I love how the creators of this game expanded on the Xen and Gonarch's Lair chapters, which was sorely needed, making the entire Xen section of the game feel more significant to the overall arc as well as realistic. They managed to maintain the disorientation from the original game while making it feel organic.
I agree completely. I hated Xen in the original game, and honestly after the first time I played it I either flew through the level with cheats or skipped it entirely. This version's Xen looks AWESOME and FUN with lore and cool remnants of Black Mesa teams, and jaw dropping visuals and music. Mint!

A perfect description. Unfortunately my computer blew up just as I got to Gonarch’s lair, then I had a new baby to content with. I’ve not been able to go back to finish the game, but I can’t wait 😉
The animation where Gordon picks up the crowbar after teleporting into Xen is just so beautifully done! It feels like it has weight like an actual crowbar.

Nickelodeon Stuff There's a mod for Black Mesa called "On a Rail Uncut" which, as you may guess, adds the complete chapter. Apparently some people prefer the full thing.
i like how early on you can see what went wrong with the experiment; gordon being late, the pos guard at the lounge, the argument in the office next to the locker room, the control room's frustration with the latter, eli's malfunctioning equipment, the guy complaining about his phd's, two guys near the lasers, the "last fluctuation" guys, talk about the butterfly effect
They could have just made it with the same graphical quality as Half Life 2. But no, they went above and beyond, pushed the Source Engine to its limits. Good on them :)
@@therobot1080 There's a lot of sleight of hand going on in the game to pull off some effects, especially in the Xen world. Without seeing the map source, I can only speculate, but it looks like they did quite a bit of seamless teleporting and skybox tricks to give the illusion of the huge world. Lots of the physics effects looked to be modeled and animated, because Source definitely couldn't pull off the huge terrain destruction without crashing or grinding to a halt. Half-Life 2: Episode 2 did this for the bridge destruction sequence, it was all modeled and animated outside the engine, Source just plays the model animation and doesn't actually simulate it. Like at 2:11:30 He's facing a panel on the wall, and the scientist is trying to say something and he partly turns in the other guy's direction while making a small nod, as though Gordon was only partly paying attention. It adds a layer of immersion and I appreciate it
This is outrageously impressive and the OST reminds me in the best of ways of the orignal soundrack for the 1998 UNREAL, one of the peaks of the genre.
I just started playing this after having it in my Steam collection for years. It's so aggravating in a few spots, but I cannot stop playing it. This game outshines most of the newer games of this genre out there today. The soundtrack is great, the atmosphere is great, the story is definitely Lovecraft inspired, the combat is also great. So glad that I finally played this one.
"Gordon walked into the test chamber, unprepared for the unforeseen consequences of his actions". Now, read that in your heads in the narrator's voice from Stanley's Parable.
Gordon walked right to the surface, unprepared for the tension that has been brewing up there for quite some time. Gordon entered the laboratories of Black Mesa, where alien life was once studied under questionable ethics.
No, they're different. Take a listen to their damaged sounds, the sound they make when they mumble in pain. That's definitely a big indicator that they have different voice actors, don't r/wooosh me.

My favourite part of all of this is that it isn't just a graphical improvement of Half Life, but some of the parts of the game are actually different from the original. Sure, it would be cool to have a modernized version of an older game, but it's more interesting when it's slightly different.
Crowbar Collective did an incredible job of recapturing the spirit and gameplay of the original. Hats off to everyone who worked on this testament of love!

Yeah lookin at totdays games. If only they could apply all their creative ways to empower the player with challenging mysterious and hostile level design like this. They dont tell you where the bells and whistles are. You figure it out from environmental hints and scripted sequences.
This game is truly a masterpiece, so many awesome moments that are intensified or made much cooler with very awesome music, I love almost every moment of this game Edit:a missed opportunity was to add another encounter on the last elevator fight, when the music reaches its most intense and you destroy the 3 forcefields holding the elevator from moving up they should have added a big team attacking you like shamans and grunts, a lot of them to go with the intensity of the music then add the elevator hault and lowering it for a last ditch effort to stop you with like 30 or so shamans trying to stop you, it would have been the best encounter in video game history if they tried that.
this game was my first real exposure to the half life series and god am i glad it was. this game is absolutely gorgeous. the remade xen is exactly what i imagine an alien universe would be.

You could use god mode. But that takes the fun out of it. :/
Tbh, G-man sounds better in this version than in the beta one. Much more enigmatic and charismatic at the same time
His spastic breathing is making me really fucking uncomfortable.

Something I really like about this playthrough is the little nods he makes Gordon do. Especially when it seems like he's doing a half nod.
Like at 2:11:30
He's facing a panel on the wall, and the scientist is trying to say something and he partly turns in the other guy's direction while making a small nod, as though Gordon was only partly paying attention.
It adds a layer of immersion and I appreciate it
I did that everytime some one was talking to me in the orginal, it keeps me.... sane
17:47 it's also hilarious this part when he shaked his head to the scientist about his unprofessionalism.
HEV uses Windows? Gordon was lucky not to get any updates while fighting grunts or nihilants.
Probably no bsod... blue screen of death
@144p how does he keep that beauty in hl2 like no sleep for 2 days would kill my eyes
This is outrageously impressive and the OST reminds me in the best of ways of the orignal soundrack for the 1998 UNREAL, one of the peaks of the genre.
6:30:55 damn, you know how it feels when the song come out at this scene
20:37, and at that time, all earth went to hell.

17:23 that iconic voice of the narrator from Stanley Parable
I thought I recognized that voice!
Scientists: *falls to death*
Bolloxed: *lets take a closer look*
Wasn't it a guard?
@@stnorocwzo it is a guard but in the original half life game (black mesa) the dude hanging in there, was actually a scientist
The first few minutes is like a job simulator walkthrough
That's what makes Half life/Black Mesa so great, you think it will be a relaxed game and then boom, resonance cascade and everything is fucked up
"Gordon walked into the test chamber, unprepared for the unforeseen consequences of his actions".
Now, read that in your heads in the narrator's voice from Stanley's Parable.
yes
Holy shi-
Gordon walked right to the surface, unprepared for the tension that has been brewing up there for quite some time.
Gordon entered the laboratories of Black Mesa, where alien life was once studied under questionable ethics.
9:51 her laugh tho 😂😂😂
11:36 The "Breakroom microwave incident"
Did you know that Gordon Freeman has the same voice actor as Chell form Portal, or Stanley from Stanley's parable?
No, they're different. Take a listen to their damaged sounds, the sound they make when they mumble in pain. That's definitely a big indicator that they have different voice actors, don't r/wooosh me.

This has literally become my favorite Half-Life game and it isn’t even official
This is a ridiculously high quality mod - it looks like the artists individually textured every single face, the detail is amazing
This is not a mod this a whole different game and it took 15 years to remake half life
@@gabrieljansGit was originally supposed to be a mod with updated textures. Look up the documentary about the development of this game, it’s really interesting.
@@DarkDoge367 oh I never knew about that. Definetly will checkout the documentary
@@DarkDoge367Funny enough, a lot of Valve's triple-A titles all started out like that. Counter Strike, Team Fortress, Day of Defeat all started as Half Life mods, and Gmod was a mod of HL2. Half Life just seems to be this magical soil that just spawns some of the best games out there.
Then again, this was also DayZ's life cycle... to much rockier success.
After 3 hours of watching this run through I am EXHAUSTED. Amazing job of incorporating all the HL content from the years gone by into this Tour De Force reimagining. Bravo CC Team. Sadly I am not a gamer worthy of playing through this but to all who can, Kudo's.
I can! Kinda. I’m so bad at the game I need the god and notarget commands for the whole game. I’m even on easy mode!
@@DarkDoge367 pathetic, i need to use god mode to get past anomalous materials and black mesa inbound
@@WastedPotentiaI1 I use it for the whole game.
@@DarkDoge367 How do you input those commands exactly?
@@Pechancelot if you go to the pause menu press the slash button on your keyboard in the top left-ish type “sv_cheats 1” then you can type “No target” so enemies can’t see you. “God” makes you indestructible. Almost 7 hours of Black Mesa. Why can't you last that long in the bedroom? :(

My favourite part of all of this is that it isn't just a graphical improvement of Half Life, but some of the parts of the game are actually different from the original. Sure, it would be cool to have a modernized version of an older game, but it's more interesting when it's slightly different.
I'm doing it now, half way through Xen..i'm speechless...tears of joy, this game is incredible! It has a bit of an Avatar vibe on some places.
6:15:49 this part, with that music... damn it is amazing this remake.
Critical Mass.
valve should hire joel nielsen for half life 3
Crowbar Collective did an incredible job of recapturing the spirit and gameplay of the original. Hats off to everyone who worked on this testament of love!

2:41:35 Ah, the part where the place is ideal for saving the game and killing the scientists while experimenting with snarks the first time you play the game... Ah, the good memories...
This is so much better than modern games. No power ups, no glowing neon lights, no forced action. Just exploring a world and story that unfolds as you go along at your own pace
A little bit claustophobic at times though, most especially the start segment. But its a great hommage to one kf the greatest game ever made.
I love glowing neon lights personally
Yeah lookin at totdays games. If only they could apply all their creative ways to empower the player with challenging mysterious and hostile level design like this.
They dont tell you where the bells and whistles are. You figure it out from environmental hints and scripted sequences.
“I guess it’s true, if it bleeds you can kill it.”
*nods
BOOM
This game is truly a masterpiece, so many awesome moments that are intensified or made much cooler with very awesome music, I love almost every moment of this game
Edit:a missed opportunity was to add another encounter on the last elevator fight, when the music reaches its most intense and you destroy the 3 forcefields holding the elevator from moving up they should have added a big team attacking you like shamans and grunts, a lot of them to go with the intensity of the music then add the elevator hault and lowering it for a last ditch effort to stop you with like 30 or so shamans trying to stop you, it would have been the best encounter in video game history if they tried that.
AHHH YESS I HAVE BEEN EXPECTING YOU!

I love how when the AMS was exploding, one of the scientists were actually worried about you and said, "Someone get him out of the-" but the other scientist interrupted and said "Just shut it down!"
To be fair shutting it down was a major priority. 1 life potentially being lost vs the entire facility and and countless personnel

It's like a future game about CERN. I've never played BM, just HL 1, 2 and Alyx. Awesome to get the controller out to see if my moves would be similar lol. Awesome walkthrough and best game series ever made. I always wondered how the aliens got on Earth in the first place. I see they obviously opened up a portal. Hence the CERN connection and possibility. Also why they made such an awesome game about experimenting with portals to other dimensions/worlds and the consequences.
