Lesson of the day: Always check the quality of a game for yourself. The internet loves to hate on this game, so I myself thought that it was bad. While I still have never played it, this high level play makes this game look damn good!
Well I mean, it is bad. If you've never played a fighting game in your life & this was first, sure you might think it's a good game. But If we're comparing to successful fighting games or just any other fighting game's mechanics in general, this game is absolutely horrendous to play.

I'd best describe it as being to Fighting Vipers and Virtua Fighter what Marvel vs. Capcom is to Street Fighter. A 3D fighter that's simplified compared to its sister Sega series (Virtua Fighter and Fighting Vipers) and very frantic. The unique system for blocking filters a lot of people, too. As for the game's reputation, I think a lot of it has to do with how often it's conflated with Sonic R and Sonic 3D Blast, as it was released around the same time and, for what it's worth, it's light on story and even get some details wrong (such as having 8 Chaos Emeralds), so Sonic fans just write it off as being garbage due to those details, despite the gameplay itself being fun (once you get used to it).
After 2 Yakuza games where this game was among many featured arcade minigames, its a shock to see this game be played on a pro-level as opposed to mashing; wishing for the best
same! so happy those sonic haters finally left and now we get people that's actually played it and touched it before! if your PC can't handle it you can always play this on Xenia (Xbox 360 emulator) with the XBLA version of the game or instead thru Dolphin or PCSX2 with Sonic Gems Collection.
What blows my mind that This game's scene outlived the confederacy (which is awesome) i wish many platform fighters' competitive scenes out lives the confederacy like 5 to 6 years minimun
I played this so much when I was younger before I got sucked into Smash Bros but I love how unique this is game. This game has been missing a sequel for so long.
From what i remember Metal Sonic, super Sonic, and Eggman(unless both parties agree) are banned but two of those are bosses and the other is a reward so it’s understandable.
Yooooo this is sick, sonic the fighters has a really niche scene but ill get some random pros in my recommendations and i love watching this game. Id love a new sonic fighter

They can't even get a simple HD collection of old ports right and botched a simple remaster of Colors. Is THAT the "bright future" you're speaking of? Sonic the Fighters (aka Sonic Championship) is so much better than Sonic Battle because Sonic Battle plays nothling like an arcade-styled fighting game. And speaking of Sonic Battle, that game needs a remake and the remade version of Sonic Battle needs the Sonic the Fighters/Sonic Championship treatment. In other words, Sonic Battle on the GBA back in the days was all gimmick and less skill and Sonic Battle was a combination of Power Stone and Super Smash Bros. in the of world Sonic the Hedgehog.
I played this game as a kid and thought it was so fuckin cool, saw someone hating on it randomly years ago and wrote it off as another game the internet ruined. Glad to see it played and enjoyed, this shit was fire
They’re referring to the barriers as meter, although it doesn’t function as meter traditionally at all. You can use one barrier to enter the hyper mode, and use barriers to block. When you run out, you’re out of barriers for the match
yoo i remember me and my cousin playing this game and i ended up with a nose bleed because he got excited and hit me in the face with the gamecube controller i was so mad at him 😂😂 i know he did it by mistake tho

It is sometimes a legit strat to drop barrier right before your opponent would use a barrier breaking move to save that barrier in exchange for a slight amount of damage. Also, this is a game where you can spend a barrier to get no end lag on all moves for like 5 seconds or something. Its called resource management. I'm gonna be honest, if this game had infinite barriers, just sitting in barrier and waiting for your opponent to do something would very likely be way too strong and easy, even if it somehow wouldn't be the best gameplan.
