I think what they’re actually asking is, “Have you worked here long enough to know the answer to most questions that I might ask you about the store?“ but, “Do you work here?“ is shorter, and you’ll probably get the answer to the longer question.

Usually “I ask do you work here?” Because one time I didn’t ask that question at a store where the employees wore red polos with the company logo in the corner on the front, I ended up asking another customer if they knew where a certain item was, only for them to turn around, and I realized that their shirt was a red polo, but it didn’t have the company logo

So a lot of people who stock the shelves don't actually work there, big companies like pepsico, coke, etc get to pick where their stuff goes, and as such have to send thier own guys to stock thier product so if you see someone stocking chips or soda there's a high chance they don't work there.

"Do you work here?" Is actually a very considerate question because as someone whose work clothes for a desk job were khakis and a solid-color polo, every time I stopped at a Goodwill, ACE Hardware, etc. before or after work, I'd get middle aged people pouncing on me and firing straight into their latest question or complaint and they would be two sentences into it before I could get a single word in to let them know I DID NOT WORK THERE.
