Aye, tis a place with many a memory. Of children laughing and playing in her halls. Of the House Mistress making the plans for the day and the Master of the House going out in the forest to hunt the daily meat. The help was very happy here for they were a part of the family. I bare him no ill will as I understood the nature of the transaction. My heart ached for them as their fortunes ever contracted. Inexorably and then, with the death of the Master, the House Mistress fell into a state of grief that took her away from here. By then all of her children, those that had survived the Great Plague, had moved on to other places. Some had gone to serve in the King's Army and that is where they lay forever. Last time I was here was nearly thirty years hence I left. I found myself walking this path as I will soon see my former Master and Headmistress again. Of children laughing and playing in her halls.
Of the House Mistress making the plans for the day and the Master of the House going out in the forest to hunt the daily meat.
The help was very happy here for they were a part of the family. No one was left out of the daily meals. Everyone contributed equally and this was a place of peace.
For many years, there was a bountiful spirit over this place.
I once worked here as a groundman, keeping the house up and the many fields cut short.
But the family's fortunes were not to stay bountiful.
The Master ran afoul of a wild boar, that he indeed killed but not before the boar had ravaged his body with its tusks.
I was not here when that happened.
My services had been sold away to another clan as I was a valued craftsman of my chores, well known, dependable and very well respected.
My Master got a great price for my hire out.
I bare him no ill will as I understood the nature of the transaction.
My heart ached for them as their fortunes ever contracted.
Inexorably and then, with the death of the Master, the House Mistress fell into a state of grief that took her away from here.
By then all of her children, those that had survived the Great Plague, had moved on to other places. Some had gone to serve in the King's Army and that is where they lay forever.
Last time I was here was nearly thirty years hence I left.
I found myself walking this path as I will soon see my former Master and Headmistress again.
I have an ailment that is progressing inside of me.
I just wanted to see this place one last time.
To hear the echoes of the children's laughter in my head, one last time.
To see her beautiful face in the doorway, smiling, beckoning all of us in for our dinner meal.
To laugh next to the Man of the House. and to know, life doesn't get better than this.
Farewell, my beloved memories.
