    let's not forget the most obvious thing...bathrooms have mirrors in them and the easiest way to depict a character soul searching or 'having a good look at himself', is to have them look at themselves in a mirror.

    • @EntertainTheElk
      @EntertainTheElk  6 лет назад +3

      Completely completely agree.

    • @davidlean1060
      @davidlean1060 6 лет назад +2

      Back to Stanley though, briefly. Someone sort of alludes to this later in the thread, but Kubrick saw the shitter being brought inside the domestic home, rather than outside, as a step back for humanity's progress, a direct contradiction of the old saying 'don't shit where you eat'.

    • @davidlean1060

      @Zoe Kouf Perhaps it was, but it doesn't negate what I am saying. Unless you are suggesting a metaphor has only one meaning.

  • @daniel_netzel

    As soon as you realize that 99% of what you see in a film is there by design, everything starts to carry a new meaning. Because you're totally right, normally a filmmaker actively avoids showing something as mundane as a bathroom ritual, but it can serve a strong purpose in developing character traits that would be harder to illustrate anywhere else. But where most filmmakers use the bathroom to demonstrate the mundane before the second act gets moving, Kubrick might be the only one to consistently use the bathroom for something significant itself. Great video dude!

    In most movies I doubt a “hidden meaning” is present as much as suggested. In many Kubrick movies an overriding theme is showing that man is not as great or civil as he believes himself to be - and the bathroom in real or symbolic terms is the place where our civil side no longer divides from the functions of our physical or animal side. In keeping with this Kubrick’s bath scenes were intentionally used as story turning points.

    • @davidlean1060
      @davidlean1060 6 лет назад

      yawn! isn't it clear that when talking about someone like Kubrick, the chances are he does mean something more!! If we watch an episode of Columbo from the 70's, then ok, maybe the guy is just in the jon...but big movies from great film makers...then there is more to it.

    Bathrooms are naturally claustrophobic and filled with inner anxiety and suppressed feelings, but sometimes they go beyond that and become pseudo-wombs places of comfort to hide from the chaos outside. Not many settings have such dicotomy.

    Great video man!!!
    I don't know this for a fact, but I believe that it was James Joyce the first person who dared to write a scene in a bathroom. In his novel Ulysses (1922), right at the begining, Leopold gets into the bathroom with the newspaper. That's pretty much it, but it seems that at the time it was sort of a big deal, it was called obscene and so and so.

      Great video and great comment as well, but in the Odyssey, Odysseus is recognized by Euriclea when she was bathing him (which fits the argument in the video!). Maybe Joyce broke a hiatus in Anglophone literature or something like that...

    I freaking love Kubrick (haven't seen his films many times, but since I've met him I love him), but I've never noticed the importance of bathrooms in his movies, let alone that I would be watching a video with so many bathroom's scenes and be so entertained. • @aliensoup2420
    @aliensoup2420 2 года назад +1

    So if a scene is staged in a bedroom, kitchen, basement, dining room, living room, or office, it does not have any special meaning - it's all purely incidental? Only the bathroom has special meaning?
    So what do you think Kubrick's train of logic was to stage the conversation with Grady in the bathroom - was it : "We're back in the ballroom and I need Jack alone with Grady, but the only private place available is the men's room"; or was it "I want to get Jack and Grady alone in a restroom, I'll stage it in the ballroom and create an accident". The concept of mirrors is relevant in The Shining, since the only time Jack sees ghosts is while he is near a mirror - at the bar, in the men's room, and in Room 237. I think the concept of the mirror was more operative than the bathroom, in this case.

    Scenes in bathrooms are not at all unusual in the movies, as your clips show. In fact, as I was watching this, I had Abbot and Costello Meet the Killer (1949) on TV and somebody was gargling in the bathroom at the same moment you showed somebody brushing his teeth. The silent movie The Crowd has a scene in a bathroom. Late 20s. The movie Head has a toilet scene.

    I love George C. Scott in the bathroom. Though he doesn't actually do it, I always get the sense he's straining and grunting in between yelling out to his secretary. Whereas today, though funny as it is - it's not lasting funny. Like Maximum Overdrive, I laughed at all the added fart sounds as the guy is sitting in the stall talking to Emilio outside. But on subsequent viewings, it was really a pointless location just for a cheap laugh. Now Fun With Dick And Jane, I was shocked how casually Jane Fonda used the toilet. But then Eyes Wide Shut seemed like such a throwaway even for Kubrick to use. Stan should've gone with Kidman helping Cruise cut a toenail, or Cruise popping a zit on Kidman's back or something.

      you need to see more movies ;) just kidding. Have you seen Nightcrawler? There's a famous scene in it where our protagonist, who up to that point in the film, has been weirdly charming, goes a bit berserk, shows us his inner rage and, of course, breaks the mirror he had been looking into. Very standard movie symbolism, but it works every time.

      I'd love to! It's just hard because every essayist and their mother has made a Fincher essay. I wouldn't want to retread on tired ground.

    my fathers pal Robert Hills was charged with arming the cast of Fullmetal Jacket my dad and him spent time on Brixton gasworks a key location on Full Metal Jacket and once went to Mr. Kubrick's house and had a car that he only liked to go three miles and hour.

      i think it fit perfectly with the analysis of the safe place. vincent do a self consultation therapy in the house of his boss to prevent himself from fucking the boss wife, and when it seems to be all fain she is o.d on him (similar structure to alex bath scene). and of course, vincent feel comfortable enough to shit in buch place and then lose his life --- trantino may oppose it but he do try to imitate kubrick every now and then

    If art is accomplished correctly it is crafted with the added value of the audiences' own interpritaion however maticulous or vague that may be. While I enjoy the insight of anothers notions concerning a piece of art I feel a line is crossed when said insight is stated as factual due to this obstructing the concept of open interpretation. Those who view this are apt to draw conclusions based on watching this rather than their own viewing experience. Not speaking particularly for Kubrick films, which have been subject to an exploitation of suggestive interpretations, but art in general
    If you see it then it's there, if you don't its not. That's my issue with this video. It interprets elements of Kubrick films and film in general for you when these are things meant to be drawn out of the audience themselves. This should have been a 'what if' video rather than a 'the truth about' video

    • @EntertainTheElk
      @EntertainTheElk  6 лет назад

      I see where you're coming from. Meaning is found in the eye of the beholder. This was a think piece and an examination at something that maybe people have never noticed. But my essay in itself is also a piece of art and obviously you interpreted it different than others who had no issue with it. So... I think you're just looking for something to take issue with. I never once said that what I think is an absolute fact. It's an idea explored with examples in film.

      What about mandy Ziegler scene where the only place where open your eyes spoken (as opposite to close eyes wide shut) and NY hooker scene where bill and hooker get closer gets camera flare from lens red and blue double rainbow syncs together ruclips.net/video/hhkg285UP7Q/видео.html (Bath tub and on top is SINK = Sync Bill exchanges bodily fluids with hooker as General Riper quote from Dr. Strangelove) where rainbow ends, water - projection screen of light. Nice work about this common feature in Kubrick movies.
