This was such a rare interview. God bless Joan and everyone for doing this show. Mary Wells is and was a legend and deserved better treatment by Motown. I'm glad many artists and celebrities came to Mary's aid. May she continue to R.I.P.

I never knew Motown wronged her so much on her Royalties. RIP our Beautiful Mary Wells. And bless all the wonderful people like Little Richard, Smokey and Anita Baker and Stevie Wonder and Supremes for monetarily helping Mary Wells when she was dying.

Mary unfortunately wanted out of her Motown contract so badly she signed away her right to receive her royalties. Motown in her final years settled out of court to out of court with a six figure amount. Her book is out now..

Berry Gordy should be crying in shame watching one of his greatest artists suffer like this! Rest In Peace Mary Wells for you are truly a legend that no one will ever forget!

Robert Velez unfortunately she jumped the gun and went to MGM who promised her movie career and big success they did nothing and dropped her and Berry was unfortunately crafty individual he a genius but very shifty he did Bobby Taylor wrong told him straight out

Berry wouldn’t want her to go coz she was the original’s Motown leading singer.

@@DJGary0910 perhaps nitpicking but I thought it was 20th Century Fox records,a division of the movie studios, where she went after departing Motown. She actually made some good records there, but the Motown magic was gone

MY MARY WELLS, THE GREATEST FIRST MOTOWN LADY. I HAD NEVER SEEN THIS INTERVIEW OF HER. IT MADE ME CRY. SO SORRY TO SEE HER SUFFER.

  • @FriendofDorothy

Her music has given me a lot of joy; I still listen to her hits nowadays just like I have every year since I first experienced her vocal talent. Whatever mistakes were made with her career will not tarnish or dim the legendary voice of Mary Wells. This is heartbreaking to watch, but she was not only brave as a young girl making it in show biz, but brave as a grown woman facing cancer. Do not believe anyone who says she had no great tunes after Motown; check out "Ain't It the Truth", "Dear Lover", or "The Doctor", and there were others! Her fans love her, and there are legions of them even today. Mary Wells had a certain magic, and that magic defies the passage of time. Motown should be proud they had Mary Wells as long as they did, for she helped build their reputation as "The Sound of Young America". ( and Mr, Gordy knows that.. )
