it but I wore it for years.
I'm a 62 year old West Brom supporter and the late 60's was also a great time for Albion but won nothing since 1968. Similar story as Newcastle since then, lots of near misses :(
Great video enjoyed seeing it I was at the rangers game I was with my farther in the paddock near to the gallowgate end when the second goal went in that was the moment the bottles were hurled from the gallowgate end into the section we were the bottles rained down on us I was scared stiff I not ashamed to say . Being only a few kids in there the adults took off there coats and held them over our heads .When the tirade slowed down us kids were escorted on to the cinder track the police lead me and a vfew other kids out of the ground .Me and dad walked up barrack Road and home to Frank St in benwell all the way home bumping into loads of rangers fans on the way relieved to get home safe but also delighted we were to play in a European final
was there at this match in the leazes end 14 at the time ,in fact was at every home match in this famous cup run we got in the back door and came out the front with the trophy and i was there at st james park to see them bring the cup home

I remember listening to the second leg on the radio. My dad and I had been so disappointed by Andy Penman's penalty miss in the first leg. He was a classy player and a dead ball specialist.
The commentator for the away leg was the one and only David Francey. I remember him descibing Rangers fans throwing missiles and then adding in alarm...'they are throwing bottles at me!'
There were reports that the police dogs had to be sedated afterwards but that may be apocryphal.
It seems incredible that so few games were televised live in these days including European finals .
It seems also incredible that more people were not badly injured or killed at matches. Of course, the Ibrox disaster was only a few years away. It was not the result of a riot.
My Dad and I were at Ibrox that awful day.
The lasting legacy of bad behaviour by fans is that alcohol is not served in Scottish grounds to this day.

0:16 i recognise that baldy napper at the back there just poking out. Thats my grandfather. Mr David Bowman Smith. He sadly passed away the same day as the Queen of all days. He was a hell of a bloke that lead a hell of a life, and he will be sadly missed.
I was there that night, sixteen years old and drove into the Toon from Blyth on my Lambretta scooter. Offered £10 for my ticket by a polite Ranger's fan which was a fortune then. I watched from behind the Leazes goal and remember a Jock running up to us attempting to goad us out but a cop with a dog enticed him to jump into the crowd with obvious results. Newcastle trainer Dave Smith was on the pitch escorting our players off the pitch when a Jock tried to hit him and Dave grabbed his scarf and belted him. My final memory was hundreds of fights taking place outside of the west stand and a cop punching a Jock and dragging him up to punch him again and again. I got stopped by a cop car at High pit on the way home and the copper only wanted to know what the game was like and how bad was the violence. Oh happy days!

Hi eddie..As a Rangers fan I was saddened to hear what had happened back in the day..gladly its a lot different now...I witnessed Newcastle at ibrox in Ally Mccoists testimonial and recently this close season for Alan McGregor's testimonial . Both games the atmosphere was brilliant ...hope it hasn't scarred you on your views on Rangers. Up the toon and the gers. I was at both legs with my Dad. Ibrox was very hairy 75k crammed in. Govan has certainly moved on since then. Our bus was bricked, so it was a bit drafty on the way home.
Home leg we were also on the Popular side. Never seen so many drunk people in the same place.
Rangers fans at the front of the Gallowgate were being hit by bottles thrown from the back by their own fans, and that's why they initially went onto the pitch. But more followed.
Police dog handlers were brilliant and many a Rangers fan suffered a bite or two from a German shepherd that night.
I'd didn't see it exactly the same as this gentleman did after the game, as plenty Newcastle fans we're trying to get stuck into them.
They were too pissed to fight. But they did cause quite a bit of damage around town that night.

Hi from Vermont Eddy. As a young 14 year-old I attended all of the Fairs Cup home games, standing right at pitch edge (only way I could see....) in the Leazes end (all standing, home end). My recollection on the Rangers games was that the Scots were in good humor before the game, bringing down many more fans than had tickets. As you can imagine they were drinking it up a storm prior to the game, and my understanding is that many got into the Gallowgate without tickets.
As Gary indicated, the Rangers fans did indeed invade the pitch, taunting the Newcastle fans and throwing beer bottles. Reacting to this, the section of Leazes supporters behind me pushed forward and I was forced forward onto the pitch (or get crushed otherwise) as they attempted to confront the Rangers fans. Thankfully the police did get the mob under control and the game was able to reach completion.
I guess I was lucky to actually get on the field during a cup semi-final 🙂

I was 8 years old and my dad got 2 tickets for the first leg at Ibrox, we were in the main stand. I actually remember the game quite clearly, especially Andy Penman missing the penalty. Still have the programme in a box somewhere 🇬🇧

I was at the Ibrox game i can genuinely say that the Newcastle support was and still is the biggest away support i have ever seen at Ibrox apart from Celtic. At the end of the game i had to walk from the east terracing past the main stand to past the west terracing where that end the Newcastle fans were in. I genuinely never seen any real violence but it must have happened. At that time the Rangers support were very violent and never seen any other teams fans trying to take them on apart of Celtic and maybe Hibs. Anyway i have always been a Magpies supporter and used to go to games best people and fans in England. Best of luck and silverware will be coming soon to Tyneside.

I was also at St James that night and 16 yrs old. I was behind the goal in the Leazes end when the Rangers fans invaded, it was darn scary. Even getting away from the ground after the game was dangerous.

I was there in the Popular End -Rangers fans carrying crates of whiskey around Every pub in the Haymarket got turned over - they even bottled their own keeper
The cup run that got me going through the turnstiles at St James. Gary's description is spot on but the trouble outside and in the central station was bad. Both sets of fans waiting for trains home. Pre metro days so all in the station together...
I remember watching the final on a ITV football special. The picture was terrible as the satalite wasnt in the right place according to the commentators Dickie Davis and Jim Rosenthal that made me laugh.. a bloke who lived near me flew to the final with the team on one of 3 charter planes and brought back a load of programmes and i got one. Pinned it to my wall with my fairs cup scarf (stripes with old badge) and pennent with both teams on it..
That was the start.

I was at Walbottle Campus on the day, and I recall the Rangers coaches that passed by the school on the Hexham road got bricked by ‘schoolchildren in blazers’ (as reported in the EC) so it wasn’t like the local lads were innocent!
I was at both matches got two tickets for the match from two Newcastle fans at Ibrox. Embarrassed by the scenes at Newcastle, so many travelled without tickets as well. We were marched round the track to the Rangers end because of the tickets we got. Too many folk blind drunk, not one of our finest moments. Nice to see Newcastle doing well. 💙

I too saw the semi at Ibrox and had a similar experience to Gary. Coincidentally I was the same age, 19. I hitchhiked with a pal to Glasgow ( but took the afternoon off because I was “ill”). On arrival in the city centre I could sense the hostility, which was confirmed by a couple of kicks up the bum as I walked along. I decided to chicken out and hid my scarf by putting it with some other belongings in the lockers in the train station. Inside the ground the atmosphere was boiling! I could not get with the other toon supporters and stood with the home crowd, where I was treated to the sight of men peeing in the terraces, one of whom peed onto the back of the bloke in front of him who was oblivious because he had a raincoat on and it just ran off onto the ground and down the steps . On leaving someone must’ve heard my accent because I ended up being chased through the streets. One of the pursuers even picked up a small tree in a pot outside a nightclub entrance and chased me with it, but he in turn got chased by the night club doorman 😂. What a fiasco. At the time I was a member of Blaydon Harriers, so there was little chance I’d get caught, thankfully. My friend and I stayed with one of his relatives just outside Glasgow and hitched home the following day. As a post script, I’ll tell you that the driver of the last car to give us a lift back stopped to go into a shop about 10miles short of home. I was in the front passenger seat and being a nosey teenager I sneaked a look in the glove compartment while he was in the shop. I was shocked to find a magazine displaying photos of naked men in various “positions”. That was a long 10 miles!

Ha, Ha, Yes, the smell of pish at a Rangers match at Ibrox in those days was so pungent and horrible you'd think you were in a lavvy. Then there were the bottles that would get thrown when the drunks were pished. I don't know how I never got hit with one. It was always worse at big matches.

In 1969 I was 19 and studying at Bath Lane College of Further ED. During the afternoon of the match in Bath Lane there were so many drunken Rangers supporters outside with a bottle of Brown Ale in one hand and whiskey in the other that our lecturer abandoned the lesson and my friend Christine and I headed for home. We had to walk down Pink Lane and kept getting stopped by Rangers fans asking if we had tickets to sell ! We got on our bus and started to head up Grainger Street to be faced by the width of the street full of Rangers fans heading towards the bus. We were upstairs of the bus and the fans swamped the sides bus and started to make it sway....we were a little frightened to say the least, but I don't think it is easy to push over an Atlanta number 41 bus. My hubby to be (we had not met then) left work late and only just got to the match for kick off. The only part available was the Gallowgate end in amongst the Rangers fans. As you can imagine he was terrified and darn not open his mouth. or show any reaction when Newcastle scored. The pitch invasion was very frightening for him.

I remember it well as a 14 year old lad me and my mates were in the Leazes End. My mother was manageress of the Magpie Grill room above Greggs in Percy street and we used to go in before the matches. We were met at the door by my mother who ushered us away as it was full of Rangers supporters. Happy days Wyn Davies used to call for his tea after the match and my mother got a Christmas card off him for years after he left the toon. The players used to get luncheon vouchers back then and they were often in and a good source for tickets 😂

My mother took my brother and I to every home leg of the Fairs cup run. I was only 9 years old. In the Rangers semi final we were in the paddock near the corner flag next to the Gallowgate end. When the bottles started to rain down from the Rangers fans there was an older guy in front of us got clattered in the side of the head and fell forwards onto the wall at the front. My mother took us straight out. I missed the goals but was back for the final at SJP. Hoping for another trophy before I pop my clogs

I remember it well. I was there, together with the final. I was also in the popular side, where I stood with my mates for all the games. I had a slightly different memory of the Rangers fans. There were some around us, brilliant lads, who shared their whisky with us ( no segregation in those days) I’ll not repeat what they said about the idiots who invaded the pitch, but it wasn’t complimentary. So these lads kept on drinking and enjoying themselves, we all shook hands at the end of the game.

Great reliving the emotions of the fairs cup - I was there as a 14year old and standing in the A wing next. To the gallowgate end - what actually happened was that the rangers supporters who looked so colourful with all their blue flags etc. we’re hoping their beer glasses etc towards the pitch - I saw a rangers lady being led away blond lady except for a long blood stripe down her head - the bottles and glasses didn’t reach the pitch they hit their own supporters at the edge of the pitch - they naturally got out of the way the only way was to go onto the pitch - yes went they were there they danced around- the leaders thought it was an invasion so they started but police entered and stoped them from getting to them. The police pushed the rangers supporters in to our home side A wing and I left the front and moved to the back with my father. They behaved well enough for drunken supporters while in there

at 14 years of age I witnessed everything that was in your last video and yes we were not soft there, it was like custers last stand for those scottish fans, the big scalps were there scarves OK I suppose I was a hooligan back then and lived in the west end Joe Harvey his house was just along from our council house in Fenham! he was on Two Ball Lonnen for all the skirmishes brought about by the Haggis heroes we seen them off! at 68 thats still a fond memory🙂
At the time a lot of Newcastle supporters used to wear either Rangers or Celtic scarves as well as their Newcastle colours. Although they weren't worn that night one of the lads had his Rangers scarf in his pocket. After the match he changed scarves saying that at least he'll get home safe and sound. The walk down towards Marlborough was a pretty frightening experience for this 15 year old at the time. I was never so happy to get on the bus home.

I remember my Aunty shouting howay man hurry up the lads will be coming back with the trophy, we were all lined up waiting on Ponteland road to welcome them back on the bus, there were lines of Geordies all the way Doon Ponteland road all the way to St James Park into the toon, I can still remember people cheering clapping and singing and Bobby on the top of the bus holding up the Trophy l was 9 years old

I remember it well and I was Old Trafford when United played Rangers in a friendly, I expected a few hundred Rangers fans but there were 8000 of them absolutely hell bent on trouble, the Scots led the way in hooliganism in those days and now they're probably the most decent fans around with a few exceptions obviously.
I was there on the night, I was called a fenian bastard by a bunch of rangers supporters, no idea what that was until I looked it up, a catholic?? Anyway wasn't that bothered about them, I headed to the ground, I was on my own. Got into the popular stand, good game, scored a goal or two, minor invasion...the bloke on the tannoy announced "keep off the pitch or we will stop the game"...well he couldn't have done better if had said, go on storm the pitch. In a scene reminiscent of the Jacobite rebellion, the hordes came swarming onto the pitch. Running along the cinder path at the side of the pitch screaming obscenities, I decided to regroup outside of the ground, forgetting it was just me. I bumped into a fella who asked what was going on, I related the story (he was a big man) so I decided to walk back to a safe area while in his company. I was glad I had made it out safe and sound, later I went to the final, what a match Moncur, proper captains game, he scored twice! I listened to the away leg and when Alan Foggons goal went in...you'll never know what that feeling is like until you win a final. I'm more hopeful now than I've ever been, that day may come in the next few years.

In the past boro would invite Celtic to come down for pre season friendlies this will have been the Irish conection with boro been a RC irish town and it would go down nicely then one year for some strange reason boro arranged a friendly up at ibrox, big mistake the buses were smashed and fans attacked.
